Michael Elavsky Assistant Professor of the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies John S. Nichols Professor of the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT This project is a comparative case-study of the U.S. and Korean (South Korea) film industries along historical, structural, and financial dimensions. The genesis of this thesis came through an overall fascination with the film industry globally as nations compete and cooperate with each other, as well as contend with the dominance of the U.S. film industry. It uses the industrial organization model focusing primarily on "market structure." Further, it applies A.J. Scott’s bipartite (major, independent) and tripartite (major, subsidiary, independent) models of the U.S. film industry. The analysis is mainly descriptive being informed by historical development. To elaborate on market structure, samples of studio/mainstream and independent films were collected in both the U.S. and Korean film industries. The samples were analyzed along production company affiliation, distribution affiliation, sources of funding, and other elements.

The House of Sand and Fog Abstract This is a review of The House of Sand and Fog (2003). This film er view is available in Journal of Religion & Film: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol8/iss2/18 Van Dyke: The House of Sand and Fog The House of Sand and Fog, directed by Vadim Perelman, is so suffused with atmospheric effects that they nearly overwhelm everything else on the screen. The constant rain, mist, and eponymous fog are meant to reflect the film's moods of anxiety and desperation; but since they are so rarely leavened by contrasting emotional tones, the film becomes one long dirge of existential angst. Despite its depressing surface, this is a worthwhile film - especially for its insights into a type of spiritual vacuity common to America at the beginning of the twentieth century. Jennifer Connelly plays a young woman named Kathy Nicolo whose husband has, perversely, left her because of her desire to have children.

Not one has the poise to play the leading role. He is getting ready to leave when Vanda appears: an unbridled and brazen whirlwind of energy. Vanda embodies everything Thomas hates. She is crude, idiotic, and will stop at nothing to get the part. But when Thomas finds himself backed into a corner and lets her try her luck, he is amazed to see Vanda transformed. Not only has she found the right props and costumes, but she understands the character (whose name she shares) intimately, and knows all her lines by heart. The "audition" lengthens and intensifies, and Thomas’s attraction starts to develop into an obsession… 3 INTERVIEW WITH ROMAN POLANSKI / DIRECTOR, CO-WRITER AND PRODUCER How did you come across David Ives’ play, inspired by Sacher-Masoch’s novel? • Narratives of Violence, Myths of Youth: American Youth Identity in Fictional Narratives of School Shootings
Narratives of Violence, Myths of Youth: American Youth Identity in Fictional Narratives of School Shootings Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kathryn E. Linder, M.A. Graduate Program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee Linda Mizejewski, Advisor Valerie Kinloch, Co-Advisor Rebecca Wanzo Copyright by Kathryn E. Linder 2011 Abstract Throughout the 1990s in the United States, a series of suburban school shootings perpetrated by young, white males disrupted contemporary perceptions of American youth, often a population configured in terms of ideal whiteness. In conjunction with sensationalized media coverage of school shootings, various fictional portrayals of suburban youth violence also emerged throughout this period as what Henry Giroux has called “public pedagogy” that served to further influence national perceptions of youth. In this body of film, television and literary narratives, school violence is often related to other national concerns surrounding American youth identity such as deviant sexuality and teen pregnancy. While a good deal of scholarly attention has focused on popular representations of education and youth generally, little has been written about these specific fictionalizations of school shootings and what they signify. This dissertation offers a feminist, discursive analysis of these fictional narratives of suburban school violence and argues that rampage violence narratives are intricately connected to national anxieties regarding youth, citizenship, threats to white masculinity, and American identity. In order to illustrate the complexities of themes present across popular culture mediums, my research delves into the purpose of the narratives and what they signify about contemporary American youth identity.

(202) 357-7681 Website: www.umlsct.org, E-mail: [email protected] Major Movie Filmed at Ukrainian Museum and College During the week of August 14, St. Basil College and the Ukrainian Museum in Stamford, was the location for the filming of a major motion picture now being shot at various locations around Connecticut. The movie, starring Uma Thurman, best known for her roles in “Kill Bill” and “Pulp Fiction”, will be released in the spring of 2007. This film is being directed by Vadim Perelman, whose first film, “House of Sand and Fog”, brought him critical acclaim and Academy Award nominations for two of his actors. Mr. Perelman was born in Kyiv, Ukraine and emigrated to Canada with his mother, at the age of fifteen, after the tragic loss of his father. “In Bloom” is the current working title of the film based upon the novel, “The Life before Her Eyes”, by Laura Kasischke. The story depicts the life of a young woman who experiences a Columbine type shooting in high school and follows her into maturity, at the age of forty, living an idyllic life in the suburbs. In the film, the lead character picks her daughter up at a Catholic girl’s school with a circular driveway and a spacious front lawn. These scenes are shot in the Ukrainian Museum, St. Basil College, and the lawns of the college property. St. Basil College and the Museum staff were most excited when the location and set directors arrived on Thursday, August 10 to transform the museum dining rooms and porch into a classroom at an imaginary Catholic school.
