Pick a Bench Pick a Place MEDIA FACTSHEET PICK A BENCH, PICK A PLACE The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) launched the ‘Pick a bench Pick a place’ initiative on 27 February 2014, to invite the public to vote for their favourite bench designs and where they would like to see the benches installed around Singapore. These uniquely designed benches will be made from the wooden planks from the former National Stadium to commemorate this meaningful landmark. The voting ran from 27 February to 31 March 2014 and we received over 6,000 votes. The public can look forward to 42 benches at 15 locations islandwide by early 2015. Please refer to Annex A for the list of bench designs and locations chosen by the public. The benches will provide the community with interesting resting places and also serve as focal points for community interactions. Besides serving the community in a practical way, these benches will enhance and beautify our neighbourhoods while commemorating the former National Stadium in a meaningful manner. The public was invited to choose from 24 bench designs and 24 public spaces. The 24 designs were created by our local designers, artists, architects and winners of the bench design competition held in 2012. Details of the benches and their locations are available here. PubliCity initiative This project is under the PubliCity initiative announced as part of the Draft Master Plan 2013 last November. PubliCity is an initiative that aims to involve the community to celebrate good public spaces and to enliven public spaces through good design and programmes. Public spaces are important components of our living environment. The creation and development of well-designed public spaces provide areas for people to gather for social activities and serve as leisure and recreational spaces. As part of urban planning and design, public spaces are carefully planned and distributed across the island. PubliCity strives to create both new public spaces as well as rejuvenate existing ones. Lena Chan is the Director of the National Biodiversity Centre (NBC), NParks, where she leads a team of 30 officers who are responsible for a diverse range of expertise relevant to biodiversity conservation.

    Biodiversity: Nature Conservation in the Greening of Singapore - In a small city-state where land is considered a scarce resource, the tension between urban development and biodiversity conservation, which often involves protecting areas of forest from being cleared for development, has always been present. In the years immediately after independence, the Singapore government was more focused on bread-and-butter issues. Biodiversity conservation was generally not high on its list of priorities. More recently, however, the issue of biodiversity conservation has become more prominent in Singapore, both for the government and its citizens. This has predominantly been influenced by regional and international events and trends which have increasingly emphasised the need for countries to show that they are being responsible global citizens in the area of environmental protection. This study documents the evolution of Singapore’s biodiversity conservation efforts and the on-going paradigm shifts in biodiversity conservation as Singapore moves from a Garden City to a City in a Garden. The Singapore Urban Systems Studies Booklet Series draws on original Urban Systems Studies research by the Centre for Liveable Cities, Singapore (CLC) into Singapore’s development over the last half-century. The series is organised around domains such as water, transport, housing, planning, industry and the environment. Developed in close collaboration with relevant government agencies and drawing on exclusive interviews with pioneer leaders, these practitioner-centric booklets present a succinct overview and key principles of Singapore’s development model. Important events, policies, institutions, and laws are also summarised in concise annexes. The booklets are used as course material in CLC’s Leaders in Urban Governance Programme.

It runs along Alexandra Road from Depot Road to Telok Blangah Road, through the Berlayer Creek mangrove area and skirts the foothills of Bukit Chermin. Visitors can now enter mangrove and coastal areas which were previously inaccessible to pedestrians. These tranquil nature spots not only contain 40% of the endangered and vulnerable plant species in Singapore; they are also an oasis of calm for visitors amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
