Glenboig Primary School Pathways #glenboigforgold Club Links We display our club links on our information board and distribute their flyers to all our pupils. Lady Rocks Basketball Over the past year we have built up a strong working relationship with Josh Anderson from the Lady Rocks. He has came to assemblies and spoke to the whole school about basketball, provided taster sessions, ran an after school club and started an evening community club based in the school. He has also invited girls along to take part in a Get Active basketball tournament which a number of our pupils attended. Lady Rocks Basketball This flyer has been handed out to pupils and has been displayed on our wall display. The community club is for all local children and not just for Glenboig primary pupils. The school has also provided free transport for pupils and their families to attend an official Glasgow Rocks game and a charity match. Both matches were well attended. The pupil were able to meet the players and the Scottish Rockettes. Pupils in our school have been provided with the opportunity to attend a free Lady Rocks basketball game. Glenboig Primary School have been supported over the past year and a half by both the Lady Rocks Basketball (female) and Glasgow Rocks Pro Basketball (male). Initially, the Lady Rocks got involved with the school to improve the number of girls who were regularly physically active. Following a consultation and curricular input with the P4-P7 girls, an after-school club was created and delivered by professional staff from the Lady Rocks Basketball Club. From here, the girls have also had further input from the club with regular female player visits who’ve supported the school in inspiring the young girls to maintain their attendance at all physical activity clubs, but with a particular focus on the basketball club. The girls continued to grow in both confidence and physical skills and as such, progressed to an inter-school tournament hosted by the Lady Rocks. The girls who represented the school did an excellent job, holding their own and having lots of fun. Following the success of the girls club, the boys at the school wrote to the head teacher to request a boys basketball club. The school answered this request and provided another basketball club in the week, this time for the boys and delivered by a school teacher, who is supported in any possible way required by the Rocks. Basketball is a sport that teaches a lot of social skills and qualities, the key one being confidence. This was most noticeable in the young people when the school brought all of the children to a Glasgow Rocks Pro basketball match, allowing them to witness first hand professional basketball on display, followed by the children getting court access post game to meet the players. For many of the children, this was their first ‘social night’ out with their peers and out of their local community. Finally, since the initial launch of one basketball club, the Rocks have now provided a basketball club at Glenboig on a Monday evening, allowing the school to provide a school to community club pathway for those children wishing to pursue their basketball further. I’ve been very fortunate to work with several schools over the past few years, but I would say that the staff at Glenboig Primary School have been by far the best staff I’ve had the luck of working with. The staff are incredibly committed to the young people in their school and that passion and commitment shines through in the daily conversations they have with every child. There have been countless occasions where the staff have approached the Rocks to provide additional opportunities for their children, or will often join in on extra-curricular school sessions with the pupils to share in their learning experience. This, I have found, has helped both the club and school to further develop the overall physical, mental, emotional and social health & wellbeing of the children participating on the programme. A perfect example of this was when the school arranged to have Glasgow Rocks Captain, Scotland Commonwealth Games and Olympic Athlete, Kieron Achara visit the school. This visit took over the school community with the children researching Kieron’s story, creating a hall of fame for Kieron’s visit and learning more about his journey through sport. Because of this work, Glenboig Primary School was identified as a best practice partner school by the National Lottery Community Fund (formerly the BIG Lottery Fund) who decided to provide the Lady Rocks Basketball with £9,000 to continue supporting the programme at Glenboig, in addition to using this best practice across other North Lanarkshire primary schools. I have no hesitation in recommending Glenboig Primary School for the Sport Scotland Gold School Sport Award. Josh Anderson Club Development Officer – Lady Rocks Sportif Judo John Buchanan from Sportif Judo delivered a fantastic taster session and motivational talk for the whole school. He was in to promote his new judo club starting for beginners. Following this taster session, some of our pupils now attend his classes. Following this, some children have attended holiday clubs ran by Rangers. Cumbernauld Athletics Club Catriona Pettigrew is an ASNA in our school and a coach at Cumbernauld Athletics Club. She has assisted staff during athletics P.E lessons, ran an afterschool club and helped organise an athletics event and sports day.
