(Familie Teleosauridae) bestimmt. Es ist der ~ilteste aus Madagaskar bekannte Kro- kodilier und deutet aunistische B eziehungen mit Westeuropa und Siidamerika an. Die Verbreitung der ober- liassischen marinen Krokodilier, die derjenigen des Ammoniten Bouleiceras iihnelt, weist auf die Existenz einer epikontinentalen Seestraf~e vonder Tethys fiber die transerythr~iische Provinz bis zum siidlichen Tell Afrikas; diese Seestral~e bildete eine Verbindung zwischen Westeuropa und Siidamerika. A b s t r a c t : A fragment of the upper jaw of a crocodilian from the Toarcian of NW Madagascar is refer- red to Steneosaurus sp. (family Teleosauridae). It is the earliest known crocodilian from Madagascar. It indi- cates faunal relationships with western Europe and South America. The distribution of late Liassic marine crocodilians, similar to that of the ammonite Bouleiceras, suggests the existence of an epicontinental seaway from the Tethyan region to the southern part of Africa via the Transerythrean Province, which provided a marine connection between western Europe and South America. Abstract: Substantial numbers of the nautilid Cenoceras occur in a stratigraphically limited horizon within the upper part of the Lower Jurassic (Sinemurian Stage) Blue Lias Formation at Watchet on the West Somerset Coast (United Kingdom). Individual nautilid conchs are associated with clusters of encrusting organisms (sclerobionts) forming ‘islands’ that may have been raised slightly above the surrounding substrate. Despite the relatively large numbers of nautilid conchs involved, detailed investigation of their preservation suggests that their accumulation reflects a reduction in sedimentation rates rather than an influx of empty conches or moribund animals. Throughout those horizons in which nautilids are present in relative abundance, the remains of ammonites are subordinate or rare. The reason for this unclear, and preferential dissolution of ammonite conchs during their burial does seem to provide a satisfactory solution to the problem. -

[email protected] Shallow-water Carnian brachiopod fauna of the NCA is relatively poor in its diversity (e.g. Adygella and some species of Cruratula and koninckinids in the Raibl and Cardita Beds). It is markedly different not only from partially synchronous assemblages of the Hallstatt Limestone, which lived in deeper parts of the Tethys but totally from those of the Norian and Rhaetian. At that time the diversification of the brachiopod assemblages was already more intensive. The Hallstatt facies yielded already more varied, often smooth fauna of the Carnian and Norian age. The differences in composition between them are rather insignificant. Some brachiopod taxa (Camerothyris, some species of the characteristic genus Austriellula – A. nux, A. longicollis, A. dilatata etc.) are known from both Carnian and Norian levels, some other (terebratulids Nucleatula and Juvavella, athyridid Pexidella strohmayeri, and rhynchonellids Austriellula juvavica, A. laevis, Norella geyeri etc.) are reported from the Norian only. Curious local neptunian dyke “Weisser Crinoidenkalk“ on the GSSP candidate Steinbergkogel near Hallstatt is according to KRYSTYN et al. (2007a) the youngest fossil horizon of the Hallstatt Limestone (top of Paracochloceras suessi Zone). It yielded according to BITTNER (1890) „Juvavella Suessii, Rhynchonella Geyeri, Rhynchonella nux, Koninckina blandula and Spirigera deslongchampsi“, all of them held for the Norian species.
