This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

    Tanzania Ages (13-15) The flag of Tanzania was adopted on June 30, 1964. It is the merger of the flags of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The name Tanzania is derived from the names of the two states Tanganyika and Zanzibar that became united in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. This was later renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. The flag is divided diagonally by a yellow-edged black band from the lower hoist-side corner. The green represents the natural vegetation present in the country, yellow represents the rich mineral deposits of the country, black represents the people of Tanzania, and blue represents the numerous lakes and rivers and the Indian Ocean. + = Flag of Tanganyika Flag of Zanzibar Flag of Tanzania COAT OF ARMS The golden top of the warriors shield in the coat of arms represents the minerals that can be found in the Republic. The torch in this part represents UHURU, a Swahili word meaning freedom. The red part underneath the flag symbolizes the rich and fertile soil of Africa. The wavy blue bands underneath the red represent the land, sea, lakes and the coastal lines of the United Republic. The spear in the shield signifies defense of freedom and the axe and hoe represent the development of the country. The motto of the United Republic, Uhuru na Umoja is written at the base of the coat of arms which signifies Mount Kilimanjaro. It means freedom and unity. GEOGRAPHY The United Republic of Tanzania is a country in East Africa. Park Assistant Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Copyright by Soo-Jin Kim 2011 Abstract This study contributes to understanding diaspora and its music cultures by examining the Korean genre of p’ungmul as a particular site of continuous and dynamic cultural socio-political exchange between the homeland and the host society. As practiced in Los Angeles and New York City, this genre of percussion music and dance is shaped by Korean cultural politics, intellectual ideologies and institutions as p’ungmul practitioners in the United States seek performance aesthetics that fit into new performance contexts. This project first describes these contexts by tracing the history of Korean emigration to the United States and identifying the characteristics of immigrant communities in Los Angeles and New York City. While the p’ungmul troupes developed by Korean political refugees, who arrived during the 1980s, show the influence of the minjung cultural movement in Korea, cultural politics of the Korean government also played an important role in stimulating Korean American performers to learn traditional Korean performing arts by sending troupes to the United States. The dissertation then analyzes the various methods by which p’ungmul is transmitted in the United States, including the different methods of teaching and learning p’ungmul—writing verbalizations of instrumental sounds on paper, score, CD/DVD, and audio/video files found on the internet—and the cognitive consequences of those methods.

    POLITICS AND THEATRE IN TANZANIA AFTER THE ARUSHA DECLARATION, 1967-1984 AMANDINA LIHAMBA A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS SCHOOL OF ENGLISH 1985 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the practice of theatre in Tanzania after the Arusha Declaration of 1967, The Arusha Declaration as Tanzania's blueprint for socialist transformation ushered in an era in which economic and political attempts were made to direct the country towards Ujamaa and away from capitalist structures and development. The social reality of the period has been dominated by the articulation between the attempts for the socialist transformation and the histor­ ical political factors supporting or undermining the transformation. This thesis discusses contemporary Tanzanian theatre within the frame­ work of the political events and social reality after 1967. There are six chapters in the thesis. Chapter 1 provides the historical back­ ground of contemporary Tanzanian theatre. It includes an examination of traditional theatre performances within and outside the colonial experience as well as the historical role of Kiswahili as a chosen language of theatre communication. Chapter 2 looks into the Arusha Declaration, its tenets, objectives, some aspects of its effects on social practices and the theoretical responses regarding the role of an art form such as theatre within Ujamaa. A discussion on the works of Tanzania's leading playwright, Ebrahim Hussein, is the concern of Chapter 3. Chapter 4 examines plays and performances by the other theatre practitioners of the period. Official policies and the practice of theatre in state institutions are described in Chapter 5 and the last Chapter covers the development of theatre for social development as well as the nature of theatre control and censorship in the period under investigation.
