Abstract

In Taiwan, we can have a lot of chances to contact the foreign cultures, including Denmark. Denmark is a very wealthy nation and the local people are the happiest in the world. The study will explore three suspects, including the design of Denmark national flag, the origin of Denmark national flag, and the cultural characteristic of Denmark national flag.

Most interviewees (76%) expressed that they have seen the Denmark National Flag; however, up to 48% of them misunderstood the picture of it as “star” instead of “cross”. Because Europe of North national are similar, most of people are usually confused. Therefore, we want to make a study about the Denmark National Flag carefully.

A Study of Cognition of High School Students for Denmark National Flag

I. Introduction

I.1. Background

The background of the project is that because common and popular for modern people in Taiwan. Even if in Taiwan, we can have a lot of chances to contact the foreign cultures. For example, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland related information. Denmark is a very wealthy nation, and the local people have a happy life in Denmark. Furthermore, their poverty gap is tiny and they are the happiest in the world.

I.2. Purpose of Study

The purpose of the study was to examine the concept of Denmark National flag for High School Students. The study will explore three suspects, including the design of Denmark national flag, the origin of Denmark national flag, and the cultural characteristic of Denmark national flag. The questions of this Study are mentioned below:

Q1.What is the history of the Denmark national flag? Q2.What is the color of the Denmark national flag? Q3.What is the meaning of the Denmark national flag?

II. Methods

II.1. Searching the Internet

In order to satisfy our curiosity, we found some information through Internet, which helped us get the answer. The keywords we used to search on the Internet were the origin of the Denmark national flag and its color and meaning. Furthermore, we used some of the information to generate our questionnaire. For making more accurate research, we foraged in books and corrected false information on the Internet.

II.2. Make a Questionnaire

To solve questions, we made a questionnaire to know people’s knowledge about the Denmark national flag and how they know it. We asked one hundred and six people to help us and gave them our questionnaire. We put the results we had investigated in order. Then, we classified them and analyzed the data we had collected. Through these processes, we knew more about the Denmark national flag.

III. Findings / Discussion

III.1. History of the Flag of Denmark

The Danish flag was adopted in 1625 and is generally considered the oldest continuously used national flag in the world. Legend has it that the Danish flag fell from the skies on June 15, 1219, the day in which King Waldemar II defeated the Estonians in battle. Though, Historians think the Danish flag was derived from old crusader banners of the time.

The picture in the Gerle Armorial (1370-86), which is considered to be the oldest representation of the Dannebrog actually shows a short flag with centered cross throughout (see the reprint in Smith (1975) p. 64). I have respected this flag.

III.2. The Colors of Flag

The Flag of Denmark is red with a white Scandinavian cross that extends to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side.

The widely known red and white flag became Denmark's official national flag in 1625 and serves as the base for all other Scandinavian flags. In fact, the so-called Scandinavian Cross on the left of the Danish flag is repeated in all other flags of the Nordic region. Flag variations are based on color to distinguish the flag of other countries.

The cross of this flag in white color is a symbol for Christianity. hand up their national flag on public holidays, birthdays of members of the royal family, as well as military flag days.

III.3. The Meaning of the Flag of Denmark

According to the website, the official website of Denmark, the name of the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, meaning ‘the flag of the Danes’ or ‘the red flag’. The meaning of the two colors is stands for red strength and courage, fearlessness and for white truth and especially peace.

It is the first encountered in a Danish text from 1478 and in a Dutch text from 100 years before that. Therefore, the Flag of Denmark consists of red with a white cross.

III.4. The Ratio of the Flag of Denmark

The ratio of its height to its width is 28:37. The flag was originally a perfect square, but was later elongated. A red field charged with a white cross extending to the edges; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side.

We can see from the bar chart that 24 percentages of the senior high school students who have seen the Denmark national flag. 76% percentages of the senior high school students haven’t seen the Denmark national flag. To sum up, most of people haven’t seen the Denmark national flag.

As the chart illustrates, the senior high school students think the Denmark national flag belongs to Europe of south is 27%, thinking the Denmark national flag belongs to Europe of north is 73%. As the bar chart indicates, most of students know the Denmark national flag belongs to the Northern Europe.

As the chart shows, there are 30 percentages of the interviewees know the color of Denmark national flag, up to 70 percentages of the interviewees don’t know the color of Denmark national flag. Many people think they have seen the Denmark national flag, but they misunderstand what the Denmark national flag color is.

As can be inferred from the result, the highest percentage of know the picture of Denmark national flag is star. It is 48%. Compared with other kinds of the picture of national flag, star is the most choose. The cross is 30% percent and the sun is 22%. In fact, the picture of the Denmark national flag is cross. Most interviewees (76%) expressed that they have seen the Denmark National Flag; however, up to 48% of them misunderstood the picture of it as “star” instead of “cross”.

5. How did you feel the Denmark national flag？

From the chart we can conclude that, 68% percentages of the senior high school students feel the Denmark national flag is cold, 32% percentages of the senior high school students feel the Denmark national flag is warm. We can infer that most of students know the Denmark national flag feels cold.

IV. Conclusion

IV. 1. Result of Study

According to the results of this study, most participants had no positive attitude towards the Denmark national flag. In addition, we found that most of people know the Denmark national flag belonging to North Europe. And 70% interviewees didn't know the color of Denmark flag. Furthermore, people felt Denmark flag cold more than warm. Finally, most of people didn't know the meaning of Denmark national flag. Moreover, we found people even did not understand which country Denmark is.

IV. 2. Suggestion of Study

Therefore, we deeply consider that the international education is need in hurry in Taiwan. Even if we seldom have a chance to visit Europe where is quite far away from Taiwan. The knowledge of the global information is necessary for every world citizens. From this result of the study, we suggest for the further study to discuss the general study of all countries in Scandinavia, comparing the similarities and differences among them.
