    Recordings of Mahler Symphony No. 4 by Stan Ruttenberg, President, Colorado MahlerFest SUMMARY After listening to each recording once or twice to get the general feel, on bike rides, car trips, while on the Internet etc, I then listened more carefully, with good headphones, following the score. They are listed in the survey in about the order in which I listened, and found to my delight, and disgust, that as I went on I noticed more and more details to which attention should be paid. Lack of time and adequate gray matter prevented me from going back and re-listening all over again, except for the Mengelberg and Horenstein recordings, and I did find a few points to change or add. I found that JH is the ONLY conductor to have the piccolos play out adequately in the second movement, and Claudio Abbado with the Vienna PO is the only conductor who insisted on the two horn portamenti in the third movement.. Stan's prime picks: Horenstein, Levine, Reiner, Szell, Skrowaczewski, von Karajan, Abravanel, in that order, but the rankings are very close. Also very good are Welser- Most, and Klemperer with Radio Orchestra Berlin, and Berttini at Cologne. Not one conductor met all my tests of faithfulness to the score in all the too many felicities therein, but these did the best and at the same time produced a fine overall performance. Mengelberg, in a class by himself, should be heard for reference. Stan's soloist picks: Max Cencic (boy soprano with Nanut), in a class by himself. Then come, not in order, Davrath (Abravanel), Mathes (von Karajan), Trötschel (Klemperer BRSO), Raskin (Szell), Blegen (Levine), Della Casa (Reiner), Irmgard Seefried (Walter), Jo Vincent (Mengelberg), Ameling (Haitink RCOA), Ruth Zeisek (Gatti), Margaret Price with Horenstein, and Kiri Te Kanawa (Solti), Szell (Rattle broadcast), and Battle (Maazel).

    Dresdner Philharmonie The Dresden Philharmonic can look back on 150 years of history as the orchestra of Saxony’s capital Dresden. When the so-called “Gewerbehaussaal” opened on 29 November 1870, the citizens of the city were given the opportunity to organise major orchestra concerts. Philharmonic concerts were held regularly starting in 1885; the orchestra adopted its present name in 1923. In its first decades, composers such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Strauss conducted the Dresdner Philharmonie with their own works. The first desks were presided over by outstanding concertmasters such as Stefan Frenkel, Simon Goldberg and the cellists Stefan Auber and Enrico Mainardi. From 1934, Carl Schuricht and Paul van Kempen led the orchestra; van Kempen in particular guided the Dresden Philharmonic to top achievements. All of Bruckner’s symphonies were first performed in their original versions, which earned the orchestra the reputation of a “Bruckner orchestra” and brought renowned guest conductors such as Hermann Abendroth, Eduard van Beinum, Fritz Busch, Eugen Jochum, Joseph Keilbert, Erich Kleiber, Hans Knappertsbusch and Franz Konwitschny to the rostrum. After 1945 and into the 1990s, Heinz Bongartz, Horst Förster, Kurt Masur (from 1994 also honorary conductor), Günther Herbig, Herbert Kegel, Jörg-Peter Weigle and Michel Plasson were the principal conductors. In recent years, conductors such as Marek Janowski, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Michael Sanderling have shaped the orchestra.     Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau - mehr als ›der wohlbekannte Sänger‹ Gottfried Kraus (Minihof-Liebau) In seiner persönlich gehaltenen Erinnerung sucht der Musikpublizist Gottfried Kraus die komplexe Persönlichkeit und vielfältige Lebensleistung Dietrich Fischer-Dieskaus in großen Zügen darzustellen. Von der ersten Erinnerung des 15jährigen Konzertbesuchers an ein Brahms-Requiem unter Furtwängler im Wiener Konzerthaus und an Fischer-Dieskaus erste Winterreise im Januar 1951 spannt sich der Bogen über Eindrücke in Konzert und Oper und die umfassende Beschäftigung mit Fischer-Dieskaus Schallplattenaufnahmen bis zu gemeinsamer Arbeit. Als Leiter der Musikabteilung des Österreichischen Rundfunks lud Kraus den Sänger und Dirigenten Fischer-Dieskau zu Aufgaben im Studio und bei den Salzburger Festspielen. Auch für Schallplattenaufnahmen ergaben sich spätere Kontakte. Aus vielfältiger Erfahrung und nicht zuletzt auch aus freundschaftlicher Nähe zeichnet Kraus ein Bild Fischer-Dieskaus, der mehr ist und auch mehr sein will als nur ‚der wohlbekannte Sänger‘ – ein Künstler von unglaublicher Breite, den umfassende Bildung, das Bewusstsein großer Tradition, lebenslange Neugierde, Offenheit und enormer Fleiß dazu befähigten, auch als Rezitator, Dirigent, Musikschriftsteller und Maler Ungewöhnliches zu leisten. In his personally touched memoires the music publisher Gottfried Kraus tries to present the complex personality of Fischer-Dieskau and the miscellaneous achievements in his life along general lines. Starting with the fist remembrance of the 15-year-old concert visitor of a Brahms-Requiem conducted by Furtwängler at the Wiener Konzerthaus and the first Winterreise of Fischer-Dieskau in January 1951 he encompasses impressions of concerts and operas as well as the comprehensive engagement with disc records of Fischer-Dieskau up to their common work. As the head of the music department of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, Kraus invited the singer and conductor Fischer-Dieskau for recordings in the studio and to the Salzburg Festival.

    Dick Bruggeman Werner Unger Otto Klemperer Curriculum vitae 1885 Born 14 May in Breslau, Germany (since 1945: Wrocław, Poland). 1889 The family moves to Hamburg, where the 9-year old Otto for the first time of his life spots Gustav Mahler (then Kapellmeister at the Municipal Theatre) out on the street. 1901 Piano studies and theory lessons at the Hoch Conservatory, Frankfurt am Main. 1902 Enters the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin. 1905 Continues piano studies at Berlin’s Stern Conservatory, besides theory also takes up conducting and composition lessons (with Hans Pfitzner). Conducts the off-stage orchestra for Mahler’s Second Symphony under Oskar Fried, meeting the composer personally for the first time during the rehearsals. 1906 Debuts as opera conductor in Max Reinhardt’s production of Offenbach’s Orpheus in der Unterwelt, substituting for Oskar Fried after the first night.
