The collaborative effort is focused upon the development of an archival collecting model for the field of biotechnology to acquire original papers, manuscripts and records from selected individuals, organizations and corporations as well as coordinating with the effort to capture oral history interviews with many biotechnology pioneers. This project combines the strengths of the existing UCSF Biotechnology Archives and the UCB Program in the History of the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology and will contribute to an overall picture of the growth and impact of biotechnology in the Bay Area. -

When an extracellular ligand binds to the receptor, a conformational change occurs that is transmitted to the intracellularly bound G- protein trimer. G-proteins regulate many cellular functions including metabolic enzymes, ion channels, and transporters. Due to their central role in physiological responses, GPCRs constitute ~30% of all prescription drug targets. Determining the structure of these important receptors in complex with their coupled G-protein will help to understand how they regulate cellular signals, as well as help to create new therapeutics for the treatment of several diseases. Despite the fact that several crystal structures of G-proteins and GPCRs have been solved independently [2], and the structure of these proteins together in a complex has defied researchers for the last 50 years [3]. In collaboration with the lab of Brian Kobilka we are trying to resolve the architecture of a GPCR-G- protein complex with the application of single-particle EM. The β2-adrenergic receptor Gs complex (β2AR-Gs) is approximately 140 kDa, consisting of the transmembrane receptor and the G-protein heterotrimer of Gsα and βγ. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 18, 2016 AN OPEN LETTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE The coming Presidential election will have profound consequences for the future of our country and the world. To preserve our freedoms, protect our constitutional government, safeguard our national security, and ensure that all members of our nation will be able to work together for a better future, it is imperative that Hillary Clinton be elected as the next President of the United States. Some of the most pressing problems that the new President will face — the devastating effects of debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, the need for alternative sources of energy, and climate change and its consequences — require vigorous support for science and technology and the assurance that scientific knowledge will inform public policy. Such support is essential to this country’s economic future, its health, its security, and its prestige. Strong advocacy for science agencies, initiatives to promote innovation, and sensible immigration and education policies are crucial to the continued preeminence of the U.S. scientific work force. We need a President who will support and advance policies that will enable science and technology to flourish in our country and to provide the basis of important policy decisions. For these reasons and others, we, as U.S. Nobel Laureates concerned about the future of our nation, strongly and fully support Hillary Clinton to be the President of the United States. Kobilka Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology, Stanford University School of Medicine Abstract G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are remarkably versatile signaling molecules. The members of this large family of membrane proteins are activated by a spectrum of structurally diverse ligands, and have been shown to modulate the activity of different signaling pathways in a ligand specific manner. In this manuscript I will review what is known about the structure and mechanism of activation of GPCRs focusing primarily on two model systems, rhodopsin and the β2 adrenoceptor. Keywords GPCR; 7TM; structure; conformational changes; efficacy INTRODUCTION G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent the largest family of membrane proteins in the human genome and the richest source of targets for the pharmaceutical industry. There has been remarkable progress in the field of GPCR biology during the past two decades. Notable milestones include the cloning of the first GPCR genes, and the sequencing of the human genome revealing the size of the GPCR family and the number of orphan GPCRs. Moreover, there is a growing appreciation that GPCR regulation and signaling is much more complex than originally envisioned, and includes signalling through G protein independent pathways [2–4]. Consequently, it has been proposed that the term GPCR be abandoned in favor of 7 transmembrane or 7TM receptors. -
