Every known producer and distributor of film both theatrical and non-theatrical—whether an individual, a firm, or an or- ganization—has been consulted directly and repeatedly. Our method of gathering data and information from all these sources has been so perfected through the successive editions of "1000 and One" that we confidently offer this Seventh Edition as better than any preceding. No film was excluded from this edition merely because it had already appeared in a previous edition. But the mass of ma- terial increases every year and selection is compulsory. The aim has been to include, within the necessary space limitations, all the new and worthwhile material possible, together with all films from previous editions that are still most actively circulated. HOW TO USE "1000 AND ONE" /CONSULT first the Classified Subject Index on pages 8 10, f ^ 12, 14, snowing the subject-groups under which the films have -been arranged. This will -refer you direct to the pages and groups carrying the subjects you seek. Information on each film is given as follows : The title of the film appears in bold type. The number following shows the number of reels. Then follow brief review and comment on the film. Distributors of each film are indicated by number at the extreme right of the last line of description. These numbers refer to the Reference List of Producers and Distributors in the back of the book (pages 129-ff). Numbers with no symbol before them indicate distributors supplying film in 35 mm. size • indicates 16 mm. size ; A indicates "sound" version. Note that 16 mm. films are always non-flam. The 35 mm. films may be either flam or non-flam, hence distributor should be asked specifically about this point. The distributor of the particular film should be consulted. The Educational Screen itself does not handle films. It acts merely as the central clearing house for information on the whole production field of films, both theatrical and non-the- atrical. 'TREE FILMS" TN THE Reference List of Producers and Distributors we have indicated as far as possible the distributors of "free" films —namely, those to be had for the payment of transportation charges both ways, sometimes with further conditions stipulated. UNIVERSITY EXTENSION SERVICE rpHE State Universities and Extension Divisions are a very important source of non-theatrical films. Space limitations absolutely forbid the listing of the immense number of films carried by these Divisions. These excellent services are en- tirely local, as a rule, and gladly give full information to all film-users within their zone. As much information would be largely useless to the rest of the country it is omitted here. If you are not familiar with the service of your nearest State University, do not fail to write at once for their complete literature. 16 MILLIMETER FILMS fpHE rapid growth in the use of the 16 mm. film on non- inflammable stock—in both educational and entertainment subjects for home, school and church use-—has received most careful attention. All distributors handling 16 mm. films, partially or exclu- sively, are included in the Reference List of Producers and Distributors in the back of this book. Throughout the body of the book, all films available in 16 mm. are indicated by the symbol*. In addition, on pages 97 to 123, appears a separate list (fully classified by subject, and with group numbers corresponding to those in the regular classification), giving films available only in the 16 mm. size, with their distributors indicated. The Birth of a Nation as American Myth Abstract The Birth of a Nation was one of the most important films of all time, both for its technical and aesthetic achievements and for its enduring legacy of racism. This paper uses Bruce Lincoln's approach to myth as a form of discourse and Robert Bellah's notion of civil religion to show how Birth might be understood as a mythic component of American civil religion. From this perspective, Birth serves as a paradigmatic story of American origins rooted in ideas of white supremacy. At the end of the article Oscar Micheaux's work, Within our Gates, is used to briefly demonstrate filmic strategies for countering Birth as myth.     3 “The Spice of the Program” Educational Pictures and the Small-Town Audience “What the hell’s educational about a comedy?” asked slapstick producer Jack White in an interview toward the end of his life. “Something that was very offen- sive to me,” he continued, “was [the slogan] . ‘This is an Educational Comedy.’ There’s no such thing as educating yourself with a comedy. It’s a stupid name.”1 The object of White’s ire? The company for which he had produced and directed two- reel shorts for over a decade—the comedy distributor with the most unlikely of names: Educational Pictures. The company had been formed in 1915 as the Educational Films Corporation by real-estate man Earle W. Hammons, with the intent indicated by its name: to provide educational subjects for school, church, and other nontheatrical pur- poses. But by the late 1910s Hammons had realized little profit from this idea and began to target the commercial field, setting in motion a process of expan- sion that would see Educational become the dominant short-comedy distributor of the late silent era. “It did not take me long to find out that the demand [for educational films] did not exist and that we could not survive by doing that alone,” Hammons later recalled.2 As early as the 1918–1919 season, Educational had begun to diversify its product lines, adding Happy Hooligan and Silk Hat Harry cartoons to its weekly program of travelogues and informational sub- jects.3 In April 1920, Hammons signed director Jack White and comedian Lloyd Hamilton from Fox’s Sunshine Comedies to produce two-reel comedies under the brand name Mermaid Comedies, and began immediately taking further strides into the comedy market.4 The program for Educational’s 1920–1921 season, which represented the company’s first year of general commercial release, included four comedy series: the Mermaids, produced by White; C.

    MoMA Presents: More Cruel and Unusual Comedy: Social Commentary in the American Slapstick Film Part 2 October 6-14, 2010 Silent-era slapstick highlighted social, cultural, and aesthetic themes that continue to be central concerns around the world today; issues of race, gender, propriety, and economics have traditionally been among the most vital sources for rude comedy. Drawing on the Museum’s holdings of silent comedy, acquired largely in the 1970s and 1980s by former curator Eileen Bowser, Cruel and Unusual Comedy presents an otherwise little-seen body of work to contemporary audiences from an engaging perspective. The series, which first appeared in May 2009, continues with films that take aim at issues of sexual identity, substance abuse, health care, homelessness and economic disparity, and Surrealism. On October 8 at 8PM, Ms Bowser will address the connection between silent comedy and the international film archive movement, when she introduces a program of shorts that take physical comedy to extremes of dream-like invention and destruction. Audiences today will find the vulgar zest and anarchic spirit of silent slapstick has much in common with contemporary entertainment such as Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, MTV's Jackass and the current Jackass 3-D feature. A majority of the films in the series are archival rarities, often the only known surviving version, and feature lesser- remembered performers on the order of Al St. John, Lloyd Hamilton, Fay Tincher, Hank Mann, Lupino Lane, and even one, Diana Serra Cary (a.k.a. Baby Peggy), who, at 91, is the oldest living silent film star still active.
