So it’s with more than a tinge of sadness that we say goodbye to the McDonald family, as they hand over the lease of The Manly Hotel to its new custodians, Endeavour Group. A chapter in Manly’s history is about to close as Sandy, Jenny, and Doug McDonald hand over the lease to The Manly Hotel’s new licensees after 51 years. This is more than just a bricks and mortar pub; it’s an iconic institution where milestone memories have been made, careers forged and friendships endured. “Working at The Manly, where everybody knows Sandy, Jenny and Doug, is like being a part of an even bigger family than the McDonald clan,” said Janet Moore, niece to Jenny, Sandy and Doug McDonald. “A strong, community-minded spirit is in everything we do and it has been a privilege to get to know the locals who feel so at home at The Manly.” Janet recalls many happy memories of the extended family celebrations that have taken place at the pub over the last 51 years. “The first big one would have been Doug’s 21st back in 1970, and 49 years later it was time to celebrate Doug’s 70th. How time flies!” Endeavour will take the reins on October 1, which marks the start of the group’s new 50-year lease. -

Relationships to the Bush in Nan Chauncy’s Early Novels for Children SUSAN SHERIDAN AND EMMA MAGUIRE Flinders University The 1950s marked an unprecedented development in Australian children’s literature, with the emergence of many new writers—mainly women, like Nan Chauncy, Joan Phipson, Patricia Wrightson, Eleanor Spence and Mavis Thorpe Clark, as well as Colin Thiele and Ivan Southall. Bush and rural settings were strong favourites in their novels, which often took the form of a generic mix of adventure story and the bildungsroman novel of individual development. The bush provided child characters with unique challenges, which would foster independence and strength of character. While some of these writers drew on the earlier pastoral tradition of the Billabong books,1 others characterised human relationships to the land in terms of nature conservation. In the early novels of Chauncy and Wrightson, the children’s relationship to the bush is one of attachment and respect for the environment and its plants and creatures. Indeed these novelists, in depicting human relationships to the land, employ something approaching the strong Indigenous sense of ‘country’: of belonging to, and responsibility for, a particular environment. Later, both Wrightson and Chauncy turned their attention to Aboriginal presence, and the meanings which Aboriginal culture—and the bloody history of colonial race relations— gives to the land. In their earliest novels, what is strikingly original is the way both writers use bush settings to raise questions about conservation of the natural environment, questions which were about to become highly political. In Australia, the nature conservation movement had begun in the late nineteenth century, and resulted in the establishment of the first national parks. -

“I Rep for My Mob” Blackfellas Rappin’ from Down-Unda1 Chiara Minestrelli In an era of decentering globalizing forces that continuously shift the locale of cultural production and consumption from global markets to local realities and vice versa, music has come to play a crucial role in redefining the value of regional discourses. Hip hop music,2 with its long and solid history of indigenization in different parts of the globe, has provided marginalized and stigmatized communities around the world with accessible “artistic tools” of self-expression. Tony Mitchell (2001), Samy H. Alim, Awad and Pennycook (2009), Sujatha Fernandes (2011) and more recently Christopher Malone and George Martinez (2014), amongst others, have explored the multifaceted and compelling expressivity of “glocal” discourses articulated through hip hop. Many are the local stories of struggle and empowerment that have gained global recognition thanks to the new media. Recent emblematic cases of this movement from the local to the global are well represented by three distinct and yet interrelated cases that testify the power of hip hop as an amplifier for unique stories. The first example is that Sonita Alizadeh, a young Afghani girl who used her personal experience to convey a message of dissent against the issue of child marriage with a hip hop track called “Brides for Sale” (2014). In a similar fashion, with the track “Kodaikanal Won’t” (2015) a young Indian Tamil woman, Sofia Ashraf, launched her protest against the pollution of Kodaikanal (India) caused by the multinational company Unilever. Fitting into a similar “template,” Kylie Sambo, a young Indigenous activist from Australia’s Northern Territory, released the track “Muckaty” (2010),3 where she lamented the Australian govern-ment’s decision to create a nuclear waste dump on Indigenous land. -

The announcement came in the wake of a fi ery meeting of company staff , owners and management days earlier. Ryan Hamilton, who managed the company’s Byron Bay warehouse for the past 10 years, has been named as interim general manager. Th e Santos board of directors issued a brief statement this week saying Mr Hamilton ‘knows Santos intimately,’ and would replace Mr Boussard im- mediately. Th e board said ‘everybody at Santos is doing their best’ and it was ‘grateful to all staff for their openness and dedication’. During the meeting, Mr Boussard, who was appointed to run the 30-year- old business a year ago, had off ered to stay away from Santos’s three outlets and work from home in an eff ort to ease tensions until a further extraordi- nary meeting was held.
