In this research, the researcher uses quasi-experimental design. The researcher uses two classes. In experiment class and control class group the researcher applies pre-test and post-test design as the research design. The population is students of the second grade of MTs Al-Falah. The sample is B class as the experimental group and A class as the control group. Every group has 33 students. The result of the study reveals that using group discussion is effective to be used in teaching and learning speaking English. This can be seen from the calculation of t-observation is 2.65 with 5% significant level with 64 df is 2.00. -

ACIAR Project FIS/2001/079 5. ARTISANAL FISHERIES There is no universal definition of “artisanal fisheries” but common criteria (SEAFDEC 1999) include 1. Small scale and often decentralized operations, 2. A predominance of small vessels (often <10 GT), 3. A predominance of traditional fishing gears (but may include trawl, seine, gill-net, and longline vessels), 4. Fishing trips are generally short and inshore, and 5. The fisheries are often largely subsistence fisheries, but there may be some commercial component. The ports surveyed for the artisanal component of this report only meet these criteria to varying degrees, with some being home to many vessels >10 GT, and with centralized commercial operations. However, for the purposes of this study, “artisanal ports” includes not only the smallest scale of landing place at the fishing village level (i.e. what most readers would consider truly artisanal), but also these larger landing places where fishing vessels are primarily owned by fishing households, but not by fishing companies, and where the majority of vessels are smaller than 25 GT. A summary of key features of the artisanal landing places surveyed are shown in Table 5.0.1. More detailed descriptions are provided in the sections that follow. 5.1 Bungus – Padang, Pariaman, and Painan (West Sumatra) There are 5 provinces on the west coast of Sumatra – from north to south, the provinces of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (formerly Daerah Istimewa Aceh), North Sumatra (Sumatra Utara), West Sumatra (Sumatra Barat), Bengkulu, and Lampung. Numerous islands are located off this coast - Banyak Archipelago islands in the north, Nias Island, Tanahmasa and Tanahbala Islands, the Mentawai Islands (that include Siberut, Sipura and Pagai Islands), and Enggano Island in the south. -

Hammons Recent studies in the anthropology of mobility tend to privilege the cultural imaginaries in which human movements are embedded rather than the actual, physical movements of people through space. This article offers an ethnographic case study in which ‘imagined mobility’ is limited to people who are not mobile, who are immobile or sedentary and thus reflects a ‘sedentarist metaphysics’. The case comes from the island of Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, where government modernisation programs in the second half of the twentieth century focused on relocating clans from their ancestral lands to model, multi-clan villages and on converting people from the indigenous religion to Christianity. -

Briggs,1,2 Kerry Sieh,1,3 William H. Amidon,1 John Galetzka,1 Dudi Prayudi,4 Imam Suprihanto,5 Nugraha Sastra,4 Bambang Suwargadi,4 Danny Natawidjaja,4 and Thomas G. Farr6 Received 11 March 2008; revised 24 July 2008; accepted 17 September 2008; published 12 December 2008. [1] We quantify fore-arc deformation using fossil reefs to test the assumption commonly made in seismic cycle models that anelastic deformation of the fore arc is negligible. Elevated coral microatolls, paleoreef flats, and chenier plains show that the Sumatran outer arc island of Nias has experienced a complex pattern of relatively slow long-term uplift and subsidence during the Holocene epoch. This same island rose up to 2.9 m during the Mw 8.7 Sunda megathrust rupture in 2005. The mismatch between the 2005 and Holocene uplift patterns, along with the overall low rates of Holocene deformation, reflects the dominance of elastic strain accumulation and release along this section of the Sunda outer arc high and the relatively subordinate role of upper plate deformation in accommodating long-term plate convergence. The fraction of 2005 uplift that will be retained permanently is generally <4% for sites that experienced more than 0.25 m of coseismic uplift. Average uplift rates since the mid-Holocene range from 1.5 to 0.2 mm/a and are highest on the eastern coast of Nias, where coseismic uplift was nearlyÀ zero in 2005. -

Traditional notions of sickness etiology are set in the context of both Christian beliefs and the state's efforts to promulgate modem, 'scientific' understandings, in order to show how sociologically distinguished individuals draw variously at different times and contexts on all three fields of sickness interpretation and management. The thesis begins with a history of Nias relations with the outside world, in order to delineate the genealogy of modem Indonesian attitudes to local culture. -
