Thalyta Swanepoel iii Opsomming Hierdie verhandeling bespreek die aanbieding van politiek as nuusonderwerp in die Suid-Afrikaanse vrouetydskrifte Fair Lady, rooi rose en SARIE in geselekteerde jare van demokratisering vanaf 1994 tot 2004. Die sentrale aanname in die studie is dat die media in 'n demokrasie, veral waar vroue se politieke kennisvlakke laer is as die van mans, die pertinente funksie het om die samelewing in te lig en op te voed om effektief in die bestel te funksioneer. Vanwee die feit dat vrouetydskrifte gewilde leesstof is onder vroue is dit uniek geposisioneer om politieke inligting aan hulle te verskaf, hoewel dit tradisioneel nie hierdie rol vervul het nie. Die aanbeveling is dat die uitgangspunte van die aanlynevalueringsmodel, skemateorie en agendastellingsteorie in inligtingseleksie en -aanbieding in ag geneem moet word om politieke kennisvlakke by die vrou te verhoog. Volgens eersgenoemde leer die meeste mense op toevallige wyse van politiek omdat hulle nie aktief na die inligting soek nie. Volgens die skemateorie word al die inligting oor'n bepaalde onderwerp saamgegroepeer en be"lnvloed hierdie kennisstrukture hoe mense nuwe inligting opneem, verwerk en hoe reaksies na aanleiding daarvan gevorm word. Agendastelling se in wese dat die leser geneig is om 'n saak wat baie aandag in die media kry as belangriker te ag as een wat nie so baie aandag kry nie. Die aspekte wat uitgelig word, word ook as belangriker beskou. Teen die teoretiese agtergrond is riglyne opgestel vir die aanbieding van politiek in vrouetydskrifte. Die uitgangspunte is geverifieer teen artikels in Ms. Magazine, 'n publikasie wat reeds politiek op haar agenda het. Die riglyne het as basis gedien vir 'n kwalitatiewe inhoudsanalise van politieke nuusitems in Fair Lady, rooi rose en SARIE. Die resultate het getoon dat Fair Lady baie dekking van die onderwerp het, terwyl rooi rose en SARIE aansienlik minder het. Hoewel die tydskrifte reeds heelwat van die riglyne implementeer in hul dekking van politieke nuusitems, kan van die publikasies nog meer doelbewus 'n poging aanwend om die leser se aandag na politieke items te trek en dit beter te behou. Ten slotle word geargumenteer dat vrouetydskrifte aan die leser moet bied wat hulle wit he om ekonomiese voortbestaan te verseker, maar dat die sosiaal-verantwoordelike redaksielid van die riglyne wat in hierdie studie voorgestel word gebruik kan maak. Die publikasies kan sodoende hul funksies as mediums om lesers in te lig en op te voed vervul sonder om die [eser wat op soek is na vermaak te vervreem.     RESPONSE January 29, 2014 A Game-changer or a Damp Squib? Even before yesterday’s announcement that Dr Mamphela Ramphele is to be the Democratic Alliance’s ‘presidential candidate’, the 2014 election season had already thrown up a number of interesting developments: the final departure of Julius Malema from the ANC and his emergence as leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters; the fragmentation of COSATU, as seen in the decision of its biggest member-union not to support the ANC in the elections, and in the sidelining of its errant secretary-general, Zwelinzima Vavi; the booing of President Zuma during the memorial service for Madiba, and his subsequent absence from a number of the party’s provincial manifesto launches; the increasing prominence of Cyril Ramaphosa as the real face of the ANC’s campaign. Against such a background, how important is the fact that Dr Ramphele has now joined forces with the DA? At the levels of symbolism and principle, it is certainly groundbreaking; but when it comes to the practical essence of party politics – the attraction of votes – it is more likely a damp squib. Up to now, the DA has attracted very few credible African politicians with anything approaching a track record in the struggle. Some of its up-and-coming African members, such as Lindiwe Mazibuko and Mmusi Maimane, are evidently capable politicians who promise much for the future; but they were children when apartheid ended. Dr Ramphele’s struggle credentials are well known and extensive, all the more so, perhaps, in that she fought apartheid from outside the Congress movement.

They should be staying at home. If they did, we would have fewer social problems.” “I have a different question,” a young black woman journalist working for the same media house said. “Why should we have to prove that women make a difference for them to be equally represented in parliament? Men do not have to show that they make a difference!” These responses are among several divergent views encountered by Gender Links during on-site engagements with media houses, organised in collaboration with the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) in the run up to South Africa’s April 2004 elections. They illustrate both the progress that has been made, and the challenges in confronting the deeply-rooted attitudes towards gender in Southern African newsrooms. This report is an account of workshops conducted by GL and the Southern African Media Services Organisation (SAMSO) in seven Southern African countries that held or are expected to hold elections in 2004 and 2005 with the support of the Netherlands Institute of Southern Africa (NIZA). The countries, in order in which the workshops took place, are: South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Angola and Mauritius.     REPRESENTATION OF SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE PREPARED BY ADITI HUNMA, RESEARCH ASSISTANT 1 REPRESENTATION OF SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE METHODOLOGY The aim of this report is to explore how South African women are (re)presented by the media as they engage in the public sphere. It looks at women in three different fields namely, politics, business and art, analysing at the onset the way they argue, that is, as rhetorical agents. It ihen proceeds to assess how these women's gender is perceived to enhance or be detrimental to their capacity to deliver. In the process, the report comes to belie and confront various myths that still persist and taint women's image in the public arena. In the realm of politics, I will be analysing Cape Town Mayor and Head of DA, Helen Zille. In the corporate world, I will be looking at Bulelwa Qupe, who owns the Ezabantu, long-line Hake fishing company, and in the Arts, I will be looking at articles published on Nadine Gordimer, the author who bagged the Nobel Literature Prize less than two decades back. Data for this purpose was compiled from various websites, namely SABCNews.com, Mail and Guardian, News24, IOL and a few blog sites. It was then perused, sorted and labelled. Common topos were extracted and portions dealing with the (re)presentation of women were summarised prior to the actual write up. In the course of the research, I realised that the framing of events had a momentous bearing on the way the women came to be appear and so, I paid close attention to titles, captions and emboldened writings.
