Utica High School Mission Statement: The mission of Utica High School is to develop successful learners with the support of our community of educators, students, and parents. Our diverse student body will have an equitable, rigorous, and comprehensive education in a safe and supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation, and excellence in learning. We aim to cul- tivate individual learners with active and creative minds, and a sense of understanding and compassion for others. Index is available on page 3 From the Principal’s Desk Dear Chieftain Families, It seems impossible, but we’ve reached November already and the end of Quarter 1. We are just a few weeks from our Parent Teacher Conferences and the Thanksgiving Holiday. In between now and then we have an election and a lot of work to do! Though we will be here for staff professional development, school will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 8 for the General Election. Our conferences look a little different this year, with conferences being Tuesday, November 15 (4:30 - 7:30) and Thursday, No- vember 17 (12:00 – 3:00 and 4:30 – 7:30). Conferences will also be held in three locations, the Main Gym, the Cafeteria and the Media Center. Our Media Center will house our counseling department, Special Education teachers, and English as a Second Language teachers. All other teachers will be divided alphabetically between the Main Gym and the Cafeteria. This will allow us to avoid using the second story of the gym which was an access problem for some parents and grandparents that we would like to avoid. The break between the two dates is to facilitate an opportunity for parents to attend the district’s presentation of “What’s The Cost of Educating a Child?” at the Eisenhower High School Performing Arts Center on November 16 at 7pm. This presentation will give critical information regarding the state structure for funding school systems and how that uniquely and adversely impacts Utica Community Schools and Utica High School. The presentation will be from our Superintendent, Dr. Christine Johns, and our Assistant Superintendent for Business and Auxiliary Services, Stephanie Eagen. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers at the end of the presentation and an opportunity for you to get involved in advocating for our students and our schools. We are always grateful for that advocacy at Utica High School. As our Mission states, we believe that successful learners are made with the support of our community of educators, students, and parents. Our team at Utica High is doing more than ever to ensure that all students are getting the most from instruction and have the best chance to succeed. As parents, you should see that focus in learning in places where you might least expect it. Skills such as Claim, Evidence and Reasoning are not just taught in English classes, but are focused work of Science and Social Studies as well. Concerted effort is being made to evaluate student achievement gaps in SAT and PSAT data at Utica High School and against other schools in the district and state and develop plans for improvement. We recognize that the shift from ACT to SAT has been a challenge, but a challenge that will improve our in- struction. The SAT utilizes questions that get progressively more difficult, which require students to assess information within context, and require critical thinking. So, what did we find? We learned that our students mastered basic skills well! We learned that as the students took on questions with increasing complexity, that confidence changed. Our students did well. They beat state averages, but we know we can do better! That shift from a knowledge-based question to one of critical thinking was an opportunity for us to shift our ways of think- ing and learning. That shift toward increased critical thinking, to utilizing and analyzing information is a shift our team has com- mitted to at Utica High. It will not be without challenge, but will better prepare our students for the rigors of the post-secondary opportunities before them. Our mission also talks about the creative and the compassionate young thinkers we hope to develop at Utica High. Our students are young men and women, not just brains in a box. That commitment to learning is stimulated by the relationships they develop and the experiences they have. We saw the quality of those experiences when our Band hosted MSBOA Marching Band Festival and was rated Division 1, the highest ranking. If you didn’t get a chance to see that, another opportunity comes as our Award win- ning Theatre program presents Peter and Wendy, on Nov. 3 – 5 in the UHS Auditorium. Show tickets for the 7pm shows as well as Saturday’s matinee are available online at www.showtix4u.com and can be purchased now! On behalf of my administrative team, the office staff, and of course, our incredible teachers, I want to wish our entire community a very Happy Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Tom Lietz Principal 2 ELECTRONIC UTICA HIGH SCHOOL SOUNDING BOARD MEETINGS COMMUNICATION DEVICES All parents are welcome to attend our monthly Sounding Board District policy encourages staff and meetings to receive information regarding students to use digital information and student activities and educational communication technology to support programs offered at UHS.
