Number of Workshops: 150 Number of Exhibitors: 250 The Western Washington Fairgrounds is home to the world-famous Puyallup Fair—one of the largest state fairs in the United States. In 2011, MOTHER EARTH NEWS launched its inaugural West Coast version of the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR at the venue’s state-of- the-art Americraft Showplex. Thousands of attendees experienced dozens of informative, hands-on workshops on more than 10 stages peppered throughout the Showplex and across the neighboring courtyard into the venue’s Centennial building. As anticipated, our guests showed up eager to learn and then set their newfound knowledge into motion as they shopped with our exhibitors. For 2012, expect to see new workshops based on what was most popular in 2011, more outdoor features, more exhibitors and a bigger stage site for our keynote speakers. Throughout both days, the FAIR buzzed with action as the MOTHER EARTH NEWS culture came to life! Check out images and video from 2011 at www.MotherEarthNewsFair.com. www.MotherEarthNewsFair.com THREE DAYS! SEVEN SPRINGS MOUNTAIN RESORT SEPT. 21-23, 2012 • SEVEN SPRINGS, PA. Number of Workshops: 200 Number of Exhibitors: 250 The second annual MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR at Seven Springs Mountain Resort was a SMASH! More than 13,000 guests enjoyed the setting of this beautiful four-season resort nestled in the rolling Laurel Highlands approximately one hour southeast of Pittsburgh, Pa. Check out images from 2011 at www.MotherEarthNewsFair.com. Fortunately we learned a thing or two from the previous year and the traffi c fl owed through our designated workshop and exhibitor spaces effortlessly. For 2012, we’ve added a third day, so attendees can take advantage of expanded workshop programming and spend more time perusing our exhibitors. Perhaps this attendee surveyed from our 2011 event sums it up best: “There are so many good things to see and so many people, it’s hard to fi nd time to see the vendors ... but we make it work!” Puyallup, Wash. • June 2-3 | Seven Springs, Pa. • Sept. 21-23 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT Joel Salatin – Keynote at Washington and Pennsylvania American Farmer, Lecturer and Author Joel Salatin is a self-described environmentalist-capitalist-lunatic farmer, or as The New York Times calls him, “the high priest of the pasture.” Profi led in Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Salatin employs an innovative farming system that has gained attention from around the country. J Agric Environ Ethics (2010) 23:455–468 DOI 10.1007/s10806-009-9226-x Meat and Morality: Alternatives to Factory Farming Evelyn B. Pluhar Accepted: 30 November 2009 / Published online: 18 December 2009 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009 Abstract Scientists have shown that the practice of factory farming is an increasingly urgent danger to human health, the environment, and nonhuman animal welfare. For all these reasons, moral agents must consider alternatives. Vegetarian food production, humane food animal farming, and in-vitro meat production are all explored from a variety of ethical perspectives, especially utilitarian and rights- based viewpoints, all in the light of current U.S. and European initiatives in the public and private sectors. It is concluded that vegetarianism and potentially in-vitro meat production are the best-justified options. Keywords Factory farming Á Humane farming Á In-vitro meat production Á Rights theory Á Utilitarianism Á Vegetarianism factory farming (FAK-tuh-ree FAHR-ming) noun: an industrialized system of producing meat, eggs, and milk in large-scale facilities where the animal is treated as a machine (Wordsmith 2008) After several years of receiving ‘‘A Word for the Day’’ from a dictionary service, the author was interested to see the above definition pop up in the email inbox. The timing was perhaps not coincidental. In spring 2008, the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production completed a two-year investigation of factory- farming practices in the United States. At the end of its 1,100-page report, the Commission recommended a ten-year timeline for the termination of the most intensive production techniques, including battery cages, gestation crates, and force- feeding birds to harvest their fatty livers for foie gras (Hunger Notes 2008).

BOWDLER May 2013 Copyright Jonathan A. Bowdler 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis will explore the regional and cultural dimensions of the Back-to-the-Land movement during the 1970s in an effort to move scholarship away from applying theoretical constructs such as post-modernism to diverse social movements. By drawing on the three main Back-to-the-Land publications, namely the Whole Earth Catalog, Mother Earth News, and the Foxfire books, this paper will demonstrate the varying impulses and regional nuances of the movement as well as the continuity and discontinuity of the back-to-nature tradition in America.

  • September Potluck Meeting
Thinking about solar? Between the 2019 Solar Home Tour and our next two meetings, there is much to think about and learn about. September Potluck Meeting Monday, September 16, 6:30 PM Washington Street Educational Center 512 E. Washington Street Room 112 It's the first grid-connected solar home in the Chelsea City limits! As we approach this year's Solar Home Tour (see below for more information), Brian Bieber will share with us the experience of going solar. Brian and his wife Christin had their system installed by Homeland Solar in 2017. Brian will discuss how they made the decision, the process of installation, connecting to the city's electric utility, and how the system performance has been during the first two years. Maybe he will talk about his recent time on the Chelsea Sustainability Advisory Commission, too. The Bieber home is featured in this year's solar tour. If you are thinking about solar yourself or just curious, see how a couple of "ordinary people" with kids did it. After the discussion with Brian Bieber, if we have time, we would like to talk as a group about an upcoming electric car show and topics for a new film series. Potluck meal begins at 6:30. Brian's presentation begins at 7:15. If you are coming to the potluck meal, please bring a dish to pass and your own place settings. Many thanks to the Chelsea Senior Center for providing us meeting space in the evenings. Free October Potluck Meeting Monday, October 21, 6:30 PM Washington Street Educational Center 512 E.
