We talk a lot about ‘Settle College Values’ because so many of our students are ambitious to do well and show off their talents in all kinds of ways. Settle College is a happy, friendly and safe environment to learn in where high standards of respect, courtesy and behaviour are expected. We have a fantastic range of extra curricular and enrichment activities. We also offer good homework facilities and access to computers so that all students can learn effectively. We expect students to work hard and encourage them not to be afraid of making mistakes which they can learn from. We very much see determination as a muscle to success, growth mindset is an area we champion. We will not tolerate bad behaviour that stops others from learning. Our tutors are there to provide support and guidance and will help you settle in. Please read this Information Pack carefully because the better you understand the school, the easier it will be to settle in to Settle College. Our school motto is ‘Be the best you can be’ and is central to all that we do. We hope that students will enjoy their time here and thrive in all that they do. Andrew Taylor Gareth Whitaker Executive Headteacher Head of School Learning to succeed at Settle College At Settle College, we seek to develop the best possible relationship with each of our students and their families. This section explains how we aim to assist you. Once you have read it, if you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact the person named below. Your main contact is ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… (Please fill in the name of the Form Tutor when known) For pastoral support you can contact Student Services in the Hub [email protected] The First Day at Settle College Term begins for Year 7 students on Wednesday 5th September 2018. We would like you to arrange for your son/daughter to be at Settle College by 8:40 am. They should assemble in the school hall; staff will be present to greet them. Students will already know which Tutor Group they are in and shouldn’t worry about this as they will almost certainly be with some of their friends. Remember that everyone else is new too and they will soon make many new friends. Most of the morning will be spent with the Form Tutor, who will supply a Student Planner, individual timetables, locker keys (please note that lockers will be available to be reserved on Transfer Evening) and other important information. The cashless catering system will be explained to students and passwords for access to the school network and printers will be given. Students will need to bring the following with them: A ball point pen, pencil and ruler, which will be needed every day. Year 7 students will have been issued with a total pencil case set to assist them settling into school. Unfortunately, these are not able to be replaced by the school. Money for cashless catering to buy break time refreshments and lunch from the dining room. Please ensure that students have cash on them on Wednesday, whilst electronic systems are programmed. Students entitled to free school meals will have their entitlement automatically added to the cashless catering system. Sandwiches can be brought if a school lunch is not required. A bag in which to carry personal belongings. Only Year 7 and Year 12 students will be in school on the first day. This means that students will be able to familiarize themselves with the school routine and the building before the rest of the school return on Thursday 6th September 2018. The formal school day ends at 3:20 pm but many after school activities take place most days. Students should make sure they join in with at least one of these. If a student is unable to attend the first day of term, it is vital that a parent or carer contacts the school. This may be done by letter or by telephone. The Planner On the first day of term, all students will receive their Planner. They will begin to use it from that day and must bring it every day. This will help them to organize themselves and make the most of the opportunities offered. This shall be used for: Home learning; Successes, especially stamps and house points; Achievements, eg test results; Behaviour concerns; Targets set; Progress, including self assessment; Details of classes and activities. A separate student journal will be provided to all new students which shall contain a lot of information about the school, uniform, expectations, parental agreements, holiday dates, staff lists, assessment information etc. The Planner is designed to improve communication between parents, carers and the school. It will inform you of any home learning, positive behaviour, concerns, targets and levels of progress. We firmly believe that school is a partnership between parents, students and teachers and therefore ask you to help us make the Planner an important aspect of this partnership by: Asking your son/daughter if you can see the Planner on a weekly basis, monitoring for house points or concerns and checking home learning set and work done in specific subjects. Signing the Planner each week on the week-to-view pages to indicate to the Form Tutor that you have seen what has been recorded for that week. Tutors will sign it each week. The Planner can also be used by you as a method of communication directly with subject teachers or the Form Tutor. There is space on the week-to-view diary pages for you to comment when you wish to do so. The Planner is the property of Settle College; it should be free from graffiti and have all pages intact. If the Planner is lost, the cost of a replacement will be charged to the £25.00 locker deposit. We have also formerly moved to Class Charts from 2018. This allows parents access to real time updates for rewards and sanctions from their teachers and the availability of homework setting on it. All students shall be given access to their own areas. Parents shall receive passwords in September following all data sheets being added to the system. Settle College Code of Conduct The Settle College Code of Conduct ensures high standards of respect, courtesy and behaviour which is expected of all members of the College community. Personal Equipment The following is a list of personal equipment needed by students for their lessons and for examinations: Essential A bag - large enough to carry books and files. Black pens Pencil Pencil sharpener Ruler Eraser Compass Protractor Calculator – preferably bought through College, so that all classes have the same equipment, which aids teaching. Glue stick Student planner – this is supplied by the College; however, students will be charged £5.00 for every replacement (this should be collected and paid for from the Finance Office). The planner should be kept neat and tidy; it should not be drawn on, otherwise a new planner will have to be purchased.
