Description of the Collection The Stanford News Service is part of the Office of University Communications. The News Service reports and disseminates much of the University's news, via the STANFORD REPORT daily news email. Previously the department was known as the Stanford News and Publications Service, and was a part of the Public Affairs Office. The News Service produced the weekly CAMPUS REPORT (later STANFORD REPORT) and the monthly STANFORD OBSERVER. The News Service was originally created to take over some functions previously performed by the General Secretary's Office. In 1946 a news and information office was created when Frederic O. Glover was appointed Director of Information; when Glover became secretary to the president, Peter C. Allen was named director of Information and Publications. In 1962, The office was expanded and became part of the newly created University Relations Office with Peter Allen as director of Publications and Robert W. Beyers as director of the News Service. News and Publications was again united when Allen was named Associate director of University Relations (and later University editor), and Beyers became director of News and Publications. Created by Dave Snyder, March 2014 1886 Aug. 18 Powel Crosley Jr. is born. 1893 Crosley family moves to College Hill area of Cincinnati. 1906 Powel Crosley Jr. enters University of Cincinnati as an engineering student. 1917 Dec. 13 Powel Crosley Jr. incorporates American Automotive Specialties Company. 1921 Feb. 22 Powel Crosley Jr. and Powel Crosley 111 purchases radio parts and books at Precision Equipment Company. 1921 Last part of 1921 Powel Crosley Jr. starts the Crosley Manufacturing Company. First product built was the Harko Radio Receiver. 1922 April First 20-Watt transmitter at home in College Hill, 8CR. 1922 March 22 First 50-Watt transmitter at Blue Rock Road, WLW, at manufacturing plant. 1922 May Manufacturing plant moves to Colerain and Alfred Streets.     The California Historical Radio Society (CHRS), is a non-profit educational corporation chartered in the State of California. CHRS was formed in 1974 to promote the restoration and preservation of early radio and broadcasting. Our goal is to enable the exchange of ideas and information on the history of radio, particularly in the West, with emphasis on collecting, preserving, and displaying early equipment, literature, and programs. Yearly membership is $30. CHRS Museum at Historic KRE CHRS is fortunate to occupy and restore the historic KRE radio station building located at 601 Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, CA. The KRE station an important landmark in S.F. Bay Area radio history. Orig- inally constructed in 1937, the KRE station was one of the first facilities built in California specifically for broadcasting. The KRE site has been transmitting AM radio signals for over 70 years and still operates today as KVTO. In 1972, it was the location for scenes featuring “Wolfman Jack” and Richard Dreyfuss in the George Lucas film, “American Graffiti.” The restoration of the station plus creation of a museum and educational center gives us an environment to share our knowledge and love of radio. It enables us to create an appreciation and understanding for a new generation of antique radio collectors and historians. This annual publication takes a comprehensive view of Stanford as an institution that is investing in sustainability across all aspects of the university. The report summarizes operational, academic and programmatic achievements and presents metrics and trends in campus sustainability. The first half of this multipurpose report presents featured topics and initiatives in operations and academia, demonstrating Stanford’s commitment to sustainability in teaching and action.
