BERKELEY GARDENING CLUB ‘IN BLOOM’ GROUP UPDATE The In Bloom Group volunteers have now finalised their current projects for this year’s It’s Your Neighbourhood Campaign with the creation of the Library Garden area. A varied selection of annuals, herbs, vegetables and perennials partly donated by the volunteers and purchased by the Library have transformed the front of the Library and a donated rowing boat has been cleaned up and used as an unusual focal point for the planting scheme. Regular watering was necessary to ensure that the plants stayed in top condition during the hot weather we had recently. The RHS has sent their assessor to inspect our achievements over the past few months and we have been invited to Birmingham awards ceremony in September to hopefully receive an award for all our hard work!

The skirmish came back after last year’s cancellation with a bang, Oh what a skirmish! a canon, and some archers! Culminating in an incredible and realistic battle the whole weekend was a piece of renaissance wonder. Aside from all the wonderful stalls with wood carvings, medieval clothing and leather works, the actors and actresses made this a show to remember. You only had to wait for a moment and suddenly there was a16th century dance routine taking place. Wait a moment longer and there was a sword fight, Gruesome….and wonderfully realistic. But the true scandal was the joust. Who could have foreseen that the winner, the “mysterious Knight” would remove their helmet in victory to reveal that he, was indeed a wench, I mean, a woman! The flyer can reveal that the king was shocked!

This Sudoku variant is called "Tripledoku". It contains three 9×9 grids. The numbers 1 to 9 must be placed correctly for all of the three grids.

Mathdoku - also known as "CalcuDoku" or "Square Wisdom" - is a logical math puzzle. The objective of Mathdoku is to fill the grid with the numbers 1 to 9 (or whatever the grid dimension is) such that each row and each column contains only one instance of each number. In addition, each outlined group of cells contains digits which achieve a specified result using the specified mathematical operation (+, -, ×, ÷). Unlike Killer Sudoku, numbers can repeat within a group of cells.

September 2013 THE BERKELEY FLYER [email protected] SERVICE ACKNOWLEGED AFTER 70 YEARS Growing up in the 1930’s, young men were destined to be called for service in the armed forces when the second world war broke out. Aware of this, Godfrey Dimery decided that he wanted to join the Royal Navy. Hoping to get his choice, he volunteered in January 1942 before being called up. He was accepted by the senior service and reported to Devonport for training aged 19.

After passing out Godfrey was posted to join the crew of H.M.S. Bermuda. The ship was sent to the Mediterranean joining the North African campaign off Algiers. In 1943 Bermuda was sent to the North Atlantic based at Scapa Flow. From there it took part in protecting the Russian convoys in the Arctic. Another duty, together with two destroyers, was to take troops to Spitsbergen.

Now the Arctic Star medal has been issued for those who had served in Arctic waters and Godfrey has received the award for the action of 70 years ago.

September 2013 THE BERKELEY FLYER [email protected] Well I’m sorry I missed you folks again last month. A lightning whistle TASTY MORSELS stop visit to Berkeley for forty eight hours and off I was again. From Recipes from a far flung land.... the summer vistas of the French Alps to lower heights. Sea level in fact. Beachside. By Dan Ashford I find myself on the Island of Vassiliki in Greece. It’s so ‘rustic’ here it is sometimes hard to believe we are in Europe what with hand washing all our clothes and not being able to flush loo roll down the toilet. However, it’s a beautiful place to be and a mecca for windsurfers to boot……. but a bit of a hot place to work in a kitchen. Again, I find myself wishing I’d listened more at school. Why is this month’s offering not a Greek classic I hear you ask. Well with good reason. This is a dish a very good family friend used to love. In fact it was always a great pleasure to cook for her. She loved my food which always made me very proud. We loved talking food. So here is one of our favourites. To cook and to eat. It’s simple, tasty and full of summer flavours. Looks sexy on a plate too. Let’s prepare and cook….. BAKED HAKE with SPICED PEPPERS and SWEET BASIL YOU WILL NEED: 1 medium sized Hake fillet per person, 6oz to 8oz will be ample. 1 red onion. Dice it up. 1 red pepper, 1 green pepper and 1 yellow pepper. Rough cut’em, de-seed and set them aside. 1 bunch fresh sweet basil. Pick the leaves and discard the stalks. 1 clove of garlic. Crush it like you just don’t care. A few pinches of paprika. 2 lemons. Juicy. A tin of chopped tomatoes. Enough new potatoes for about 6 each. METHOD: OK, let’s go. First job is to prep our fish. You might find it already skinned and pin boned from the supermarket or better still ask your local fishmonger to do it for you… All part of the service eh! Or you can do it the old fashioned…. D.I.Y. Run your fingers down the flesh side of the fish feeling where any sharp little pin bones might be, then with a pair of chef tweezers or your fingers pluck the bones out one by one. A laborious job but a very important one. Fish bones are sharp and don’t taste very nice. Then with a sharp fillet knife carefully cut the skin away from the fillet. Do this by keeping the fillet skin side down on your fishy chopping board, hold down with the flat of your left hand and cut the skin off with the knife in your right (if you are right handed of course). This is not an exact science, so, if you have a more comfortable efficient way of doing it then go for it. One Chef buddy of mine puts his skin-on fillets in the freezer for fifteen minutes then just simply tears it off, snazzy! Apologies, I digress…… Hake. Prepped and ready to go. Well it’s not going anywhere but the oven, but for now, pop it in the fridge until later. Next up is the medley of peppers. In a pan add a little olive oil and heat to a medium temperature, pop in our crushed garlic and diced onion and sweat them off. Add a pinch of salt, white pepper and sugar for good measure. Why? Because we can. This will intensify the flavours, open the window and let the wonderful aromas of your kitchen turn the neighbours green with envy. Add the peppers to the mix and as they continue to soften add a splash of white wine. Reduce a bit then put a few decent pinches of paprika into the pan. At this point freestyle a bit. Some cumin, turmeric or even chilli to add a little heat. When the peppers have softened and infused with our spices add the chopped tomatoes. Simmer for 5 minutes to get those spices working and set aside. Now let’s get this Hake ready for the oven. Grab some tin foil a length of about 50cm. Put a nice spoon full of our spiced pepper mix onto the foil. On top of this wonderful pile of peppers place our Hake fillet with what would have been the skin side down. Pinch of salt on top, squeeze of lemon, some fresh basil leaves and we are set….. Almost. Next, we fold the foil over creating an ‘envelope’. Crimp it with your fingers around the side so none of the delicious juicy flavours escape. Repeat this technique for each fillet, then, place them all on a baking tray and put in your pre heated oven at 180oC for 20 minutes. Meanwhile.. Back at the hob. Scrub those potatoes up a slice them into nice discs. Put in a pan with salted water and gently boil until cooked through. Should take about 12-15mins. When they are ready, drain and place a knob of butter on them. Simple. Right. Let’s put this dish together. Take the tray of Hake out of the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Then on Your finest crockery put a neat stack of our delicious buttered new potatoes. Next get the ‘envelope’ of Hake and cut one side open and gingerly open. Remove the fish inside with a fish slice or some such uten- sil keeping the bed of peppers on the bottom. To finish add a nice wedge of lemon. Fresh. Delicious. Sexy food. In loving memory of Rhian Iling. (pictured right)
