  • On Space in Cinema
1 On Space in Cinema Jacques Levy Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne [email protected] Abstract The relationship between space and cinema is problematic. Cinema can be seen as a spatial art par excellence, but there are good reasons why this view is superficial. This article focuses on geographical films, which aim to increase our understanding of this dimension of the social world by attempting to depict inhabited space and the inhabitance of this space. The argument is developed in two stages. First, I attempt to show the absence both of space as an environment and of spatiality as an agency in cinematographic production. Both of these contribute to geographicity. Second, I put forward and expand on the idea of opening up new channels between cinema and the social sciences that take space as their object. This approach implies a move away from popular fiction cinema (and its avatar the documentary film) and an establishment of links with aesthetic currents from cinema history that are more likely to resonate with both geography and social science. The article concludes with a “manifesto” comprising ten principles for a scientific cinema of the inhabited space. Keywords: space, spatiality, cinema, history of cinema, diegetic space, distancing, film music, fiction, documentary, scientific films Space appears to be everywhere in film, but in fact it is (almost) nowhere. This observation leads us to reflect on the ways in which space is accommodated in films. I will focus in particular on what could be termed “geographical” films in the sense that they aim to increase our understanding of this dimension of the social world by 2 attempting to depict inhabited space and the inhabitance of this space.

Mémoi In attempting to portray the Holocaust and crimes against humanity on the The Shoah on screen – representing crimes against humanity big screen, film-makers generally have to address the key question of realism. This is both an ethical and an artistic issue. The full range of approaches has emember been adopted, covering documentaries and fiction, historical reconstructions such as Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, depicting reality in all its details, and more symbolic films such as Roberto Benigni’s Life is beautiful. Some films have been very controversial, and it is important to understand why. Is cinema the best way of informing the younger generations about what moire took place, or should this perhaps be left, for example, to CD-Roms, videos Memoi or archive collections? What is the difference between these and the cinema as an art form? Is it possible to inform and appeal to the emotions without being explicit? Is emotion itself, though often very intense, not ambivalent? These are the questions addressed by this book which sets out to show that the cinema, a major art form today, cannot merely depict the horrors of concentration camps but must also nurture greater sensitivity among increas- Mémoire ingly younger audiences, inured by the many images of violence conveyed in the media. ireRemem moireRem The Shoah on screen – www.coe.int Representing crimes The Council of Europe has 47 member states, covering virtually the entire continent of Europe. • Borelli Gentleman, Professional and Profiteer
Gentleman, professional and profiteer. Production of space and real estate community* Guido Borelli** Introduction Real estate development is one of the few areas that a person can enter with little expertise and become wealthy in a short time. With the right financial backing, a little business savvy, and careful attention to detail, you too can earn whatever you want to earn. (Tanya Davis, Real Estate Developer's Handbook, 2007) “The Expo 2015 is regarded as a saving grace for Milan and its suburbs. In truth, behind the loud and vulgar propaganda claiming it promotes a healthy and environmentally sustainable food production, hide the most venal interests of a few large property speculators behind the event. (...) The Expo 2015 is a machine that eats nutritious foods and generates concrete and asphalt for the 'usual suspects', without excluding the overindulging infiltrations of the Mafia.” (Communist Party of Lombardy, Expo 2015: A machine who generate real estate speculation, 2013) To the eyes of a sociologist the world of real estate is ambiguous. From the moment in which we take on the task of better understanding its role within contemporary society, we immediately realize that there is a lack of available knowledge on the subject and that the little information that can be found is decisively polarized in two extreme views. On one hand are all the studies, research, and treatise that explain how the sector works, how it is articulated, and what the necessary skills to enter it are. On the other hand, there is a fairly extensive body of literature belonging to the 'investigative journalism' genre which takes interest in the field only at the onset of periodical scandals.
