Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Jun 00 Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme - Recommended Band Size List Page 1 Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme Recommended Band Size List - Birds of Australia and its Territories Number 24 - May 2000 This list contains all extant bird species which have been recorded for Australia and its Territories, including Antarctica, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island and Cocos and Keeling Islands, with their respective RAOU numbers and band sizes as recommended by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme. The list is in two parts: Part 1 is in taxonomic order, based on information in "The Taxonomy and Species of Birds of Australia and its Territories" (1994) by Leslie Christidis and Walter E. Boles, RAOU Monograph 2, RAOU, Melbourne, for non-passerines; and “The Directory of Australian Birds: Passerines” (1999) by R. Schodde and I.J. Mason, CSIRO Publishing, Collingwood, for passerines. Part 2 is in alphabetic order of common names. The lists include sub-species where these are listed on the Census of Australian Vertebrate Species (CAVS version 8.1, 1994). CHOOSING THE CORRECT BAND Selecting the appropriate band to use combines several factors, including the species to be banded, variability within the species, growth characteristics of the species, and band design. The following list recommends band sizes and metals based on reports from banders, compiled over the life of the ABBBS. For most species, the recommended sizes have been used on substantial numbers of birds. For some species, relatively few individuals have been banded and the size is listed with a question mark. In still other species, too few birds have been banded to justify a size recommendation and none is made. -

ROSE, Associate, The Australian Museum, 6-8 College Street, Sydney, N.S.W. 2000 (present address: 61 Boundary Street, Forster, N.S.W. 2428) The following notes are incidental records of the food of some passerine species, from personal observations and from an examination of the stomach contents of birds found dead (road-kills, window-kills and cat-kills). They are intended to supplement the lists of Barker & Vestjens (1990) and Lepschi (1993) for the respective species. Records listed by Rose (1973, 1974) are not included here. Notes on non-nectar foods of some honeyeaters are published separately (Rose 1999). Stomach contents were examined microscopically, and identified by comparison with reference material and, for insects, with the aid of a manual (CSIRO 1970). Insect nomenclature follows CSIRO (1980) and, for moths, Common (1990). Superb Fairy-wren Malurus cyaneus Stomachs: Eight stomachs, from various locations, contained the following unquantified material: beetle (Coleoptera); ant (Formicidae); cricket/grasshopper (Orthoptera); fly (Diptera); butterfly/moth (Lepidoptera); bug (Hemiptera); and spider (Araneida). We extracted and purified DNA from fresh muscle tissue, liver tissue, or toepad clips from 113 vouchered museum specimens (Supplementary File S1) using the Qiagen DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit following the manufacturer’s protocol. We quantified DNA extracts using a Qubit fluorometer, and we prepared aliquots of DNA extracted from muscle and liver at 10 ng/µL in 60 µL volume for shearing. We sheared each DNA sample to 400–600 bp using a Qsonica Q800R sonicator for 15–45 cycles, with each cycle running for 20 seconds on and 20 seconds off at 25% amplitude. -

AUSTRALIA COMPREHENSIVE TARGET SPECIES CUSTOM TOUR TRIP REPORT 23 AUGUST – 1 OCTOBER 2019 By Andy Walker The Endangered (BirdLife International) Mallee Emu-wren has a tiny global range, and we had excellent views of a pair while birdwatching in Victoria. www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | TRIP REPORT Australia, Aug-Oct 2019 Overview This 40-day custom birdwatching tour of Australia commenced in Adelaide, South Australia, on the 23rd of August 2019 and ended in Sydney, New South Wales, on the 1st of October 2019. The tour also visited the states and territories of Victoria, Northern Territory, and Queensland. A pelagic trip was taken off southern South Australia (Port MacDonnell). Unfortunately a planned pelagic trip off southern Queensland (Southport) was canceled due to illness. This custom birding tour route was South Australia (Adelaide to Port MacDonnell) - Victoria (circuit around the western section of the state) - New South Wales (a brief stop for parrots along the state border) -Victoria (remainder of the western circuit back to Melbourne) - Northern Territory (Alice Springs area) - Northern Territory (Darwin to Kakadu and back) - Queensland (circuit out of Brisbane) - New South Wales (circuit out of Sydney). Several areas visited on this tour feature in our Australia set departure tours (e.g. East Coast and Northern Territory tours). A list of target birds was provided for the tour (the clients’ third trip to Australia), and these became the focus of the tour route and birding, though new trip birds encountered were also enjoyed! A total of 421 bird species were seen (plus 5 species heard only), including many client target birds. -

David Bishop David Bishop Bird Tours 2014 David Bishop Bird Tours Papua New Guinea and NE Queensland March 20 – April 6, 2014 Leader: David Bishop This bespoke tour was specially designed to seek out some very distinctive, elusive families and near-families in addition to as many as possible of the distinctive genera. In this and just about everything else I think it fair to say we were enormously successful. This was in no small part due to Tim’s skill in the field and general diligence plus some fine help in from the likes of Leonard, Daniel, Sam and Max. Undoubtedly this was one of the most thoroughly enjoyable and stimulating tours I have ever operated. We both learnt a great deal, for me not least that birding in PNG during late March and early April makes a very pleasant and productive change from the more traditional months. Needless to say we shared a great deal of fun in addition to enjoying some truly spectacular birds, landscape as well some fine cultural experiences. Despite PNG’s sometimes, insalubrious reputation, the people are undoubtedly among the most friendly and fascinating peoples on our planet. Just a handful of this tour’s highlights included: An enormous adult male Southern Cassowary permitted a very close encounter for 30 minutes at Cassowary House – I do believe New Guineans are correct in NOT classifying this beast as a bird! One of the very best day’s birding I can ever recall in Varirata National Park. -

Conservation Advice (Incorporating Listing Advice) for Robertson Rainforest in the Sydney Basin Bioregion
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) (s266B) Conservation Advice (incorporating listing advice) for Robertson Rainforest in the Sydney Basin Bioregion 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was set up under the EPBC Act to give advice to the Minister for the Environment (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee conducted a listing assessment following the ecological community being placed on the 2017 Finalised Priority Assessment List. 3. The Committee provided its advice on the Robertson Rainforest in the Sydney Basin Bioregion ecological community to the Minister in 2019. The Committee recommended that: o the ecological community merits listing as Critically Endangered; and o a recovery plan is not required for the ecological community at this time. 4. A draft conservation advice for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that is relevant to the consideration of the ecological community for listing. 5. In 2019 the Minister accepted the Committee’s advice, adopted this document as the approved conservation advice and agreed no recovery plan is required at this time. The Minister amended the list of threatened ecological communities under section 184 of the EPBC Act to include Robertson Rainforest in the Sydney Basin Bioregion ecological community in the critically endangered category. 6. At the time of this advice, this ecological community was also listed as threatened under the New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. -

1 Validation methods for trophic niche models 2 3 To assign links between nodes (species), we used trophic niche-space models (e.g., [1]). 4 Each of these models has two quantile regressions that define the prey-size range a 5 predator of a given size is predicted to consume. Species whose body mass is within the 6 range of a predator’s prey size, as identified by the trophic niche-space model, are predicted 7 to be prey, while those outside the range are predicted not to be eaten. 8 9 The broad taxonomy of a predator helps to predict predation interactions [2]. To optimize 10 our trophic niche-space model, we therefore tested whether including taxonomic class of 11 predators improved the fit of quantile regressions. Using trophic (to identify which species 12 were predators), body mass, and taxonomic data, we fitted and compared five quantile 13 regression models (including a null model) to the GloBI data. In each model, we log10- 14 transformed the dependent variable prey body mass, and included for the independent 15 variables different combinations of log10-transformed predator body mass, predator class, 16 and the interaction between these variables (Supplementary Table S4). We log10- 17 transformed both predator and prey body mass to linearize the relationship between these 18 variables. We fit the five quantile regressions to the upper and lower 5% of prey body mass, 19 and compared model fits using the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The predator body 20 mass*predator class model fit the 95th quantile data best, whereas the predator body mass 21 + predator class model fit the 5th quantile data marginally better than the aforementioned 22 interaction model (Supplementary Figure S2, Supplementary Table S4).
