The Regional Safe Spaces Network in the Americas: Lessons Learned And THE REGIONAL SAFE SPACES NETWORK IN THE AMERICAS LESSONS LEARNED AND TOOLKIT The Regional Safe Spaces Network (hereinafter RSSN or “the Network”) was established in the Americas region in 2017 with the support of the UNHCR’s Regional Legal Unit of the Americas Bureau (RLU), and particularly its Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) and Child Protection (CP) team (RLU SGBV/CP). The Network coordinated by the RLU SGBV/CP led the development and implementation of a regional protection strategy to address the needs of people displaced as a result of violence and persecution and other people on the move. In consultation with partners and communities the Network focused on improving access to essential services for women, girls, but also men and boys survivors of SGBV, children at risk, LGBTI1 people with protection needs, and other people affected by serious human rights violations. The Network developed this Toolkit, promoting common standards to foster cross-border coordination in the North of Central America and the countries affected by the Venezuelan situation2. It includes tools developed or used by the network. The toolkit is a living document that will be reviewed and updated as the Network expands and develops new tools. At present, more than 50 organizations providing services in seven different countries3 are members of the Network and it is expected that new members and countries will join it in the coming months. The RSSN members and its coordinator like to thank all those who participated in the development of toolkit, and particularly the RLU SGBV/CP team members, and the SGBV unit of the UNHCR’s Division of International Protection (DIP) for its continued support and assistance throughout the design and implementation process, as well as the Sexual Violence Program of the Human Rights Center, Berkeley School of Law for its valuable contribution. 1. The Network includes more than 50 members: UNHCR, RSSN UNFPA, IOM, national institutions, civil society, faith- based organizations, and community volunteers working on SGBV, child protection and human rights in NCA, Venezuela and neighboring countries. The RSSN aims to improve disclosure8 of serious AGE, GENDER, DIVERSITY protection incidents, reaching out to the most vulnerable (AGD)5 & SURVIVor- CENTERED APPROACH6, individuals and ensuring delivery of quality services along 9 CHILD’S BEST INTERESTS the displacement cycle . PRINCIPLE7: PROJEct OVERVIEW In 2016, the Child Protection & SGBV team of the Regional Legal Unit (RLU) in the Americas developed the Regional Safe Spaces Network (RSSN) strategy to improve access to services for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), children at risk, people with diverse sexual orientation and gender identity, people with disabilities, indigenous population and other vulnerable individuals at every phase of the displacement cycle throughout the Americas. 4. Disclosure is when an individual approaches a case manager or service provider and tells them what happened with him/her. He or she may disclose his/her experience to a trusted family member or friend. 9. The “displacement cycle” refers to four phases of displacement (origin, transit, destination, return). 7 AMERICAS REGIONAL SAFE SPACES NETWORK LESSONS LEARNED AND TOOLKIT PART 1: INTRODUCTION The RSSN was established in 2017. The Network prioritized the North of Central America (NCA), Venezuela and neighboring countries to address the needs of displaced populations fleeing violence and persecution. At present the RSSN has more than 50 members including UN and non-UN agencies, civil society, faith-based organizations, national institutions and community-volunteer networks working in seven countries in the Americas (Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Chile). It is expected that the Network will continue to expand to other countries following trends in displacement. Building on a recent mimetic turn, or re-turn of mimesis in critical theory, this paper focuses on the British science fiction television series, Black Mirror (2011–2018) to reflect critically on the hypermimetic impact of new digital technologies on the formation and transformation of subjectivity.     Be Right Back The first episode in the second series of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror examines questions of technology in the context of meaning and relationships. Synopsis Martha and Ash have just moved into his late mother’s home. Ash, who is always on his phone using Facebook and Twitter, tells Martha that his mother put all the photos of his dead brother away in the attic as if she couldn’t bear to be reminded of him. On his way to return the van they hired for the move, Ash is killed. Martha is beside herself with grief, and feels the pain of loss and loneliness. At the wake, a friend says that there is a new technology which will help Martha through her pain and that she has signed her up to it. Martha says she doesn’t want to know. Later she gets an email telling her she is signed up and then an email from ‘Ash’. She quickly deletes it. Martha’s grief is redoubled when she discovers she is pregnant. First she phones her sister for help, but when her sister doesn’t reply, she goes to the email trash and retrieves the email from ‘Ash’. The idea is that someone’s personality can be retrieved from everything they have ever said or done online through social media. Photos, videos, messages, blogs, all the constant stream of communication we post online can be used to recreate the dead. Martha begins by emailing and ‘Ash’ replies to her. She tells him she is pregnant and he responds enthusiastically.

I engage with posthumanist theory and utilize narrative rhetorical criticism and the method of articulation to analyze a selection of ten episodes. Based on the textual analysis, I contend that each selected narrative reveals a unique hypothetical scenario that questions the humanist conceptualization of human nature in addition to envisioning potentials for challenging the common understanding of self, identity, subjectivity, and agency. With its controversial and multilayered articulations of the posthuman condition, I propose that this quality science fiction television program takes as its central theme the symbiotic technology/human relationship as the kernel of a co- constructed reality between these two actants in the digital age.
