The large number of abstracts submitted for this year’s 8th EFORT Congress in Florence and the estimated number of 8,000 to 10,000 participants clearly demonstrate that our meeting offers a unique and much appreciated opportunity for European orthopaedic and trauma surgeons to interact with peers. Embedded into a grand Opening Ceremony & Reception on Friday, May 11 and a Closing & Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 15, we will be able to present the orthopaedic community a highly stimulating scientific program. The various symposia and cross-fire sessions will cover all aspects of contemporary orthopaedics and traumatology, and also offer an outlook on the future. Apart from the outstanding scientific program of the EFORT Congress, Florence is an attraction all on its own. This venerable city boasts an estimated 30 % of the world’s most important artwork, churches and cultural treasures. Thus, we are convinced that the 8th EFORT Congress will not only satisfy your appetite for intellectual stimulation but also for cultural education. On behalf of EFORT, and also personally, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Franco Postacchini, and the colleagues of the Local Organizing Committee, the Scientific Committee for the superb job they did, the Congress Organizer OIC (and its entire staff) as well as the staff at EFORT headquarters in Zurich for their hard work and devotion. What a pleasure to see you here in Florence! Wolfhart Puhl President of EFORT 8TH EFORT CONGRESS FLORENCE 1.1 01_welcome_adresses:01_welcome_adresses 12.4.2007 10:20 Uhr Seite 2 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE LOCAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE Franco Postacchini Chairman of the Local Organising Committee Dear colleagues, It is with great pride that the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SIOT) hosts the 8th EFORT Congress at the “Fortezza da Basso” in Florence, Italy. The Executive, Scientific and Local Organising Committees as well as the staff at EFORT Central Office have made every effort to set up a scientific programme meant to be comprehensive and attractive to young and senior orthopaedic surgeons alike. I gladly take the opportunity to thank all the people who have contributed with their dedication and hard work to make a success of this event. The social programme aims to be as appealing as possible for both delegates and accompanying persons. Large spaces are available for exhibition of new or already well-known biomedical products, and numerous industry workshops have been organized. It goes without saying that for the quality level and liveliness of the Congress we rely on the highly motivated speakers and moderators of the Symposia, Cross-Fire sessions, Instructional Course Lectures and Free Paper sessions, and the presenters of the innumerable Posters. However, the success of the Congress will essentially depend on the active participation in the scientific work of the many thousands of orthopaedic surgeons who have decided to attend. The scientific stimulation and exchange, the cultural setting and the various oppor- tunities to socialize with peers will certainly make this Congress an unforgettable experience from the scientific, cultural and social point of view. Finally, allow me to add what may sound an obvious thing to say, but do not miss the opportunity to visit Florence with its invaluable artistic heritage, and enjoy the Italian cuisine! Come to Florence, and you will have the greatest of times! We interpret this highest-ever number of abstracts received as an indication that you value and use the forum of the EFORT Congress to share your expertise with peers. This is in the very spirit of our organization - we thank you for your active participation! The 8th EFORT Congress in Florence clearly places a focus on minimally-invasive procedures including arthroscopy. 25 symposia of a total of 100 Symposia, Cross-Fire discussions and Instructional Course Lectures, as well as 250 of a total of 900 free papers, have been dedicated to this highly topical issue. Also, we have extended our scientific symposia to include two new categories, Sports and Hand/Wrist Surgery. Furthermore, within the framework of an Innovation Park, our industry partners will provide insight into their state-of-the-art products and technologies. I would like to seize this opportunity to thank all scientific advisors and the members of the Scientific Committee for their tireless work to put together the comprehensive Scientific Programme that we will proudly present in Florence.
