Ariane 5’s First 2020 Launch is a Success Kourou, January 16, 2020 For its first launch of the year, Ariane 5 placed two telecommunications satellites in orbit: EUTELSAT KONNECT for Eutelsat and GSAT-30 for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) This was the 251st flight of an Ariane launcher, which celebrated its 40th anniversary on December 24, 2019 Arianespace, operator of the Ariane rocket, has scheduled 10 launches by 2022, including four more in 2020 For its first launch of the year from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, Ariane 5 placed two satellites in geostationary transfer orbit (GTO): the EUTELSAT KONNECT satellite for Eutelsat and the GSAT-30 satellite for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The total performance required of the launcher was 7,888 kg, including 6,976 kg for the two satellites injected into an orbit inclined 6° to the equator. “This successful first launch kicks off a special year for the Ariane sector because 2020 is the year of the inaugural flight of Ariane 6, which will be gradually taking over from Ariane 5 through to 2023. Ariane 5 will continue to demonstrate its incredible reliability for a further 10 flights, while series production of the first Ariane 6 models is underway at the industrial sites of ArianeGroup and its partners in Europe,” said André-Hubert Roussel, CEO of ArianeGroup. “As this new year begins, I wish to extend my very best wishes for success and my thanks for their commitment to all the engineers, technicians and colleagues in ArianeGroup, all of our industrial partners, and our launch- operator subsidiary, Arianespace. -

Bolden, Jr. Administrator National Aeronautics and Space Administration before the Subcommittee on Science and Space Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation U. S. Senate Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss the outlook for NASA’s human space flight program. This has been a remarkable year, as we have completed assembling and outfitting of the U.S. On-orbit Segment (USOS) of the International Space Station (ISS), allowing us to focus on full utilization of the Station’s research capabilities; taken key steps in moving forward into the future of exploration beyond Low-Earth Orbit (LEO); celebrated the 50 th anniversary of human spaceflight; and witnessed the successful conclusion of the historic Space Shuttle Program. We are also pleased with the progress our industry partners have made in developing an American capability to transport cargo and eventually astronauts to the ISS, and end the outsourcing of this work to foreign governments. More importantly, this will add a critical level of redundancy for transporting cargo and crew to the ISS. A robust transportation architecture is important to ensuring full utilization of this amazing research facility. Enabling commercial crew and cargo transportation systems in LEO allows NASA to focus on developing its own systems for sending astronauts on missions of exploration beyond LEO. This split between commercial and Government systems allows for a cost effective approach to promote a broad base for human exploration by the United States. -

A BOOST FOR SPACE COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES For its first launch of the year, Arianespace will orbit two communications satellites: ASTRA 3B for the Luxembourg-based operator SES ASTRA, and COMSATBw-2 for Astrium as part of a contract with the German Ministry of Defense. The choice of Arianespace by leading space communications operators and manufacturers is clear international recognition of the company’s excellence in launch services. Because of its reliability and availability, the Arianespace launch system continues to set the global standard. Ariane 5 is the only commercial satellite launcher now on the market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads. Over the last two decades, Arianespace and SES have developed an exceptional relationship. ASTRA 3B will be the 33rd satellite from the SES group (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Bourse: SESG) to have chosen the European launcher. SES ASTRA operates the leading direct-to-home TV broadcast system in Europe, serving more than 125 million households via DTH and cable networks. ASTRA 3B was built by Astrium using a Eurostar E 3000 platform, and will weigh approximately 5,500 kg at launch. Fitted with 60 active Ku-band transponders and four Ka-band transponders, ASTRA 3B will be positioned at 23.5 degrees East. It will deliver high-power broadcast services across all of Europe, and offers a design life of 15 years. Astrium chose Arianespace for the launch of two military communications satellites, COMSATBw-1 and COMSATBw-2, as part of a satellite communications system supplied to the German Ministry of Defense. The first satellite in this family, COMSATBw-1, was launched by Arianespace in October 2009. -
