University of Alberta Making Magyars, Creating Hungary: András Fáy, István Bezerédj and Ödön Beöthy’s Reform-Era Contributions to the Development of Hungarian Civil Society by Eva Margaret Bodnar A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics © Eva Margaret Bodnar Spring 2011 Edmonton, Alberta Permission is hereby granted to the University of Alberta Libraries to reproduce single copies of this thesis and to lend or sell such copies for private, scholarly or scientific research purposes only. Abstract The relationship between magyarization and Hungarian civil society during the reform era of Hungarian history (1790-1848) is the subject of this dissertation. This thesis examines the cultural and political activities of three liberal oppositional nobles: András Fáy (1786-1864), István Bezerédj (1796-1856) and Ödön Beöthy (1796-1854). These three men were chosen as the basis of this study because of their commitment to a two- pronged approach to politics: they advocated greater cultural magyarization in the multiethnic Hungarian Kingdom and campaigned to extend the protection of the Hungarian constitution to segments of the non-aristocratic portion of the Hungarian population.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Department of Electronics and Computer Science A mini-thesis submitted for transfer from MPhil to PhD Supervisor: Prof. Wendy Hall and Dr Les Carr Examiner: Dr Nick Gibbins Application of Link Integrity techniques from Hypermedia to the Semantic Web by Rob Vesse February 10, 2011 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE A mini-thesis submitted for transfer from MPhil to PhD by Rob Vesse As the Web of Linked Data expands it will become increasingly important to preserve data and links such that the data remains available and usable. In this work I present a method for locating linked data to preserve which functions even when the URI the user wishes to preserve does not resolve (i.e. is broken/not RDF) and an application for monitoring and preserving the data. This work is based upon the principle of adapting ideas from hypermedia link integrity in order to apply them to the Semantic Web. • German Labor Sports Movement in Slovakia and Its Orientation in Period 1918-1938
History Research, April-June, 2015, Vol. 5, No. 2, 84-97 doi: 10.17265/2159-550X/2015.02.002 D DAVID PUBLISHING German Labor Sports Movement in Slovakia and Its Orientation in Period 1918-1938 Miroslav Bobrík Slovak Technical University, Bratislava, Slovak Republic This is a study of German Labor Sport organizations and unions in Slovakia in the time parameters area 1918-1938. German workers living in Slovakia started to found their own union after 1918. They got a strong support from similar organizations of German workers living in Sudety. The coordinating role was played by the German Socio-Democratic party in Slovakia. The major concentration of these unions was in Bratislava and Eastern Slovakia. Concerning their specialized field, they can be divided into tourism-practising, physical and sport ones. However, the union activities were strongly influenced by political parties. Activities of every union were regional and therefore a strong mutual isolation existed. Keywords: German minority in Slovakia, sports activities, influence of political parties on sport, years 1918-1938 The German ethnic minority never exceeded 5% of the Slovak population in 1918-1945. While in sheer number the Germans did not constitute a significant minority, they played a major role in the politics and business of Slovakia until 1945. Slovak history literature omits German workers’ organizations, be it political, social or artistic (ranging on the left from socialist to communist). The study of these organizations and our awareness of them would certainly round up our understanding of the history of this minority in Slovakia and, furthermore, they would provide an unbiased portrait of this minority particularly in 1918-1945.
