  • Cluster Analysis of Seasonal Fish Faunal Diversity and Water Physico- Chemical Attributes at Pallathuruthy, Kerala South India
International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2017 72 ISSN 2250-3153 CLUSTER ANALYSIS OF SEASONAL FISH FAUNAL DIVERSITY AND WATER PHYSICO- CHEMICAL ATTRIBUTES AT PALLATHURUTHY, KERALA SOUTH INDIA. Rani S. Dharan*, Dr. Sherly Williams .E ** Environmental sciences, Aquaculture and Fish biotechnology lab, PG and Research Department of Zoology, Fatima mata National College (Autonomous), Kollam. 691001, India Email- [email protected] Abstract- Pallathuruthy is a meeting point between Pamba River and Vembanad Lake of Kerala, South India. So it is an estuarine habitat. The present study analyses the seasonal variation in fish faunal diversity and its relation with existing water quality parameters through cluster analysis. The study showed that there was significant variation in diversity and fish catch strength between three seasons like pre monsoon, monsoon and post monsoon. High species diversity was observed during monsoon season, while good catch strength was obtained during post monsoon. Results of water quality analysis have showed that TDS, Copper, chromium, cadmium and lead content in water were beyond the limit set by IS (2012). Also regarding the sediment quality the cadmium content was above the threshold effect level prescribed by Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life (2001). So, urgent measures were inevitable to sustain the existing fish wealth of this estuarine area. Index Terms– Pallathuruthy, season, cluster analysis, water quality, pollution. I. INTRODUCTION Estuaries provide a unique habitat for a wide variety of biodiversity. It is a suitable breeding and feeding ground for many fish species, due to the convergence of fresh water with brackish water, which can cater the nutritional requirements of fish species.

  • Cruising the Kerala Backwaters 24 February - 7 March 2021
CRUISING THE KERALA BACKWATERS 24 FEBRUARY - 7 MARCH 2021 YOUR TOUR LEADERS FROM £2,580 PER PERSON Tour Leaders: Malcolm and Jane Wallace AN ENCHANTING JOURNEY ALONG EMERALD WATERS Join Malcolm and Jane Wallace on a pioneering cruise through Kerala, from the modern port city Cochin (Kochi) to the ancient port town of Alleppey (Alappuzha) passing through Kottayam, land of rubber and spices. Travel aboard a traditional nine-cabin wooden rice barge on what promises be an enlightening as well as an extremely relaxing holiday. Kerala has an extensive network of water ways that lace its interior coastline, stretching along almost its entire length of around 600kms. It is a land of copious rainfall which flows from the hills and mountain passes in freshwater canals and streams to join the 40 odd rivers in the state. This labyrinthine network of canals, streams and rivers, which converge to form lagoons, make up the Backwaters and give rise to an unique eco system which is a haven for nature. The area has been named by National Geographic as the ‘Green Venice of the East’ due to the green coconut trees which turn the backwaters a vibrant emerald green, with the setting sun adding splashes of red, all contributing to the serenity of this tropical destination. The water-ways teem with life as wooden boats are the only way of travelling between villages. Along the way we will visit temples, churches, marketplaces, paddy fields, beaches and boat building yards. We will learn about and experience the vibrant culture of the region including coir handloom weaving, snake boat regattas, traditional toddy tapping, local dances, martial arts and festivals.

Measures to Mitigate Agrarian Distress in Alappuzha and Kuttanad Wetland Ecosystem A Study Report by M. S. SWAMINATHAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION 2007 M. S. SWAMINATHAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION FOREWORD Every calamity presents opportunities for progress provided we learn appropriate lessons from the calamity and apply effective remedies to prevent its recurrence. The Alappuzha district along with Kuttanad region has been chosen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India for special consideration in view of the prevailing agrarian distress. In spite of its natural wealth, the district has a high proportion of population living in poverty. The M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation was invited by the Union Ministry of Agriculture to go into the economic and ecological problems of the Alappuzha district as well as the Kuttanad Wetland Ecosystem as a whole. The present report is the result of the study undertaken in response to the request of the Union Ministry of Agriculture. The study team was headed by Dr. S. Bala Ravi, Advisor of MSSRF with Drs. Sudha Nair, Anil Kumar and Ms. Deepa Varma as members. The Team was supported by a panel of eminent technical advisors. Recognising that the process of preparation of such reports is as important as the product, the MSSRF team held wide ranging consultations with all concerned with the economy, ecological security and livelihood security of Kuttanad wetlands. Information on the consultations held and visits made are given in the report. The report contains a malady-remedy analysis of the problems and potential solutions. The greatest challenge in dealing with multidimensional problems in our country is our inability to generate the necessary synergy and convergence among the numerous government, non-government, civil society and other agencies involved in the implementation of the programmes such as those outlined in this report.

  • A Survey on the Species Diversity and Water Quality Parameters of Selected Site in Vembanad Lake
14(6):01-05(2020) Journal of fisheriessciences.com E-ISSN 1307-234X @2020 www.fisheriessciences.com Research Article A Survey on the Species Diversity and Water Quality Parameters of Selected Site in Vembanad Lake Yadu Krishnan, June Mary Josy, Namitha Paul, Shiya Biju and Jithu Paul Jacob* School of Industrial Fisheries, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, India Abstract The status of fin fish and shell fish diversity were investigated in the Vembenad Lake in the proposed study area includes Chandhi Resort, Chungam, Pallathuruthy, Vattakayal and Aaru Block. A total of 28 species were identified in which the Shannon Wiener diversity index (H’) values were found to be on higher side and varied from 0.6548 to 2.311. Simpson Dominance index was shown a maximum of 0.8876 (site 1) and minimum of 0.2466 (site 2). There were signs of decline of the Vembanad fishery resources, evident in the lesser number of species and decline of fishery production. It shows that the difference of 72% was shown in between site 5 and site 2 when compared with others. While the similarity index shows that site 5 and site 2 are much comparable to the extent of difference of 8 %. There is 40% difference were noted between site 4 and with site 3 and 1. The difference of 16% was observed between site 3 and site 1 in the present study. Representation of water quality parameters were also analyzed showed an average salinity during the study period was 11.95 ppt and dissolved oxygen was 4 mg/ml.
