Each and global ambassador of Jaguar and an asset to the brand legacy he every model developed with Dewis’ Facebook page: helped to establish www.facebook.com/jdcli/ (Continued on page 2) help remains an icon of the automotive world to this day for its impeccable blend of comfort and handling.

Unusually, Norman reported directly to Jaguar Chief Engineer, William Heynes; this arrangement was probably unique in the motor industry for a test engineer and it enabled the company’s chief engineer (later engineering director) instant, first-hand feedback on the proving process. Norman also sent copies of his reports to company founder Sir . Both placed considerable store by what Norman said.

Born in Coventry, Dewis began working on cars at age 14, fitting wings and bonnets at the Humber factory. At just 15 he moved to another car manufacturer, Armstrong Siddeley, where he spent time in the chassis department and first learned to drive while taking cars on their shakedown runs. During wartime, Dewis was drafted into the RAF, working the gun turret of a Blenheim bomber, and finally joined Jaguar after a post-war stint at Lea-Francis.

Besides the many cars Dewis helped develop in his career, one of his first automotive projects is without doubt the one with the greatest effect on the automotive industry; the disc brake. Dewis became involved with Jaguar and Dunlop’s development of the revolutionary braking system, famously trialed in a C-type at the 1952 Mille Miglia with Sir in the driving seat and Dewis navigating. Dewis also, in 1953, set a 172.412 mph production car speed record in a modified Jaguar XK120 on a closed section of the Jabbeke highway, Belgium. He also drove a 190mph works D-type in the dramatic 1955 Le Mans 24hr race with greats like Moss, Hawthorn and Fangio.

Famed racing driver, Mike Hawthorn, had such faith in Dewis that when he was asked to attend a test session and saw that Dewis was already there, asked the team manager: “Why am I here? If Norman’s satisfied with it, I’m satisfied.” And so it was, through a mutual respect and an instant likeability, that Dewis struck up life-long friendships with the likes of Hawthorn, Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart.

Outside of racing car development, Dewis is also famous for his legendary night-time dash from Coventry to the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 for the launch of the Jaguar E-type. Covering roughly 700 miles in another E-type sourced from the factory for the for press demonstration runs, Dewis arrived roughly 15 hours later having not stopped once (aside from fuel) – hugely impressive at a time when there were no motorways.

In an era without seatbelts or crash safety, Dewis was fearless. In total, it’s estimated he completed more than a million test miles at an average speed of 100mph-plus, with a number of heroic anecdotes as a result. Whether it was the D-type that flipped and landed on top of him while testing glass fibre panels or the XJ-13 that rolled end over end during a high-speed run, Dewis managed to walk away without a scratch, didn’t tell his wife and then was back to work the next day.

In the years before his retirement Norman built up a small but highly dedicated vehicle proving department which he headed until his retirement in 1985. He also oversaw the establishment of a dedicated Jaguar test facility at Nardo in Italy and, in 1984, a major base at Phoenix, Arizona for durability and environmental testing in the all-important United States market.

Even outside of retirement – and in more recent times – Dewis spearheaded Jaguar’s 60th anniversary celebrations for the race-winning D-type. Wherever Jaguar was during the year, Norman was present too, chatting with fans and friends, wearing his distinctive bootlace tie and cowboy boots. At the 2014 Goodwood Revival, Dewis – aged 93 – demonstrated a D-type, his speed illustrating that he hadn’t lost his touch behind the wheel. Dewis then consulted with the Jaguar Classic Works on the launch of the continuation Lightweight E-type, a car that he originally helped develop in the 1960s. To his 98th year, Dewis continued to be a global ambassador to and a great friend to the brand.

In recognition of his services to Jaguar and the British motor industry, in 2014 Norman received the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer said: “Today is an enormously sad day for the Jaguar brand, Jaguar fans worldwide, and for me personally. Putting Norman’s hugely decorated career aside, his friendly nature, captivating storytelling and unbridled enthusiasm made him exactly the kind of man you couldn’t help but want to spend time with – he will be sorely missed.

“The Jaguar brand is synonymous with a number of big personalities; the founder, Sir William Lyons, the great designer, Malcolm Sayer, innovative engineer, Bill Heynes, and – of course – the great test driver, Norman Dewis. Norman’s name will quite rightly go down in Jaguar history; without his contribution to the brand during his 33-year career, or as a global ambassador in his later years, Jaguar just wouldn’t be the same. So, I hope the world will join me and everyone associated with Jaguar Land Rover in saying: thank you, Norman.”

It is a shame that we will no longer witness Norman’s 100th birthday wish – he promised his many Jaguar fans and friends from around the world that he would drive the C-type to 100 mph to celebrate his 100 years and love of the brand. Norman with his trustee Jaguar ‘leaper’ walking stick would have done it in style, with a cheeky smile.

HONORING OUR VETERANS JDCLI AT STONY BROOK VETERANS HOME AND CLUB BARBECUE By Mike Carroll, President Photos courtesy of :DAVID TROTMAN-WILKENS:

The weather shined for our club on Saturday June 22nd and that let us put smiles on the faces of the Veterans at the Stony Brook Home.

After a scenic group drive from Northport, we had great support from the members and were able to display 17 cars in front of the Veterans Home. Jaguars spanned the years from two 1967 E-Types to a new F- Type along with assorted other models in-between. From all of the car and military experience stories and the large number of pictures taken with the Vets and cars, it was a great time had by all. The enthusiasm and excitement all around was really great.

This was the special kind of event where we were able, in a small way, give something back to our Veterans who have served all of us. The honoring of these brave people was just plain good for the soul.

We later had another group drive to Meg and Eliud’s home for the barbecue. It was a really fantastic layout which allowed all those attending to park their cars on the lawn adjacent to the food and drink – which there was lots of! The main dishes provided by our hosts. Eliud was the grill master and side dishes and desserts were brought by those attending was varied and delicious

THANK YOU TO MEG AND ELIUD FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY AND A GREAT TIME

Remember, our next event will be on July 20th when we will visit Herb Weterson’s Car Collection!

According to the accompanying Heritage certificate, this E-Type was manufactured on November 19, 1962 and first sold in New York as a Left- Hand Drive Roadster in Black over Beige leather.

Graham Hill’s celebrated the E-Type’s racing debut in April of 1961. The elevation of the GT class to Manufacturers’ Championship status for 1963 prompted Jaguar to develop a few very special lightweight cars to challenge the likes of Ferrari. In the 1990s, this Series I E-Type was sent back to England to replicate the racy lightweight cars. All conversion work was performed by Zealia Engineering in Suffolk, UK including the conversion of Left to Right Hand Drive for racing and street use in England. The 3.8 liter belt-driven dry sump engne was built by renowned Jaguar racing expert, Rob Beere. The engine was built with 9.1 pistons, wide blade rods, a larger water pump, a Zealia custom radiator, and 45 DCOE triple Weber carburetors.

Zealia engineering reports the engine prodcues 250bhp at the wheels fed through a Getrag 5-speed and 3.31 final drive ratio rear end with a limited slip. The E-Type sits on original pattern lightweight magnesium wheels with 7 inch front wheels and 7.5 inch rears with three-ear knockoffs. The standard E-Type suspension was retained, with higher spring rates and front and rear Koni shocks. Front brakes are Willwood 4 pot Superlite 11s with alloy calipers and Girling XJ for the rear brakes. The build utilized the Series I base, floor and bulkhead with a lightweight works- type gearbox tunnel to accommodate the Getrag. All remaining panels, including rear fenders and tail section, doors, boot lid, hardtop, and engine cover are composite in nature, with Lightweight dimensions to include flared rear arches. Other build items include a 2 inch FIA spec roll hoop, alloy outside fuel filler, vented boot lid and hardtop, Luke 4-point belt harnesses, Moto Lita steering wheel, Vicarage speedo and tach, dash mounted battery cutoff switch, Plexiglass side and rear windows, outside bonnet and boot latches and Lucas PL lights.

The new recipient of this build was Mr. Mark Wright who used the E-Type at various race events throughout England. This E-Type saw use at Brands Hatch, Mallory Parkm Donington Park, Oulton Park and Silverstone. Wright drove the Lightweight to several poles and wins. Many of his race and results sheets are accompanied in the documents file. During his ownership, Wright held the car on a V5 UK registration document. After a few years around the circuits, Wright sold the E-Type in 2001 to Mr. Aldo Vinzio of Switzerland. Mr. Vinzio was granted a FIVA identity card in 2001, of which a color copy is inclouded in the files. After Mr. Vinzio’s ownership of limited use around Europe, the E-Type then changed hands in 2008 and was brought back to the United States by Mr. Bret Curtis, a gentlemen racer out of Austin, TX. It was then sold and road registered to a collector in California. During this ownership, the body and hardtop received a thorough repaint to period correct Jaguar Gunmetal Grey, new weather stripping, bonnet and boot latches and bonnet straps.

The Zealia Lightweight E-Types have their own place in the world of Classic Jaguars. Based upon a correct E-Type chassis, this example is beautifully shaped to replicate a proper Lightweight. The result is a very light, very fast and very competent E-Type suitable for use on both road and track. While this Lightweight Conversion clearly has competition orientation, it is currently titled and road-registered in the United States. The driving experience is certainly visceral, but not so aggressive or raw that it could not be enjoyed on road focused rally or tour events, or for spirited jaunts in the countryside. This E-Type has been well taken care of by its previous owner in California and has been maintained regardless of use. This E-Type comes with a large folder with much racing documentation, ownership history, European registrations, a Zealia Engineering spec sheet and a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate. A recent road test attests to the car performing flawlessly in every way, and it is indeed ready for immediate use and enjoyment. $225,000.00 Contact Us About This Model Tel: (631) 425-1555 Fax: (631) 425-6185

Your participation is our guide to the future.

Our hobby, and business for some of us, has changed quite a lot since I started seriously collecting, and writing, over 30 years ago. For awhile, in the 1990s there was a publication for collectors of automobilia, but since its demise long ago, there has been absolutely nothing for all of us …..until now. I am truly excited about this new publication, and I am delighted to be a part of it.

The Hispano Suiza Stork is one of the most well-known mascots in the automotive world. Designed by Frederick Bazin to honor France’s renowned WWI flying ace George Guynemere. Hispano was involved in wartime aviation engineering, and the company adopted The Stork as being representative of France’s aerial successes.

This example was photographed on one of the beautiful Hispano-Suiza cars within the Mullin Automotive Museum’s famed collection in Oxnard, CA. For more great history and automobilia, please visit AutoMobiliaResource.com and subscribe! 19th Annual British Legends Weekend

Friday, October 11, 2019 to Sunday, October 13, 2019

This Columbus Day weekend, set sail for Plymouth, Massachusetts, and the Cape Cod British Car Club’s annual three-day celebration of British motoring. Get your land legs Friday night at the Meet-and-Greet social. Then on Saturday, tour the back roads of Boston’s quaint South Shore harbor and villages, or join us on a “Discover Plymouth” scavenger ride. Reward yourself that evening at a banquet at the Plimoth Plantation.

Finish your visit Sunday by viewing classic British cars (9 AM to 3 PM) on a large field that will also feature vendors, food and beverage trucks, and a tent with tables and chairs where you can relax and enjoy your refreshments. The Sunday show is free and includes ample parking. Cash donations to benefit Pilgrim Squadron Civil Air Patrol cadets would be appreciated. Friday and Saturday events, and entry of a British vehicle in the show, are by registration.

For details, visit the Cape Cod British Car Club website: capecodbritishcarclub.org.

FEBRUARY 16, 2016

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA - If you like British cars, and insist on good art, watercolor artist George Ellis has lots of fine art prints to choose from. Whether your interest is in MGs, Jaguars, Austin-Healeys, or other British cars, Mr. Ellis offers a growing list of prints featuring the classics.

Mr. Ellis is not new to painting cars; he's been painting for 15 years. What's new is that he is now offering Open Edition and Limited Edition prints of his work at his Web site, www.GeorgeEllis.com. The prints are produced to the highest standards.

At the George Ellis Gallery online, visitors are greeted by a light green SS-100 Jaguar in a beach scene. Clicking the first of the links at the left of the screen, one reads "About the Art," which offers a brief synopsis of the artist, the art, the prints, and how to order prints through the site.

The prints come in a variety of sizes: most are 11x14 inches, some are larger (up to 16x20 inches), and some are available as 5x7 inch prints. They're produced with archival inks on watercolor-type paper to hold their true colors well over time. It's expensive to make prints this way, but fine art is meant to last indefinitely.

Mr. Ellis's art looks attractive on the walls of any home, garage, shop, office, and of course "mancaves." Limited Edition prints in particular represent an investment in art that can be expected to gain in value over the years.

To visit the George Ellis Gallery online, go to www.GeorgeEllis.com. The site accepts major credit cards and PayPal, and it offers "old school" customers the low-tech option of printing out a paper order form. If you have questions or would like to leave a comment, use the Contact form in the links list. The Gallery also accepts commissions; e-mail inquiries to [email protected] or call the Gallery at 631- 757-3722 during business hours for details. www.GeorgeEllis.com • 631-757-3722 •P.O.
