Emel’yanov Transactions of the All-Union Entomological Society Morphological principles of insect phylogeny The phylogenetic relationships of the principal groups of cicadine* insects have been considered on more than one occasion, commencing with Osborn (1895). Some phylogenetic schemes have been based only on data relating to contemporary cicadines, i.e. predominantly on comparative morphological data (Kirkaldy, 1910; Pruthi, 1925; Spooner, 1939; Kramer, 1950; Evans, 1963; Qadri, 1967; Hamilton, 1981; Savinov, 1984a), while others have been constructed with consideration given to paleontological material (Handlirsch, 1908; Tillyard, 1919; Shcherbakov, 1984). As the most primitive group of the cicadines have been considered either the Fulgoroidea (Kirkaldy, 1910; Evans, 1963), mainly because they possess a small clypeus, or the cicadas (Osborn, 1895; Savinov, 1984), mainly because they do not jump. In some schemes even the monophyletism of the cicadines has been denied (Handlirsch, 1908; Pruthi, 1925; Spooner, 1939; Hamilton, 1981), or more precisely in these schemes the Sternorrhyncha were entirely or partially depicted between the Fulgoroidea and the other cicadines. In such schemes in which the Fulgoroidea were accepted as an independent group, among the remaining cicadines the cicadas were depicted as branching out first (Kirkaldy, 1910; Hamilton, 1981; Savinov, 1984a), while the Cercopoidea and Cicadelloidea separated out last, and in the most widely acknowledged systematic scheme of Evans (1946b**) the last two superfamilies, as the Cicadellomorpha, were contrasted to the Cicadomorpha and the Fulgoromorpha. At the present time, however, the view affirming the equivalence of the four contemporary superfamilies and the absence of a closer relationship between the Cercopoidea and Cicadelloidea (Evans, 1963; Emel’yanov, 1977) is gaining ground. -

Vidano”, Facoltà di Agraria, Università di Torino, Italy Abstract Seasonal presence and host plants of Dictyophara europaea (L.), a candidate vector of phytoplasmas to grapevine, were studied in Piedmont during 2006 in different vine growing regions. Sampling consisted in net sweeping on different candidate host plants, and captures of adults with yellow sticky traps placed on grapevine. D. europaea nymphs and adults were collected on many weeds, showing how this planthopper should be considered a poly- phagous species, although Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Urtica dioica L. seem to be its preferred hosts, and may also bear phy- toplasmas. Larvae of Dryinidae were observed on almost 5% of collected individuals. The peak of adult presence was recorded in the middle of August, but few adults were captured on sticky traps placed on grapevine. Molecular analyses will be performed to detect the presence of phytoplasmas in captured individuals; however, given its scarce presence on grapevine, D. europaea does not seem capable to play a major role in the transmission of phytoplasmas to grapevine even if its vector ability were proved. Five species were collected by sweeping net on herbs. The collected specimens were identified as: Aphrophora salicina (Goeze, 1778), Lepyronia coleoptrata (Linnaeus, 1758), Paraphilaenus notatus (Mulsant & Rey, 1855), Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus, 1758) and Neophilaenus campestris (Fallén, 1805). The species P. spumarius and L. coleoptrata were the most abundant species and the others were rather rare. The species of family Aphrophoridae are xylem feeders so they are considered as candidates for transmitting bacteria Xylella fastidiosa. Therefore, the role of the identified species in the agricultural ecosystems in the collecting sites needs to be studied. The UK has a long history of phenological recording, particularly of first and last dates, but systematic national recording schemes are able to provide information on the distributions of events. The majority of data concern spring phenology, autumn phenology is relatively under-recorded. The UK is not usually water-limited in spring and therefore the major driver of the timing of life cycles (phenology) in the UK is temperature [H]. Phenological responses to temperature vary between species [H] but climate change remains the major driver of changed phenology [M]. For some species, other factors may also be important, such as soil biota, nutrients and daylength [M]. Wherever data is collected the majority of evidence suggests that spring events have advanced [H]. Thus, data show advances in the timing of bird spring migration [H], short distance migrants responding more than long-distance migrants [H], of egg laying in birds [H], in the flowering and leafing of plants[H] (although annual species may be more responsive than perennial species [L]), in the emergence dates of various invertebrates (butterflies [H], moths [M], aphids [H], dragonflies [M], hoverflies [L], carabid beetles [M]), in the migration [M] and breeding [M] of amphibians, in the fruiting of spring fungi [M], in freshwater fish migration [L] and spawning [L], in freshwater plankton [M], in the breeding activity among ruminant mammals [L] and the questing behaviour of ticks [L]. -

Αthena International Olive Oil Competition 26 ΧΑΛΚΙΝΑ- 28 March ΜΕΤΑΛΛΙΑ* 2018 OLIVE OIL PRODUCER DELPHIVARIETAL MAKE-UP• PHOCIS REGION COUNTRY WEBSITE ΜEDALS & SPECIAL PRIZES Final Participation and Awards Results For its third edition the Athena International Olive Oil Competition (ATHIOOC) showed a 22% increase in the num- ber of participating samples; 359 extra virgin olive oils from 12 countries were judged by a panel of 20 interna- tional experts from 11 countries. This is the first year that the number of samples from abroad overpassed those from Greece: of the 359 samples tasted, 171 were Greek (48%) and 188 (52%) from other countries. In conjunction with the high number of inter- national judges (2/3 of the tasting panel), this establishes Athena as one of the few truly international extra virgin olive oil competitions in the world ―and one of the fastest growing ones. ATHIOOC 2018 awarded 242 medals in the following categories: 13 Double Gold (scoring 95-100%), 100 Gold (scoring 85-95%), 89 Silver (scoring 75-85%) and 40 Bronze (scoring 65-75%). There were also several special prizes including «Best of Show» which this year goes to Palacio de los Olivos from Andalusia, Spain. There is also a notable increase in the number of cultivars present: 124 this year compared to 92 last year, testify- ing to the amazing diversity of the olive oil world. The awards ceremony will take place in Athens on Saturday, April 28 2018, 18:00, at the Zappeion Megaron Con- ference & Exhibitions Hall in the city center. This event will be preceded by a day-long, stand-up and self-pour tasting of all award-winning olive oils. -

Germinara3, Antonio De Cristofaro 1* & Emilio Guerrieri 2 The meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius, is a highly polyphagous widespread species, playing a major role in the transmission of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa subspecies pauca, the agent of the “Olive Quick Decline Syndrome”. Essential oils (EOs) are an important source of bio-active volatile compounds that could interfere with basic metabolic, biochemical, physiological, and behavioural functions of insects. Here, we report the electrophysiological and behavioural responses of adult P. spumarius towards some EOs and related plants. Electroantennographic tests demonstrated that the peripheral olfactory system of P. spumarius females and males perceives volatile organic compounds present in the EOs of Pelargonium graveolens, Cymbopogon nardus and Lavandula ofcinalis in a dose- dependent manner. In behavioral bioassays, evaluating the adult responses towards EOs and related plants, both at close (Y-tube) and long range (wind tunnel), males and females responded diferently to the same odorant. Using EOs, a clear attraction was noted only for males towards lavender EO. Conversely, plants elicited responses that varied upon the plant species, testing device and adult sex. Both lavender and geranium repelled females at any distance range. On the contrary, males were attracted by geranium and repelled by citronella. Finally, at close distance, lavender and citronella were repellent for females and males, respectively. Our results contribute to the development of innovative tools and approaches, alternative to the use of synthetic pesticides, for the sustainable control of P. -

A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

C. distincta adults, which live directly on P. ponderosa, are polymorphic for three distinct color forms. Mistletoe feeding in the nymphal stage may be an adaptation to the regional monsoon climate, permitting the spittlebugs to take advantage of high mistletoe transpiration and xylem flow rates during the early summer dry season, when transpiration in the host trees is curtailed. Zusammenfassung: Larven der Schaumzikade Clastoptera distincta Doering (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea: Clastopteridae) sind Xylemsaft-Hyperparasiten an der Mistelart Arceuthobium vaginatum subsp. cryptopodum, einem Parasiten an Pinus ponderosa im Südwesten der Vereinigten Staaten. Die Adulten von C. distincta, die direct an P. ponderosa leben, sind polymorph bzgl. drei verschiedener Farbformen. Das Saugen an Misteln im Larvalstadium könnte eine Anpassung an das regionale Monsunklima sein, das es den Schaum- zikaden ermöglicht, von der hohen Transpirationrate und Xylemsaftflüssen während der Trockenphase im Frühsommer zu profitieren, wenn die Transpiration in der eigentlichen Nahrungspflanze eingeschränkt ist.
