Interviews by Stephen Moss Friday February 23, 2007 Guardian Andrew Motion Poet laureate Choosing the greatest living writer is a harmless parlour game, but it might prove more than that if it provokes people into reading whoever gets the call. What makes a great writer? Philosophical depth, quality of writing, range, ability to move between registers, and the power to influence other writers and the age in which we live. Amis is a wonderful writer and incredibly influential. Whatever people feel about his work, they must surely be impressed by its ambition and concentration. But in terms of calling him a "great" writer, let's look again in 20 years. It would be invidious for me to choose one name, but Harold Pinter, VS Naipaul, Doris Lessing, Michael Longley, John Berger and Tom Stoppard would all be in the frame. AS Byatt Novelist Greatness lies in either (or both) saying something that nobody has said before, or saying it in a way that no one has said it. You need to be able to do something with the English language that no one else does. A great writer tells you something that appears to you to be new, but then you realise that you always knew it. Great writing should make you rethink the world, not reflect current reality. Amis writes wonderful sentences, but he writes too many wonderful sentences one after another. I met a taxi driver the other day who thought that. -

As nationalism and nativism rise across the globe, my cyber world is under siege. I am not complaining. Powerful images posted online from art biennials have stayed with me: Venice, Berlin, Dak’Art (Dakar, Senegal) and Art X in Lagos, Nigeria. Memorable, startling art, love- infused, aiming to transform the way I, we, see all kinds of difference: gender, race, culture and ability. Rarely can art claim immediate transformative power; what it can do is capture the imagination and plant seeds for a conversation and perhaps – ultimately – a conversion. Ettensohn, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2014. This project evaluates the twinned discourses of globalism and humanitarianism through an analysis of the body in the postcolonial novel. In offering celebratory accounts of the promises of globalization, recent movements in critical theory have privileged the cosmopolitan, transnational, and global over the postcolonial. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of globalism, these theorists have often turned to transnational fiction as supplying a corrective dose of humanitarian sentiment that guards a global affective community against the potential exploitations and excesses of neoliberalism. While authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Nuruddin Farah, and Rohinton Mistry have been read in a transnational, cosmopolitan framework––which they have often courted and constructed––I argue that their theorizations of the body contain a critical, postcolonial rejoinder to the liberal humanist tradition that they seek to critique from within. -

VS. Naipaul: A Bibliographical Update (198 7-94) KELVIN JARVIS JLHIS IS A bibliographical update of my V. S. Naipaul: A Selective Bibliography with Annotations: 195J-198J, covering the period 1987-94. Since 1 g87 (when An Enigma of Arrival: A Novel in Five Sections appeared), Naipaul has published three books—A Turn in the South ( 1989), India: A Million Mutinies Now ( 1990), and A Way in the World ( 1994)—and more than 18 substantial pieces, in addition to delivering various lectures and acceptance speeches. This checklist is arranged in six parts. Part I contains Naipaul's most recent writings and comments, listed under three head• ings: published books, articles, and interviews, with entries given chronologically. Part II covers recent bibliographical listings of his work. Part III includes 16 full-length books written about him. Part PV lists articles on him in books, reference volumes, journals, and magazines. Part V has book reviews and critical studies of his individual books. And Part VI itemizes doctoral theses exclu• sively or partly on him. Conference papers have featured prominently in the spate of attention Naipaul continues to generate; these papers are usu• ally quite elusive to trace, particularly if they are not published collectively and within a reasonably short time frame. Thus this checklist omits offerings on Naipaul from conferences and all foreign-language citations. It also excludes newspaper articles with imprints prior to 1987. The Enigma of Arrival spans Naipaul's life in England and echoes a finality in his writing career. The protagonist of this novel writes: "with time passing, I felt mocked by what I had already done; it seemed to belong to a time of vigour, now past for good. -

Eulogy: Remembering "Norris Buzz Johnson" November 2 1951 to February 11, 2014 Memorial Service Saturday March 1st. 2014 at 1 pm All Saint's Church Haggerston Road Hackney London E8 4EP I recall Buzz gave me a birthday gift many years ago and it was a book entitled “Return to the Source” written by the late Amilcar Cabral. My words today will be in the form of a journey where I briefly return to the source of our brother’s foundations in Tobago and then Trinidad and the journey here to the UK and his growth and development and he will be making his final journey when the body returns to Tobago. Return to the Source: Norris Chrisleventon Johnson was the first and only son of Mrs Adwina Johnson nee Phillips and the late Cornelius Arthur Johnson. He was born in the fishing village of Buccoo in Tobago on November 2 1951. The family migrated to Fyzabad in South Trinidad, one of the villages that housed many workers from the oilfields in Point Fortin and its environs. His father Cornelius was on oilfield worker and was obviously influenced and inspired by a key political and labour activist and leader, Tubal Uriah Buzz Butler. He therefore called his son Buzz. That name has stuck with him ever since. The Fyzabad area was the main bastion of the Butlerite movement. Tubal Uriah Buzz Butler was a fierce defender of workers’ rights and earned his place in Trinidad and Tobago's history for his role during the turbulent days of June 1937. This was the period of the labour riots and the development of the trade union movement in Trinidad & Tobago and in particular of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union. -

G. Sebald, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan Elizabeth Andrews McArthur This dissertation analyzes how twentieth- and early twenty-first- century novelists respond to the English landscape through their presentation of narrative and their experiments with novelistic form. Opening with a discussion of the English planning movement, “Narrative Topography” reveals how shifting perceptions of the structure of English space affect the content and form of the contemporary novel. The first chapter investigates literary responses to the English landscape between the World Wars, a period characterized by rapid suburban growth. It reveals how Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts, reconsiders which narrative choices might be appropriate for mobilizing and critiquing arguments about the relationship between city, country, and suburb. The following chapters focus on responses to the English landscape during the present era. The second chapter argues that W. G. Sebald, in The Rings of Saturn, constructs rural Norfolk and Suffolk as containing landscapes of horror—spaces riddled with sinkholes that lead his narrator to think about near and distant acts of violence. As Sebald intimates that this forms a porous “landscape” in its own right, he draws attention to the fallibility of representation and the erosion of cultural memory. -

Introduction to Victorian and Twentieth-Century Literature Heesok Chang Unlike the preceding three volumes in this Companion to British Literature – the Medieval, Early Modern, and Long Eighteenth Century – the current one attempts to cover at least two distinct periods: the Victorian and the Twentieth Century. To make matters more difficult, the second of these hardly counts as a single period; it is less an epoch than a placeholder. In terms of periodization, the Victorian era is succeeded – or some might say, overthrown – by the Modern. But modernism is not capacious enough to encompass the various kinds of literary art that emerged in Britain following World War II, the postmodern and the postcolonial, for example. We could follow the lead of recent scholars and expand the modernist period beyond the “high” to include the “late” and arguably the “post” as well. But this conceptual as well as temporal expansion does not take in the vital British literature written from the 1970s onward, an historical era distinct from the “postwar” that critics refer to, for now, as the “contemporary” (see English 2006). Of course, all periods are designated after they have finished, including the Victo- rian, which was very much a modernist creation. Yet it is unlikely we will come to call the period stretching from the middle of the last century to the early decades of the new millennium, from the breakup of Britain’s empire to the devolution of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, “Elizabethan.” And this despite the Victo- rian longevity of the Windsor monarch’s reign. The queen is one and the same, but the national culture is anything but. -

This Issue Is Dedicated to the Memory of John La Rose, Founder of New Beacon Books
EnterText 6.3 Dedication and Introduction This issue is dedicated to the memory of John La Rose, founder of New Beacon Books, London. He lived to see the fortieth anniversary, in 2006, of the publishing house—or maisonette, as he sometimes called it, wryly—bookshop and cultural centre he had established. Having come to London from Trinidad in the early 1960s, he always had the intention to start a bookshop in the British capital because he understood how important ideas are if we are to act on our dreams of changing the world. And it was this phrase, so often on his lips, which Horace Ove chose as the title for his feature film about John La Rose’s life, Dream to Change the World (2005). In the intervening decades since its foundation, New Beacon’s impact on the cultural map of Britain, the Caribbean and the wider world has acquired real significance, not least as a bright beacon of what a few individuals can achieve with intelligence, passion and dedication (not money, which nowadays tends to be seen as the only prerequisite). New Beacon was named after the Beacon political movement of 1930s Trinidad, which was associated with the slogan “Agitate! Educate! Federate!” While these words have a particular resonance in Trinidad, of course, they also echo round the wider Anglophone Caribbean, where the West Indies Federation, which had promised a realisation of the dreams of John’s generation, lasted so few years, from 1958 to 1962. And they remain resonant on the global stage, reminding us, as they do, of the need to Paula Burnett: Dedication and Introduction 3 EnterText 6.3 rouse ordinary people’s awareness and feelings, to deepen dialogue and understanding, and to co-operate with one another if our puny individualities are to be able to exert real influence.
