The article’s author, the critic A. O. Scott, opened by arguing that while plenty of American writers are hyped, imitated, even admired, few have the privilege of claiming, as Carver did near the end of his life in his poem ‘Late Fragment’, that they are ‘beloved’.1 While at the height of his career in the 1980s, the article argues, Carver’s minimalist publications were influential, since his death, he has become an ‘international icon of traditional American literary values’. Which is to say, ‘His genius – but more his honesty, his decency, his com- mitment to the exigencies of craft – is praised by an extraordinary diverse cross section of his peers.’2 As Scott’s generous retrospective suggests, for a writer who only published four major story collections during his lifetime, Carver’s cultural impact is remarkably exponential.3 While he was alive, Carver’s influence on the American short story was widely noted, but not so generally known is that since his death Carver’s work has continued to have an impact on a number of significant contempo- rary writers and artists. The list of those who attest to his influence is as diverse as those studied in the forthcoming expository chapters – Jay McInerney, Haruki Murakami, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Chuck Kinder and Willy Vlautin – as well as others like the filmmakers Robert Altman, Ray Lawrence, Dan Rush and Andrew Kotatko, the writers Salman Rushdie, Stuart Evers and Denis Johnson, the 2 / The Literary Afterlife of Raymond Carver musician Paul Kelly and the photographer Bob Adelman. The admiration of such a multivalent list suggests that Carver’s writing, despite its working- class subject matter and its particular Pacific Northwest setting, is not bound by its immediate geographic or cultural context. This book argues that the fundamental reason for Carver’s extensive afterlife is that there is a tight and intricate rela- tionship between his texts and his perceived lifestyle and writing practice; that underlying these ideas is the perception that Carver broadly represents a return to what might be best understood as a more ‘real’ form of literature – what Scott calls ‘traditional American literary values’ – one that is, Carver’s advocates would argue, more authentic than other kinds of recent writing. Given the aesthetic and formal differences between Carver’s writing and those who claim to have been influenced by him, this book argues that Carver’s literary afterlife is best viewed as being a social phenomenon, one born out of the social relations, histori- cal circumstances and economic forms that were produced by the shifting paradigms of US capitalism during Carver’s lifetime. While he may have struggled to make productive sense of this period, and while Carver may not have directly identified the tenets of the early neoliberal era in which he lived, they affected his life in pointed and particular ways. This book argues that his experience, which is communicated in his writing, becomes a model of how to negotiate, for better or worse, the complex and shifting founda- tions of this significant socio-economic transition. What’s more, while Carver experienced these events at a local level, the expansion of neoliberalism – or similar forms of free market capitalism – throughout the world in the last forty years has meant that his experience, his writing and his influence has a particularly global resonance. Read within this socio- historic context, this book argues that Carver’s realist authenticity embodies a model of retreat from the bewildering world of late capitalism, and becomes a coping mech- anism, or a form of consolation, that offers other writers and artists living in similar circumstances a way of navigating a world which seems to exceed the frame of conceptual mapping. In this sense, much of Carver’s early work inhabits a zone that explores the differ- ences between the hegemonic narratives of late capitalism – that is, Introduction / 3 the conventional American dream of equal opportunity, individual freedom and upward socio- economic mobility for all who work hard enough – and the reality of lived experience in this same period. This idea is complemented by Carver’s late fiction, which offers a muted oppositional alternative based on the residual values of craftsmanship, which, for those who are influenced by him, provides a distinctive site of resistance to the hegemonic norms of neoliberalism. The chapters that follow this introduction consider how this is the case in relation to a number of contemporary artists who claim to be influenced by Carver and who are also working within countries or cultures that have recently made, or are in the process of making, the transition to neoliberal capitalism. Thomas Edsall illustrates the substantial changes to the socio- economic conditions in America that occurred during Carver’s lifetime by recalling the defeat of the Republican presidential can- didate Barry Goldwater in the 1964 election.4 Defeated by Lyndon B. Johnson in the largest margin in US history, Goldwater’s cam- paign advocated major reductions in federal spending alongside sharp increases in military investment. Sixteen years later Ronald Reagan was elected president on a platform that bore an uncanny resemblance to Goldwater’s campaign.

And the responses come from first a very young, then a middle-aged, and eventually an older, concededly wiser writer. Alexander's title promises four themes, but develops only three. We have socialist, critic, Jew; we don't have the man, Irving Howe. In place of a thesis, Alexander offers strong opinions: praise of Howe for letting the critic in him eventually moderate the socialism and the secular Jewishness, but scorn for his remaining a socialist and for never becoming, albeit Jewish, a practicing Jew. If Howe could have responded at all, it would, of course, have been in a dissent. Yet he might have smiled at Alexander's attempts to come to tenns with one infuriating consistency: Howe's passion for whatever he thought and whatever he did, even when he was veering 180 degrees from a previous passion. Mostly, the book is a seriatim treatment of Howe's writings, from his fiery youthful Trotskyite pieces to his late conservative attacks on joyless literary theorists. Alexander summarizes each essay or book in order of appearance, compares its stance to that of its predecessors or successors, and judges them against an implicit set of unchanging values of his own, roughly identifiable to a reader as the later political and religious positions of Commentary magazine.

    American Communist History, Vol. 2, No. 2, 2003 Rethinking the Historiography of United States Communism: A Comment JOHN MCILROY Bryan Palmer’s critical commentary on the historiography of American Com- munism is eloquent and persuasive and I fully endorse the core components of his argument. Absent or insubstantial in many studies, both traditional and revisionist, a singular casualty of historical amnesia, Stalinism matters. A proper understanding of American Communism demands an account of its political refashioning from the mid-1920s.1 Moreover, Palmer’s important rehabilitation of the centrality of programmatic disjuncture opens up what a simplistic dissolution of Stalinism into a timeless, ahistorical official Commu- nism closes down: the existence of and the need to historicize different Commu- nisms, the reality of an “anti-Communism” of the left as well as of the right, the possibility of rediscovering yesterday and tomorrow a revolutionary interna- tionalism liberated from Stalinism which threatened not only capital but organized labor, working-class freedoms and any prospect of socialism. In this note I can touch tersely on only two points: the issue of continuity and rupture in the relationship between the Russians and the American Party in the 1920s and the question of how alternative Communisms handled the problem of international organization. Russian Domination and Political Rupture My emphasis on the continuity of Moscow control of US Communism is different from Palmer’s. What I find striking is the degree to which Russian domination of the Comintern and thus of the politics of its American section was sustained from 1920, even if the political content of that domination changed significantly as Stalinism developed.

    CHAPTER I1 THE BEHAVIORAL PROBLEM IN POLITICS There is a Gestalt problem in political theory, The problem is to juxta- pose the historical orientation of the traditionalists with the scientific meth- odology of the behavioralists. You take a black and white composition of the human face: behavioralists can only see patterns, models of political form. Traditionalists too often exclude systematic form or generalization and stress the content of politics. Behavioralists attempt to interpret Power without Myth. A typical example is Kamin's apparent inability to under- stand why a fictitious candidate named McIntyre defeats an equally fictitious Carter in the Maritimes.6 In one sense all political scientists are behavioralists -they all must study human behavior. Behavioralism in this sense has a tremendously phil- osophical and traditional heritage. There is, however, an unfortunate un- certainty as to whether all bel~avioralistsare aware of their ancestry. There seems to be much of what Eric Voegelin has termed "theoretical illiteracy" (possibly echoing Nicholas of Cusa's "learned ignorance") in the mass of recent behavioral literat~re.~ Behavioral science offers many faces to the student of politics. Some of the studies in content analysis, voting behavior, personality types, and game theory provide valuable insights into political power. These insights are really more or Iess traditional. This is especially true of David Butler's "psephological" analyses of the Britisl general elections and of V. 0. Key, Jr.'s inquiries into American politic^.^ The greatness of both Key and Butler lies in their ability to synthesize the bchavioral and traditional approaches. If Key was aware of the values of the statistical method, he also urged his students to use county and local histories as source materials.

    In Socialism’s Twilight: Michael Walzer and the Politics of the Long New Left David Marcus Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 ©2019 David Marcus All Rights Reserved Abstract “In Socialism’s Twilight: Michael Walzer and the Politics of the Long New Left” David Marcus In Socialism’s Twilight is a study of the thought and politics of Michael Walzer and the travails of “democratic socialism” in the second half of the twentieth century. Using the methods of intel- lectual and political history, it situates Walzer’s political theory and criticism in the context of what might be called the “long New Left,” the overlapping generations of radicals that stretched from the beginning of the Cold War to its end and that supplemented the left’s traditional com- mitments to socialism with a politics of national liberation, radical democracy, and liberalism. By doing so, the dissertation hopes to trace the development not only of Walzer’s own commit- ments but also those of the socialist left. Caught in a period of frequent defeat and bitter contro- versy, socialists found themselves forced into a state of constant revision, as they moved from the libertarian socialism of the 1950s and 60s to the social democratic coalitions of the 1970s and 80s to the liberalism and humanitarianism of the 1990s and 2000s. Opening with the collapse of the Popular Front after World War II, the study follows Walzer’s search for a new left with radi- cals around Dissent and through his involvement in civil rights and antiwar activism.

Palmer A Revived & Fractured International Historiography THE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL COMMUNISM has recently been reborn. New sources available from Russian archives and a post-1989 shift in the political cli- mate have changed both the empirical foundations of writing in the field as well as the varied and contested meanings of scholarly engagement.1 National peculiarities abound. In the United Kingdom, for instance, a war of position in communist historiog- raphy now divides established camps.
