It also aims to investigate motive, means, and opportunity, as used by the social actors – the forgers. The examination of the forgeries not only uncovers the historical imagination of their producers but also helps our better understanding of the historical culture of the epoch and its social circulation in a given society. The study of “Prince Fedor’s charter of 1062” examines how urban elites accepted the noblemen’s political and historical culture and used it for their own purposes. The author of the paper examines how the social aspirations and dominant cultural framework in the host society influenced the wealthy Armenian Diaspora to promote some possible options of the usable past and to abandon other ones. Finally, it shows how the elements of all these options were combined into a new narrative in the nineteenth century, in accordance with the historical culture of Romantic nationalism. According to Bo Strath, “History does not exist ‘out there,’ waiting to be discovered, but is permanently invented in order to give meaning to the present – and to the future – through the past.” 2 Thus, the examination of the forgeries not only uncovers the historical imagination of their pro- ducers but also helps to understand better the historical culture of the epoch and its social circulation in the given society. By 1500, senses of the past among elite groups had clearly become a major if not predominant element in various political cultures of Euro- pe. 3 There can be little doubt that the 16th and 17th centuries witnessed an enormous efflorescence in historical interest among European social elites. Professor Bernd Schneidmüller’s note of the changes in urban his- torical consciousness in late medieval Germany could be easily applied to late 16th–17th century Lemberg: “It is important to note that urban historiography was subject to a general process by which urban society increasingly splits into strata. When the patriciate emerged as an autho- rity endowed with a God-given right to rule, urban chroniclers, when describing the origins of their city as a social body, no longer focused exclusively on the emancipation of the city dwellers from their lords … [Now] … city chroniclers […] were far more interested in explaining the royal acts of favor that had fostered the development of their cities. Forgeries and Their Social Circulation in the Context of Historical 97 Culture: The Usable Past as a Resource for Social Advance in Early Modern Lemberg/Lviv In 1641, representatives of Lemberg’s Armenian community submit- ted to the royal chancery a charter, issued in 1062 by the great Prince of Rus Fedor (Theodore), son of Dmitry. According to the charter, the Prince invited Armenian warriors to help him at war and allowed them to settle anywhere in his domains. The Armenian community used the Latin translation of this charter in a lawsuit against the city magistrate of Lemberg in 1654 and was granted some privileges by King Jan Kazimierz. But, as we know, in 1062, there was no Ruthenian prince with such a name. The original charter, written in Old-Slavonic or Ruthenian, was lost in the early 19th century. In the late 19th century, with the development of a positivist critical approach some scholars doubted the authenticity of the charter. 5 The last time the charter caught scholarly attention was in the 1960s. In 1962, young Ukrainian historian Iaroslav Dashkevych made a statement that the charter is an evident forgery because of the lack of many features obligatory for late medieval charters. 6 His statement was attacked by the Armenian historian Vardges Mikaelian, who insisted on the authenticity of the charter. 7 This discussion had no further develop- ment. Moreover, they did not even try to pose questions about a general percep- tion of the past in the early modern period, the historical imagination of the townspeople in Lviv, and – what is more important – the uses of the distant past by the Armenian community before 1641. When it is discovered that a forgery is indeed a forgery, the tempta- tion may be simply to call it that and stop, instead of attempting to study the relationship of the particular forgery to historical culture. As an umbrella term to capture what is being described in the present paper, I have chosen the term “historical culture.” According to Daniel Woolf, A historical culture consists of habits of thought, languages, media of communica- tion, patterns of social convention that embrace elite and popular, narrative and non-narrative modes of discourse. It is expressed both in texts and in commonplace forms of behaviour – for instance, the resolution of conflicts through reference to a widely accepted historical standard such as ‘antiquity.’ 9 This paper can contribute to the study of the following two aspects of early modern historical culture: the social construction of the distant past as evidence to resolve legal disputes and its uses by urban elites for their social advance. The investigation of this microscale case could also contribute to a better understanding of developments in the township’s historical imagination in early modern Europe. The difficulty is that these sorts of questions are not the only ones that can or should be asked in connection with Polish historical thought during the early modern period. What we now need to know is what turned the townspeople in Lemberg – and Armenian merchants resi- ding there in particular – who were not remarkably interested in their national and local urban history in the 1560s, and only marginally more so in the 1600s, a generation later, into people thoroughly preoccupied with history in the 1630s–1670s (so absorbed by it that they not only used 9 Daniel Woolf, The Social Circulation of the Past: English Historical Culture, 1500–1730 (Ox- ford: Oxford University Press, 2003), 9–10.

In the second half of the sixteenth century, after the union of Lublin (1569), the Polish-Lithuanian state covered an area of 815,000 square kilometres. Abstract: At the beginning of the Renaissance Lithuanians understood that to join the civilization of Western Europe, it was necessary to have an appropriate (it means: very long) tradition. Like other countries, they had to create their own myth of origin. The most prestigious tradition was Greek-Roman antiquity, so the country’s origin story was invented, claiming its people descended directly from Rome. According to subsequent chronicles, the founder of the new state was Palemon (Publius Libon, initially Vilia). Using the theory of cultural memory of Jan and Aleida Assmann, the article presents how and why the Lithuanian myth of origin was transformed from 15th to the end of the 18th century. Particular attention was paid to the current needs of the state and the powerful noble families of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which also found their origins in the state myth. During the early modern period, the changes in the story were made (including the date of Palemon’s arrival in the Lithuanian lands). Nonetheless, the myth was not questioned for a long time. Even once it had already been established that it was no more than a fairy tale, the story was revived again, performing other functions in the 19th century. Most significant is not that Poland was a part of the general European Enlightenment, but that Polish enlight- ened thought resided primarily within “fashionable” elite circles and was ultimately based on the writings of the French philosophes. The wholesale acceptance of French culture brought a clear and conscious change to the szlachta’s traditionally Sarmatian character, while at the same time the szlachta family was unconsciously transformed by the more subtle Western notions of kinship and affective individual- ism, a process that culminated with the reign of the last enlightened despot—Napoleon Bonaparte.2 The mentalité of the Polish nobility was recast in the eighteenth century as its membership embraced selectively certain aspects of both the Enlightenment and ancien régime France. Mirosław Korolko’s analysis of political arguments used in the controversy over the Confederation2 – on a par with denominational, historiosophical, legal and socio‑economic argu‑ mentation – does not explain the relation between propaganda activity and actual attitudes of Protestants as citizens. Jahrhundert (Sarmatism: The Political Ideology of the Polish Nobility in the 16th and 17th Centuries)1 is devoted to an analysis of the circumstances and development of the ideology behind the multifaceted phenomenon known as Sarmatism. Historiography associates Sarmatism with the Central East European region, distin- guishing primarily the nobility of the Kingdom of Poland, the culture it nurtured, the way of life, the world-view, the national consciousness and the ideology. A number of studies have been conducted in Polish historiography on this topic. That might be why the author raises the question in the preface of the book as to whether a researcher who is not a Pole takes a risk in choosing to analyse Sarmatism. He also notes that a trend has emerged whereby German historians are turning their attention to Poland’s history, and German-Polish relations are becoming the focus of the research. Another reaction, in his view, could arise if a foreigner dares to analyse a phenomenon that is traditionally considered to be specifically Polish, and grew into the Polish consciousness far back in history. On the other hand, Faber admits that he was surprised that the research project on the Sarmatism of the Polish nobility met with greater disapproval in Germany than in Poland.

Ця композиція з’являється в другому віденському виданні за 1560 р. «Визнання віри» авторства польського єпископа, а згодом кардинала Станіслава Гоз’юша (Stanislaus Hosius, Stanisław Hozjusz). Ця ж композиція наявна у віденському виданні 1561 року, однак відсутня у всіх подальших репринтах. У той же час, Національний музей у Кракові визначає походження цього деревориту з міста Майнц і датує 1557 роком, однак у наявних екземплярах видання 1557 року в Бібліотеці Чарторийських та Баварській бібліотеці в Мюнхені цей дереворит відсутній. У своїй статті я висвітлюю мистецькі особливості композиції даної емблеми – портрет короля, значення обрамлення його постаті династичними та територіальними гербами та аналізую і перекладаю текст 12- рядкового вірша латинською мовою. Вірш пояснював успіхи Сигізмунда ІІ, по-перше, походженням його імені від давньоримського принцепса Октавіана Августа, а по-друге, вірністю короля Католицькій церкві. Враховуючи призначення Гоз’юша папським нунцієм до Відня у 1559 році, цілком імовірним вбачається безпосереднє залучення єпископа до творення образу польського короля, особливо враховуючи діяльність Гоз’юша на Контрреформаційній ниві в Європі. Здійснювалось це з подвійною метою: аби виконати своєрідну повчально-католицьку місію для Максиміліана ІІ Габсбурга, а також для промоції образу Сигізмунда Августа на міжнародній арені. У статті акцентується увага на античних ремінісценціях, до яких звертався автор, а також визначені можливі подальші напрямки досліджень рецепції античності (the classical reception) в контексті ранньомодерної Європи.

Kowaleskib Streszczenie. Celem artykułu jest poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na pytanie badawcze, czy biskup ordynariusz diecezji warmińskiej Marcin Kromer był jednym z prekursorów państwoznawstwa w Polsce. Autorzy prześledzili kolejne etapy drogi życiowej Kromera, jego karierę zawodową oraz dorobek w zakresie pisarstwa kościelnego i świeckiego. Na tej podstawie stwierdzili, że w jednym dziele Kromera – Polonia sive de situ, populis, moribus, magistratibus et Republica regni Polonici libri duo – znajdują się opisy mające znamiona państwoznawstwa. Samo zaś dzieło ma do dziś niezaprzeczalną wartość poznawczą. The aim of the article is to seek an answer to the research question whether the bishop ordinary of the diocese of Warmia, Marcin Kromer, can be regarded as one of the precursors of state studies in Poland. The authors chronogically examined particular stages of the bishop’s life, his professional career and achievements in the field of church and secular writing. The research demonstrates that one of Kromer’s works entitled Polonia sive de situ, populis, moribus, magistratibus et Republica regni Polonici libri duo includes descriptions which can be classified as examples of state studies. Until this day, the work itself has an undeniable cognitive value to its readers.     Acta Poloniae Historia 67, 1993 PL ISSN 0001-6829 Andrzej Wyrobisz TOWNS IN 15TH, 16TH, AND 17TH CENTURY DESCRIPTIONS OF POLAND I will compare here three geographical descriptions of Poland and the way in which they presented towns. These will be Jan Długosz's Chorographia, Marcin Kromer's Polonia and Szymon Starowolski's Polonia, three geographical works written not be geographers but by historians representing three epochs in the history of Polish and European culture: the late Middle Ages, the mature Renaissance and the Baroque, that is, three different perceptions of the world, the natural environment, man and history. The work on Chorography must have taken Długosz much time, but we do not know exactly when he wrote it. It may have been intended as a separate work. He must have given it the final shape in the years 1475-1480 and included it as an introduction to his monumental History of Poland. Like the whole of Długosz's work, Chorography had, for over two hundred years, been accessible only in manuscripts, for the endeavours to publish it at the beginning of the 17th century ended in failure. However, this did not prevent it from becoming known, at least to learned men, for Długosz's work was circulated in the many hand-written copies which began to be made soon after the author's death (1480). According to Aleksander Przezdziecki, there were at least 34 manuscripts of Długosz's work, excluding summaries, in Poland at the end of the 16th century. The fundaments of this theory, however, are tricky: the Iranian tie of all the populations on the north-eastern edge of the ancient world is too weak to support the ex- istence of one ancient ethnos; our current image of the Sarmatians is the result of loose readings of texts and archaeological evidence, nourished by nationalistic convictions.
