CELEBRATING IN STYLE! On a rather blustery Tuesday morning on 2nd June, 8000 ladies from the Women’s Institute travelled to ’s most prestigious building – Buckingham Palace. They came from all over and Wales with one purpose, to celebrate 100 years of the WI at a Royal Garden Party in the grounds of Buckingham Palace.

Dressed in their finest clothes and “posh” hats, they made a vibrant and exhilarating display. Tourists waved from open deck buses and asked for photos, it was the start of a very eventful day.

Clutching their invitations the ladies entered the main gates of the Palace, and walked through to the gardens at the back. There they found three marquees serving tea and cakes, whilst two military bands played. The gardens were beautiful and seen to the best advantage as the sun came out.

Precisely at 3.00 pm the HRH Duchess of Cornwall, HRH Countess of Wessex and HRH Princess Alexandra, all of whom are connected with the WI, came out of the Palace and stood whilst the National Anthem was played. The Beefeaters, holding their ceremonial staffs, parted the crowds as the royal party came down the terrace steps to join in the fun.

Each member of the royal family walked down a line of ladies, shaking hands and chatting. It was a memorable occasion for every WI member who either observed or

4 Volume 4, Issue 2 2015 spoke to the royal party, including two lucky ladies from South Cave and others from the East Yorkshire Federation.

Tea for the royal party was served in the royal marquee and they were joined by representatives from every WI Federation throughout the country, as well as the original Calendar Girls, and other dignitaries. Everyone attending enjoyed tasty dainty sandwiches and cakes decorated with a symbol of royalty.

After tea and fond farewells to many new friends, Members left with happy memories, some even bursting into a spontaneous rendition of “Jerusalem”! Everyone who attended knew they had been the fortunate few from the whole WI organisation to participate in a wonderful, but also historic afternoon.

Centenary Annual Meeting

On Thursday 4 June the Royal Albert Hall, London, witnessed yet another milestone in the history of the WI. Her Majesty the Queen, together with HRH Princess Royal and HRH Countess of Wessex attended the Annual Meeting. After being welcomed to the meeting by the National Chairman, Janice Langley, and the singing of the National Anthem, Her Majesty addressed over 2000 ladies formally opening the meeting. She said the WI had every reason to be proud of its heritage and history. The royal party joined in singing “Jerusalem” before receiving posies comprising the Centenary Rose, from three young girls who were all granddaughters of members. The royal party left after the Queen had cut the Centenary Cake.

The Annual Meeting was also streamed to Cineworld Cinemas around the country in order that every member could join in the celebrations live. East Yorkshire members attended Cineworld at Kingswood, and sang the National Anthem, “Jerusalem” and clapped heartily at the speakers.

One of the speakers was Lucy Worsley who had the audience laughing at her antics researching the history of the WI for a television documentary entitled “Cake Bakers and Trouble Makers”. All agreed, it was another wonderful day enjoyed by the ladies of the East Yorkshire Federation of WIs.

The next big celebration for South Cave WI and others in our area is a lunch at Cave Castle in September.

BEER FESTIVAL 2015 9 Volume 4, Issue 2 2015

Our thanks to all those who attended the fifth beer festival at the South Cave Sporting Club on the 20th June. The event was blessed with sunshine (eventually!) and provided 14 excellent varieties of real ale through Yorkshire Real Ales in Doncaster, All Hallows Brewery in Goodmanham and Crystalbrew in Brough; cyder from Moorland Farm in North Newbald; a wine selection chosen by Flourish and Prosper wine merchant in and lager/soft drinks provided by Costcutter, South Cave. Marquees were provided by Partee Marquees in Newport. The entertainment was provided by solo singer Chris Hill, with local bands Faze 3 and Ten34, with singer Holly Skinner. The organisers would like to gratefully thank all those volunteers who gave their time to help at the event, which would otherwise not be possible. The ethos of this event is to provide a local event for the local community. As well as proving to be an enjoyable evening in the open air, the event was successful in raising funds for the Club. Some of the funds have already been utilised on the costly business of pitch care and maintenance. For your diaries, next year’s Beer Festival is scheduled for Saturday 18 June. EAST RIDING RESIDENTS SAVE MORE THAN £1.4M THANKS TO YORSWITCH SCHEME

An energy-switching scheme organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council has now saved residents more than £1.4million on their fuel bills.

YORSwitch is a free scheme which gives residents the chance to make savings on their fuel bills by registering to take part in a collective auction of energy suppliers.

More than 5,100 households in the East Riding registered for the most recent YORSwitch auction. These were combined with a number of similar initiatives around the UK to create a collective of 30,000 households from more than 100 local authorities as part of the Big Community Switch.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council regularly attracts high numbers of participants and this has resulted in iChoosr, which runs the Big Community Switch, presenting a Certificate of Recognition for the amount of money - £1,160,771.63 - the council has saved its residents.

Since the certificate was awarded, hundreds more switches have taken place, bringing the cumulative total for domestic electricity and gas savings over the eight previous rounds to over £1.4million in the East Riding.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "It's extremely pleasing to see how much money the council has been able to help people save through this scheme.

"The council has regularly attracted large numbers of participants for these auctions and this has been recognised with this certificate. I'd like to thank everyone involved at the council in organising the scheme for making these savings possible for our residents.”

Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "I would encourage anyone who hasn't already taken part in YORSwitch to do so. There is no commitment to make the switch but for the vast majority of

13 Volume 4, Issue 2 2015 those who do there have been substantial savings of several hundred pounds a year on their bills."

Two residents in the Brough area are among the thousands of East Riding people who have benefitted from taking part in YORSwitch.

Gladys Collick said “I switched last year and saved £274. I told my friend Kath about the scheme and she registered and switched and saved money too. I will be registering for the next auction as my current tariff is due to expire.”

Kath Freitag added: “The scheme is a great idea. Lots of people we know ask us questions about the scheme and are switching and saving money too.”

In the latest auction, more than 60% of residents in the East Riding who completed the registration process went on to make the switch, saving on average £267 each.

The next auction will be the ninth round and residents will be able to register their interest from Tuesday 4 August until Monday 12 October, with the auction then held on Tuesday 13 October.

Householders who register are under no obligation to switch to the auction-winning supplier’s tariff offer but, if they do accept, it is an easy and straightforward process which East Riding of Yorkshire Council taking care of any queries.

The scheme is open to all households which pay monthly direct debit or via a pre-payment meter.

Once households have had the opportunity to register their interest, a reverse auction is held to invite energy suppliers to compete with their best offers.

You can register your details for the ninth auction, without commitment, by visiting www.eastriding.gov.uk/yorswitch

The Government has recognised the success of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's approach to the YORSwitch scheme by including it as a best 14 Volume 4, Issue 2 2015

practise case study in its new fuel poverty strategy for England called Cutting The Cost Of Keeping Warm.

The registration period for the ninth auction opens on Tuesday 4 August 2015 and closes on Monday 12 October 2015.

The auction for energy suppliers will be held on Tuesday 13 October 2015.

Offer letters and emails will be sent out from Friday 23 October 2015.
