Jerome Kish A World at Prayer is a World at Peace Did you ever hear of Fr. Patrick Peyton? He was known as ‘The Rosary Priest.’ As a young boy in Ireland, his Catholic family would gather each night for a family rosary. It was no mechanical practice. Patrick’s father John was filled with a spirit of faith that moved him to his knees to lead his family in true prayer. This family life of faith planted the seeds of a vocation in the heart of young Patrick. He came to our United States at the age of 18, ready to try his hand at selling real estate in Scranton, Pennsylvania. But Christ moved his heart to deal in heavenly real estate—the kingdom of heaven. He now dreamed of being a missionary priest. So he entered the Congregation of the Holy Cross, traveling to South Bend to the University of Our Lady—or Notre Dame. At Notre Dame, it seemed his dreams wouldn’t last. He might not last, either; Patrick came down with tuberculosis. It was his Aunt Annie who shared his mother’s heart with him when she said, “It was your mother’s constant prayer that your sufferings would come upon her, that you would get well and go back to your work.” It moved Patrick to ask our Blessed Mother for a cure. If his own mother loved him so much, how much more does the Mother of God. He spent his priestly life as a true missionary, proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. And the way he taught the joy of the Gospel was through its summary in the mysteries of the Rosary. He had a knack for getting Hollywood stars like Bing Crosby and Loretta Young to help him pray and preach. They helped produce high-quality, dramatic productions of the life of Jesus. Those movies helped people to see and understand the scenes of Jesus life, death and resurrection—people were contemplating the mysteries of our faith. Huge rallies were held, rallies of prayer, prayers for peace. The practice of prayer that Patrick learned as a boy were now being brought by Father Patrick to the family of the world. In 1961, half a million people gathered together in San Francisco. Two million people prayer the Rosary together in Brazil and also in the Philippines. Two million people! And he repeated this constant motto: A World at Prayer is a World at Peace. These rallies weren’t some one-time event. They were prepared for by forty Holy Hours, praying for the spiritual success of the day. Forty Masses were offered. The local priests preached about the importance of family prayer. Pledge cards were distributed to invite people to take on the habit of prayer and attend the rally. Even those in hospitals and prisons were asked to join in and offering their sufferings for the success of these rallies. Fr. Peyton spent his life promoting these rallies from the 1950s to the 1980s. What was the point? Was it a success? I would point out that the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War encompass this period. Yes, politicians and historians will credit their own success. I am more inclined to listen to the voice of the saints. Pope John Paul II attributed the fall of the Soviet Union not to his involvement in world affairs, but instead to the intercession of Our Lady. It’s much easier for people to unite against a common enemy and defeat them when that enemy is external. What do you do when destructive forces make you sick on the inside, within your own nation? Thankfully, the medicine is the same: prayer. It’s true, a world at prayer is a world a peace. The saints remind us that prayer and sin cannot live together—you will give up one or the other. October 7 is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Our parishes have been joining together for a family Rosary each night at 6pm since the pandemic began. I hope you will join us, even at your own time according to your own schedule. Invite others to join you. People seem very concerned about the state of our nation and of our world. You could spark a conversation with them. “Are you truly concerned? Then could you pray a Rosary with me for peace? Let’s ask our Blessed Mother to help us.” Fr. Patrick Peyton really wasn’t afraid what they would answer. He knew that the question itself would plant the seeds of faith. And he loved the world too much and Our Lady even more to let it stop him from helping bring peace into the world. Fr. Patrick Peyton, pray for us that we may be the instruments of God’s peace in our day. With my prayers, Fr.
