We have permission gradually to introduce some of the people’s parts of the Mass in the weeks leading up to Advent. Our choirs are working on the chants now, and we hope to introduce them to the congregation by Fr. Paul Schmidt the first Sunday of November. We have received a supplement to our hymnal, which contains those parts whose translation will be different. We have also ordered cards that will be placed in the pews, for use when texts are recited. These should remain in the pews for all parishioners to use. We will be concentrating on becoming familiar with these new texts during the coming year. We hope that by the end of a year, everyone will be so accustomed to the new version, that we will have forgotten the old one. By using the simple Gregorian chants in the Missal, some of whose melodies are familiar already, we can concentrate on learning the texts. The daily Mass congregation has already begun to sing the new version of a couple of the texts. Getting used to a new translation will be a bit awkward at first. We may slip and forget “May the to respond: “And with your spirit,” or “Lord, God of hosts” for a while. We shall have to be patient and not get overly disturbed if things are not perfect right away. The priest’s part has New Missal changed much more than the congregation’s. We priests will be more “tied to the book” for a while. We hope you will be patient as we become more adept at proclaiming the new words. deepen our Bishop Cordeleone has asked that the sermons of coming weeks concentrate on the Mass. We are to explain the different dimensions and the different parts of the celebration of awareness of the Eucharist. Our homilies may be a bit more catechetical than homiletic. The purpose will be to enrich your understanding of what we are doing at Mass and why we are doing it. We the Holy hope this will be helpful. When I was ordained, the Mass was celebrated entirely in Latin. On Sundays the Eucharist and priest would read the Bible passages in English after reading them in Latin, then make the announcements and give a sermon. Soon after my ordination, parts of the Mass were unite us more translated into English. Eventually all of the Mass was in English. At that time, Bishop Begin asked that we give sermons explaining what was happening. Where this was done, things went relatively smoothly. However, we made a mistake at that time in thinking that, if completely to we said something once, everyone would immediately absorb and understand it. We forgot the old adage: Repetitio mater studiorum (Repetition is the mother of learning). Jesus.” Much of the confusion of the past happened because people really did not understand what was going on and why. We hope to avoid this mistake again. Let us pray that the result of our new translation will be more than a new set of words. May our new English Missal enable us to deepen our awareness of the great treasure we have in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. May it increase our devotion and our participation. May it unite us more completely to Jesus, our Great High Priest. Your Pastor, Father Paul Schmidt P.S. Thank you to all who helped to make last week’s Oktoberfest a rousing success. It was so good to see so many, young and old and in between enjoying the games, food, entertainment, and one another’s company. Celebrating our diverse community is the major purpose of this event. Thanks also to God for sending wonderful weather!
