Injazz, areamodifiedformofthechordprogressionofGeorgeGershwin's song"IGotRhythm",whichformthebasisofcountless(usuallyuptempo)jazzcompositions. Rhythmchangeswerepopularwithswingeramusicians–theyareusedin"ShoeShineBoy" (LesterYoung's1929breakoutrecordingwithCountBasie)and"Cottontail"(Ellington, 1940),forinstance.Buttheirenduringpopularityislargelyduetotheirextensiveusebyearly musicians."IGotRhythm"wasalreadyapopularjazzstandard,andbywritinganew songoveritschordchanges(atypeofcompositionknownasa),thetunecouldbe copyrightedtotheartistinsteadofrequiringthatroyaltiesbepaidtotheGershwinestate.
