A former psychiatrist has won France’s most prestigious literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, with her novel centred on the Spanish civil war. Lydie Salvayre’s book Pas Pleurer (Don’t Cry) saw off competition from, among others, the bestselling French author David Foenkinos, to win the coveted award. Salvayre, 66, whose parents were exiled republicans who fled Franco’s regime in Spain, grew up near the city of Toulouse in south-west France, speaking Spanish. She learned French after arriving at primary school. Her previous works have been translated into more than 20 languages and adapted for theatre productions. “I’m very happy and moved,” Salvayre told journalists after being named winner at the Drouant restaurant in Paris, where the annual award ceremony is traditionally held. -

Introduction to Manga for Librarians
PRESENTS AN INTRODUCTION TO MANGA FOR LIBRARIANS In cooperation with Hello, we’re We’re extremely excited to now have our entire digital book list available to libraries through OverDrive. Kodansha is one of the leading publishers in Japan, and one of the largest in the world. While we are a general publisher, we are also one of the major publishers of Japanese comics, or manga, with a long and distinguished history of releasing some the most popular titles in the world, including such classics as Sailor Moon, Akira, and most recently, Attack on Titan. This brief introduction covers manga titles available from our U.S.-based manga imprint, Kodansha Comics, which publishes selected manga from our broader Japanese list into the English-reading world. While the wide variety of genres (for all audiences) and long, complex storylines of manga can be bewildering for the uninitiated, we hope to break down some basic concepts here. In particular, we hope you take away from here a few key points about manga, and in particular digital manga, if you’re not familiar with them already: MANGA ARE THE KIND OF COMICS YOUNG WOMEN LIKE TO READ. Unlike most Western comics, manga is made for all categories, catering to all audiences, from young children to adults, girls and boys. In particular, manga has exposed the stereotype in North America that girls don’t like comics and are often the preferred type of comics young women like to read. MANGA SPEAKS TO TEENS. That said, teenagers are the core demographic of manga in the West. -

But Titan-Eren’s self-control is far from perfect, and when he goes on a rampage, not even Armin can stop him! With the survival of humanity on his massive shoulders, will Eren be able to return to his senses, or will he lose himself forever? The megahit Attack on Titan anime finally returns, streaming on April 1! We finally have the development of many of the supporting characters as well as the development of the training, but the flashback is at a strange point that is actually a bit confusing in terms of the narrative thrust. Levi being introduced is felt in a profound way. One thing that is really hit on though is that the characters are children and the armies are largely made of militarized teens in a way that doesnt even really make sense in the terms of the dystopia Hajime Isayama is developing. -

Desblache, 'Bernard Werber's Poetics Of
Desblache, ‘Bernard Werber’s Poetics of Ecological Reconstruction’ Page 1 / 17 L’Esprit Créateur 57.1 (2017) (4917) Werber’s Poetics of Ecological Reconstruction: “In Praise of Amnesia”? In 1995, Lawrence Buell proposed criteria for works of literature to be considered as eco- fiction. He lists the following as conditions for inclusion in the genre: 1. The nonhuman environment is present not merely as a framing device but as a presence that begins to suggest that human history is implicated in natural history. 2. The human interest is not understood to be the only legitimate interest. 3. Human accountability to the environment is part of the text’s ethical orientation. 4. Some sense of the environment as a process rather than a constant or a given is at least implicit in the text.1 Bernard Werber, one of France’s best-selling authors,2 undoubtedly qualifies as an author of eco-fiction, since most of his novels and short stories develop against the backdrop of mankind’s relationships with other species or, more generally, their environment. Another constant element in his stories is a near-future setting, which also qualifies him as an author of science fiction (SF). If, however, we follow Margaret Atwood’s classification,3 it seems more suitable to understand Werber’s work as speculative fiction rather than science fiction, since his plots are situated in an imaginable future, and are based on existing knowledge. In France, definitions of science fiction have tended to be broad, with the aim of putting this marginalized genre on a par with more canonical forms of writing. -
