The Distributor February 2015 Director’s Chair February 2015 Our Awards Banquet was a nice outing this year handled by Vince and Karen Scalabrino and Larry and Nadeen Rust. Yearly awards for attendance, mileage, and positions held by members were given. Also, our yearly award for Mr. and Mrs. Model A was presented to Mark and Val Maron and Most Active member to Christine Rozny. Mike Kochevar records attendance for all events and helps to make the awarding of these special awards. Thank you to the entire membership for assisting me in 2014. The club is always trying to find new and fun events. This year we are trying to put together a group of cars for the World of Wheels Car Show in Rosemont on March 13-15. Assembling a small variety of our club member’s cars we hope to highlight our hobby from a restorer’s perspective. It will also be good publicity for the Illinois Region. Please contact Ken Ehrenhofer, Jim Stockinger, or Andy Stockinger if you might be interested. I am currently reading “Wheels for the World, Henry Ford, his company and a Century of Progress” written by Douglas Brinkley. It gives a history of Ford Motor Company from the buzzing at the turn of the century up to now. Obviously the chapters dealing with the Model A are the most interesting. A lengthy detail of the Model T history brings the reader up to 1926-1927 showing that competition from Chevrolet and even Plymouth really forced a stubborn Henry Ford to introduce a “new” car in late 1927. In May 1927 three big newspaper headlines read, “Henry and Edsel Ford drive the Fifteenth millionth Ford Model T out of the factory, Charles Lindbergh solos across the Atlantic, and Henry Ford announces he would discontinue the Model T.” Four wheel brakes, a gear shifting transmission, hydraulic shock absorbers, shatterproof safety glass, nine body styles and double the horsepower of the previous T engine were some of the many innovations the Model A came with. Sales took off despite the looming Depression. However one other new item that we seldom hear about but I believe was also a big contributor to the popularity of the Model A… installment financing by Ford for the buyers. Awards Banquet 2014 (The Great Escape): Illinois Region Upcoming Events: Her Cover Photo – Bob Friskics Bob has been buying and selling Model A parts and other antiques since the '70's. He joined our club in 1989 with encouragement from Vince Scallabrino and Mike Podgorkski soon after ac- quiring his first AA truck to get some more information on the large trucks. Since then he has acquired enough original parts for two AA's and a pickup truck. Bob is a carpenter by trade and raised his garage door to 7' in order to accommodate his truck. The flatbed in the pictures was purchased for parts from Lou Stratka in 2004; it is the only run- ning Model A Bob owns and is believed to be a whiskey-hauling truck from Canada to Chicago in the '30's. The bullet hole in the windshield is reported to be from one of the bootleg runs; the driver ducked; no blood on the seat. Bob's working on the front axle; the engine and trans are rebuilt. Finding information on AA Trucks was hard at first. He would look at pictures of trucks with a magnifying glass and com- pare subtle differences. Most people in the club knew their Model A car parts but not the Big Iron parts, then Ken Keely sold Bob an original Parts Price List dating June 1, 1929. The price list has pictures of AA Truck parts and is very helpful. In 2007 Bob joined The Ford Model AA Truck Club, a lot more information is available on AA Trucks.
