THESIS INTRODUCTION The picture of themselves which the Victorians have handed down to us is of a people who valued morality and respectability, and, perhaps, valued the appearance of it as much as the reality. Perhaps the pursuit of the latter furthered the achievement of the former. They also valued the technological achievements and the revolution in mobility that they witnessed and substantially brought about. Not least did they value the imperial power, formal and informal, that they came to wield over vast tracts of the globe. The intention of the following study is to take these three broad themes which, in the national consciousness, are synonymous with the Victorian age, and examine their applicability to the contemporary theatre, its practitioners, and its audiences. Any capacity to undertake such an investigation rests on the reading for a Bachelor’s degree in History at Warwick, obtained when the University was still abuilding, and an innate if undisciplined attachment to things theatrical, fostered by an elder brother and sister. Such an attachment, to those who share it, will require no elaboration. My special interest will lie in observing how a given theme operated at a particular or local level.

  • Film, Television and Video Productions Featuring Brass Bands
Film, Television and Video productions featuring brass bands Gavin Holman, October 2019 Over the years the brass bands in the UK, and elsewhere, have appeared numerous times on screen, whether in feature films or on television programmes. In most cases they are small appearances fulfilling the role of a “local” band in the background or supporting a musical event in the plot of the drama. At other times band have a more central role in the production, featuring in a documentary or being a major part of the activity (e.g. Brassed Off, or the few situation comedies with bands as their main topic). Bands have been used to provide music in various long-running television programmes, an example is the 40 or more appearances of Chalk Farm Salvation Army Band on the Christmas Blue Peter shows on BBC1. Bands have taken part in game shows, provided the backdrop for and focus of various commercial advertisements, played bands of the past in historical dramas, and more. This listing of 450 entries is a second attempt to document these appearances on the large and small screen – an original list had been part of the original Brass Band Bibliography in the IBEW, but was dropped in the early 2000s. Some overseas bands are included. Where the details of the broadcast can be determined (or remembered) these have been listed, but in some cases all that is known is that a particular band appeared on a certain show at some point in time - a little vague to say the least, but I hope that we can add detail in future as more information comes to light.

Many of our provincial theatres have been lost in the last fifty years. Ron Hasker has provided a short history of the theatre and its construction and has chronicled its rebirth under the management of a local Trust. The restoration has retained most of the original features.

  • City Branding: Part 2: Observation Towers Worldwide Architectural Icons Make Cities Famous
City Branding: Part 2: Observation Towers Worldwide Architectural Icons Make Cities Famous What’s Your City’s Claim to Fame? By Jeff Coy, ISHC Paris was the world’s most-visited city in 2010 with 15.1 million international arrivals, according to the World Tourism Organization, followed by London and New York City. What’s Paris got that your city hasn’t got? Is it the nickname the City of Love? Is it the slogan Liberty Started Here or the idea that Life is an Art with images of famous artists like Monet, Modigliani, Dali, da Vinci, Picasso, Braque and Klee? Is it the Cole Porter song, I Love Paris, sung by Frank Sinatra? Is it the movie American in Paris? Is it the fact that Paris has numerous architectural icons that sum up the city’s identity and image --- the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, Notre Dame Cathedral, Moulin Rouge and Palace of Versailles? Do cities need icons, songs, slogans and nicknames to become famous? Or do famous cities simply attract more attention from architects, artists, wordsmiths and ad agencies? Certainly, having an architectural icon, such as the Eiffel Tower, built in 1889, put Paris on the world map. But all these other things were added to make the identity and image. As a result, international tourists spent $46.3 billion in France in 2010. What’s your city’s claim to fame? Does it have an architectural icon? World’s Most Famous City Icons Beyond nicknames, slogans and songs, some cities are fortunate to have an architectural icon that is immediately recognized by almost everyone worldwide.

  • YORKSHIRE EVENING POST 1890 to 1900
YORKSHIRE EVENING POST 1890 to 1900 1 3 December 1890 An inquest was held yesterday on the body of Sarah Jackson, 37, the wife of a canal boatman. Deceased had only arrived in Salford with her husband, when she went ashore with him. On returning to the flat some little time before him, the deceased, it is believed, missed her footing in the darkness and fell into the canal at Oldfield Road. Search was made for the body, which was found near the shore side. A verdict of “Found drowned” was returned. 2 26 December 1890 CHRISTMASTIDE IN LEEDS Of all the holidays in the year, Christmastide is perhaps looked forward to with the most interest, inasmuch as to many people it means their annual visit to the best and oldest friends they have got, and to a reuniting of old ties. Then, of all times in the year, is it that the family circle is met together, old differences are healed, and the occasion is made one of festivity. This Christmas has been no exception to the rule, in the latter respect, at any rate ; but, unfortunately, the weather has not been so auspicious as it might have been. In the early part of the week, it appeared probable that we should have a real old fashioned Christmas, with real frost and snow. A thaw, however, set in on Wednesday, and on Christmas Eve, the streets of the town were in A VERY DISAGREEABLE CONDITION rendering “sight seeing” and “shopping” less popular than they would have been. On the same night, and early on Christmas morning too, it is said that the principal streets from time to time were the scene of rowdyism of the most disgraceful kind.
