Made ground material was observed overlying the natural ground horizon across the subject site and was up to 5.9 metres in thickness. There remains a slight risk of differential settlement and/or subsidence of the heterogeneous made ground material. No other areas of suspect ground or deeper slots of backfill were encountered during the investigation. The results from the Contaminated Land report indicate that the subject site is ‘suitable for use’, and no remedial works within the area of the proposed development as regards to potential contamination are necessary. The identified risks along with the required actions are provided in the table below: ASSESSMENT RISK ACTION REQUIRED (Y/N)? Mining Stability (area Low Y: Conventional strip foundations investigated) unlikely to be suitable, special foundation design may be required. Land contamination Passed N: Subject site ‘suitable for use’, no remedial measures necessary. Radon Moderate Y: Basic radon protective measures required Report Ref: AM/BP/78669.pi.pii.si 8th January 2016 Page 4 of 37 Contaminated Land Desk Study Phase I, Generic Quantitative Risk Assessment Phase II and Site Investigation Report Proposed Residential Development, Land at Wheal Rose, Roche Road, Bugle, PL26 8PP 1. INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Further to your request, we are pleased to present our Contaminated Land Desk Study Phase I, Generic Quantitative Risk Assessment Phase II and Site Investigation for the Proposed Residential Development, Land at Wheal Rose, Roche Road, Bugle, PL26 8PP. This report provides a preliminary assessment of the site based on historical information, the geological and environmental setting, and a site investigation, in accordance with the Model Procedures for the Management of Land Contamination (CLR11) (2004) as set out by the Environment Agency. All available & relevant information relating to the potential contamination of the site is used to construct an initial conceptual site model (CSM) with regards to contaminants. A preliminary risk assessment can then be carried out, categorising the apparent risk(s) associated with the site in relation to the current and proposed future land use. This will determine the potential need for, and scope of any further work in terms of a Generic Quantitative Risk Assessment. We understand the site is subject to a proposed residential development. This report is considered suitable to satisfy the preliminary planning application for the proposed development of the site. Report Ref: AM/BP/78669.pi.pii.si 8th January 2016 Page 5 of 37 2. PREVIOUS WORKS This report follows a Metalliferous Mining Search (ref: PR/78669) conducted by ourselves on the 23rd October 2015, which identified the subject property to lie within the Beam mining sett and the within the general area of the Wheal Rose clay works. In addition, the report identified multiple mining related feature features within the search plan area which are described below: Four poorly recorded mineralised veins are indicated to pass through the subject property at an undefined elevation of plot and to follow a SSW-NNE alignment. Mining Searches UK have no evidence that these mineralised veins have been observed or worked at surface within the area covered by the search plan. An old watercourse is recorded to pass through the subject property. This watercourse is indicated to be associated with china clay processing. An area of wasteland is recorded to encroach into the western part of the subject property.

  • The Micro-Geography of Nineteenth Century Cornish Mining?
MINING THE DATA: WHAT CAN A QUANTITATIVE APPROACH TELL US ABOUT THE MICRO-GEOGRAPHY OF NINETEENTH CENTURY CORNISH MINING? Bernard Deacon (in Philip Payton (ed.), Cornish Studies Eighteen, University of Exeter Press, 2010, pp.15-32) For many people the relics of Cornwall’s mining heritage – the abandoned engine house, the capped shaft, the re-vegetated burrow – are symbols of Cornwall itself. They remind us of an industry that dominated eighteenth and nineteenth century Cornwall and that still clings on stubbornly to the margins of a modern suburbanised Cornwall. The remains of this once thriving industry became the raw material for the successful World Heritage Site bid of 2006. Although the prime purpose of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site team is to promote the mining landscapes of Cornwall and west Devon and the Cornish mining ‘brand’, the WHS website also recognises the importance of the industrial and cultural landscapes created by Cornish mining in its modern historical phase from 1700 to 1914.1 Ten discrete areas are inscribed as world heritage sites, stretching from the St Just mining district in the far west and spilling over the border into the Tamar Valley and Tavistock in the far east. However, despite the use of innovative geographic information system mapping techniques, visitors to the WHS website will struggle to gain a sense of the relative importance of these mining districts in the history of the industry. Despite a rich bibliography associated with the history of Cornish mining the historical geography of the industry is outlined only indirectly.2 The favoured historiographical approach has been to adopt a qualitative narrative of the relentless cycle of boom and bust in nineteenth century Cornwall.

THE MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS OF CORNWALL Cofscryvow Kernow THE PARISH OF MOUNT HAWKE Towl Bedhcryvow Kernow Numerous plaques, burial ground headstones, foundation stones and formal monuments record the lives or actions of both the famous and successful as well as the ordinary person. By far the most numerous of these will be found in burial grounds, others will be located on War Memorials; inscriptions are inevitably inscribed on foundation stones of public buildings; special plaques may be erected to record an heroic or notable event or birth place; there are prominent monuments to the rich or extraordinary such as the Bassett Monument on Carn Brea or the Lander statue at the top of Lemon Street in Truro; churches and chapels as well as community buildings often have wall plaques. The majority will date from the past three hundred years but some will be very old, such as a few ancient crosses from the seventh/eight centuries recording a chieftain or important person of that time. Written records such as parish baptism, marriage and death registers, diaries, deeds, court, taxes and voting records and numerous other “paper” records are, in varying degrees of efficiency, preserved and recorded by the County Records Office and museums and transcribed, indexed and published by local historians and societies. However, numerous records of the people of Cornwall may also be found on stone, slate, marble, wood and metal. Some of these (particularly in burial grounds) have been recorded but usually in index form without a full transcript. Maps indicating locations within a burial ground are virtually nonexistent.
