Not only are the results the most hotly-anticipated in Asia by wine and spirit lovers and the trade, but for Asia’s top wine professionals our judging week marks one of the most highly anticipated weeks of the year. In fact, judges from across Asia affectionately refer to the HKIWSC judging team as “The Family”, which goes to show the respect and regard they feel for the competition, the products, the results, and all those involved. In 2016 we welcomed our largest ever judging team, a record 40 judges in total, who came, tasted, judged, debated and delivered the verdict on a wonderfully diverse range of wines and spirits from across the globe. Patrick Materman, Chief Winemaker at New Zealand’s Brancott Estate, our VIP International Wine Judge, injected energy, ideas and excitement into the mix with both New World perspective… and humour! Meanwhile, the judging team, the media and a host of hospitality students were thoroughly in awe of our VIP International Spirits Judge, David Stewart MBE, Malt Master at William Grant & Sons’ The Balvenie. He patiently spent many hours sharing his long and illustrious career, along with his sage wisdom and advice with individuals and groups over several days. With eight years of history behind us now, the respect our judging team (both past and present!) feel towards the competition speaks volumes to me about the industry regard for the Cathay Pacific HKIWSC. Of course, it is wonderful to have our entry numbers rising, but to enjoy such respect among the most important wine writers, educators, The longer the competition goes on so the sense of sommeliers and other industry professionals is as great a trophy as any. togetherness and weight of combined experience adds DEBRA MEIBURG MW greater credibility to the results DIRECTOR, CATHAY PACIFIC HKIWSC 4 HKIWSC Report 2016 05_HKIWSC_16_Lucaris_Layout 1 25/10/2016 11:20 Page 1 06 asias choice MC _Layout 1 26/10/2016 10:01 Page 6 asia’s choice –asia’s voice WHAT MAKES THE COMPETITION SPECIAL? Since its founding eight years ago by long-term Hong Kong resident Debra Meiburg MW, Christie’s Simon Tam and the IWSC Group, the Cathay Pacific Hong TASTE Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition has striven to make itself “Asia’s Choice, Asia’s Voice”. As such, the arena of food pairing is particularly important. Food dominates of asia the Asian continent and in a diverse and bewildering array of styles and flavours, which sometimes makes wine matching a tricky business. The aim of the HKIWSC is to provide some pointers, and the results are sometimes surprising and always interesting. Highlights of the results include the significant increase in entries in the food and wine pairing categories, up over 50% versus 2015, along with the diversity of the countries on the winners’ list in 2016. Debra Meiburg MW said of the awards; ‘The Asian food and wine pairing categories were the star of the show this year. The combination of a great set of new dishes plus the increasing focus on Asian food and wine pairing, both in Asia and internationally, were key contributors to this remarkable increase.” Judges’ views Sarah Wong: “Crystal King Prawn has delicate flavours. The challenge in looking for a wine was looking for a style that would highlight the freshness of the ingredient, and complement the saltiness of the parma ham. Gruner Veltliner, though not an obvious choice, worked surprisingly well.” Chris So: “The Beef Teppanyaki category was fun to judge, and many One of the HKIWSC’s most interesting features is wines paired well with the dish. This was an increase from the 7.5% share in 2011. Market share of bottles priced ¥500 JPY ($6.33) or under and ¥1000 – 1500 JPY ($12.66 – 18.99 USD) continue to increase. Bulk wine imports continue to grow as domestic Japanese wine companies bottle their own wine. Executive Summary: Executive Summary Distribution of Japanese bottled wine is approximately 900 thousand hectoliters. This plus 1.81 million hectoliters of imported bottled wines totaled 2.71 million hectoliters of wine distributed in Japan. The Japanese wine market continues to be very competitive. Although 50 countries supply wine to Japan, ten countries account for approximately 96% of the imported volume. On-premise consumption continues to increase as the Japanese economy improves and wine becomes more generally affordable. Upscale Japanese izakaya restaurants are performing quite well, and standing wine bars are becoming more popular, particularly among middle-aged and older men. Off-premise o Off-premise consumption has increased as well. Supermarkets are carrying more inexpensive (under ¥1000 JPY or $12.66) wines, and premium wines are increasingly being consumed from online sources.

  • The Atlas Collections
THE ATLAS COLLECTIONS Dear Guests, Welcome to ATLAS - a labour of love that honours my grandfather, CS Hwang, the late founder of Parkview Group, and the beautiful space he created in which ATLAS resides. It is our hope that your experience at ATLAS reflects the passion and attention that has gone into every aspect of its creation. A grand and beautiful space, we invite you to unwind, enjoy, celebrate and indulge as our talented and dedicated ATLAS team makes you feel most welcome and at home. The ATLAS Collections feature two of the world’s most remarkable physical collections of Gin and Champagne. Building the ATLAS Collections was a monumental task which took over two years to curate and assemble. We are also delighted to feature a selection of rare and exceptional still wines and whiskies from my own family’s private cellar, which for the first time since its inception almost 40 years ago, has been opened especially for our guests at ATLAS. Building upon the modest collection of wines started by my grandfather, the Parkview Family Cellar found a permanent home in 1989 with the opening of the Parkview Group’s flagship property, Hong Kong Parkview. Initially consisting of a small collection of 50 bottles of right bank Bordeaux wines, the collection grew steadily under the stewardship of my uncle, George Wong, and his son Alex. By 2000, the collection was at 3,000 bottles and has now expanded beyond the right bank to other regions in France and the rest of the world. Currently, the collection stands at 50,000 bottles of fine wine and over 10,000 bottles of whiskey acquired through reputable merchants, auctions, and numerous trips to the wineries and distilleries where suppliers have now become close friends, ensuring that the family always has access to the finest and rarest bottles.

Imports were valued at $1.65 billion in 2018, and account for nearly seventy percent of the market. The United States is the fourth largest supplier on a value basis at $129 million, yet holds only eight percent of total import market; overshadowed by $925 million in exports from France. Chile is the largest supplier on a volume basis, at 77.9 million liters. U.S. bottled wine imports were valued at $116 million, with a unit value of $16.14/L. The United States is also the second largest supplier of bulk wine at $10.9 million.
