At a meeting of the City Council, on May 6, Ald. Ed- ward Burke called for a vote on matters nine and 10 on the day’s agenda. Mayor Rahm Emanuel asked, “is there anyone else who would like to address this matter?” As a part of his speech, Ald. Joe Moreno asked his fellow council members to recognize some of the individuals packed into the viewing gallery above. They were given a standing ovation. Alds. Howard Brookins and Joe Moore each followed with their own declarations before Emanuel rose. “This is another step but an essential step in righting a wrong, removing a stain on the reputation of this great city and the people who make up this great city. In this action today Chicago finally will confront its past and come to terms with it and recognize when something wrong was done and be able to be strong enough to say something was wrong,” the mayor said. Many of the people Emanuel thanked for “your persistence, for never giving in or giving up and allowing the city to come face-to-face with the past” were solemnly watching. “The stain cannot be removed from the history of our city but it can be used as a lesson of what not to do and the re- sponsibility that all of us have,” Emanuel added before calling upon Burke. “Mr. President, I move the adoption of the report of the com- mittee on finance pass on items nine and 10 of the same roll call which is applied to item number one on the agenda,” Burke stated. “Carried. No objections. So ordered,” Emanuel replied quickly with a strike of the gavel. It happened so fast that there were those in the gallery who were not sure what had just taken place—that the first battle Straight Up had been officially won in a 42-year war declared in 1973 by a few members of the Chicago Police Department against the Darrell Cannon signing the wall of names Paula Abdul’s on ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ concepts of justice, morality, racial equality, human rights and in 2012 at the opening reception for Opening the Black Box The Charge is Photo by Nick Saglimbeni/Fox 24 dignity. As she listened to Janet Jackson’s “That’s the Way Love Goes,” she felt a void and realized there were no parties that played similar songs of which she was passion- ate about. Wishing there was a more grown-up, sexy and classy space where she could go with other like-minded, queer women, the idea of Slo ‘Mo came to fruition. Over the years she brought on DJs Tess and Audio Jack to help keep the party’s sound going. “The mission with Slo ‘Mo is to bring people together for a really radically positive and in- clusive environment that’s centered around R&B,” said Kaza, also the principal event pro- ducer of No Small Plans Productions. “The party itself has an incredibly positive and welcom- ing tone to it, so it is definitely a party that provides a platform for folks in the LGBT com- munity and particularly for queer women, but everyone is welcome and I think most people always feel very welcome when they are there.” The idea for Paradise came from the energy at another Slo ‘Mo event. This time, the party plays with Pride. Slo ‘Mo welcomes all iden- tities with a love for R&B music, but mainly draws in a queer female crowd. “I think people understand that it’s an en- vironment that is mostly women and mostly women who identity as lesbian, or bisexual, or queer and it’s pretty awesome to have that be- cause we don’t have a lot of spaces out there where we get to be the majority,” Kaza said. “I think especially now we have the very few les- bian bars that even did exist are really shudder- ing all across the country and as we approached this season of Pride, most Pride events are on the Northside and most pride events are really catering to a straight and gay male commu- nity. They’re not really deeply considering what queer women want or how they like to gather and so I think that’s part of what makes a lot of women feel really good about coming into the Slo ‘Mo environment and also why we wanted to do something on the Southside because the Northside is really where people think to go to Available on iTunes, Amazon Instant, Vudu, for Pride and we have so many other amazing spaces, and neighborhoods and communities in this city.” Google Play, and All Cable Providers. Lambert spoke at length about “losing it” at the dress rehearsal for the Grammys in 2014 for the song “Same Love” when she saw the multitude of same-sex couples in attendance ready to take their vows. (Lambert sang and co-wrote the song with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.) The punch line of her story came when a leather-and-lace-attired Madonna appeared out of thin air to comfort her. As the icon gen- tly swept her tears away, Lambert swore that she had been touched by the hand of God. Her reading of “When You Sleep” was so pow- erful that it forced this crowd to listen quietly and absorb it, but the recitation of her poem “Body Love” (which addresses female body im- age, self acceptance, self respect, self-worth and loving oneself completely) was met with a thunderous response. Lambert’s closer, “Se- crets,” took the message of “Body Love” to an entirely new plateau, as the song humorously acknowledged the difficulties that Lambert has dealt with in her young life (her dysfunctional family; being diagnosed as bipolar; and ac- cepting and loving her body and her sexuality despite a conservative-right Christian upbring- ing). “Secrets” was presented here with so much bounce and energy that Lambert left the audience screaming for more. On June 8, Chicago LGBTQ allies Split Feet, fronted by out vocalist/guitarist Jess Skolnik, ripped through a thunderous set of guitar- driven hard rock while serving up generous portions of the band’s soon-to-be-released new cassette at The Empty Bottle. Older songs like “Bernice” and “Gentian” found themselves sandwiched between the new songs, which in- cluded “You’re A Ghost,” “Best Buddy,” “Double Blind” and “Shame Parade.” Split Feet will be playing The Subterranean, 2011 W. North Ave., with queer-friendly rockers Fake Limbs on June 27. Midler touring, in Chicago June 18 Grammy-winning singer and legendary per- former Bette Midler’s first major tour in a de- cade, “Divine Intervention,” has launched. She started her tour with shows in the Flor- ida cities of Hollywood and Tampa, and she’s slated to stop by Chicago’s United Center on Thursday, June 18. Accompanied on stage by a 12-piece band as well as backing vocals by the Harlettes, the show features a stage production courtesy of stage designer Michael Cotton. Midler coun- terbalances the two-hour set of songs with a skewering of social media, in which Midler mocks Facebook and Twitter with commentary and punchlines. Marcos, from San Antonio, told Windy City Times he was looking for “drinks, shopping and fun,” and he was not disappointed. With five stages, savings from local shops, and dozens of stands all over Clark Street, the big crowd could not just get enough from this neighbor- hood. People could find anything: clothes, art, antiques, real estate and information about human rights. They would walk around with pizza, kebabs, beer, wine, mojitos, sangria and even chocolate-covered strawberries in their hands—and it seemed that all attendees had smiles on their faces. On the stages, people enjoyed the performances of bands such as 16 Candles, The Congregation and Little Queens. And among the fun activities there was a hula- hoop show, a climbing wall, a pet parade and face-painting. Even though the festival honored the Swed-
