With 22 dates confirmed, the Live Nation promoted tour will open in Dallas, Texas, on June 9 and finish in Washington D.C. on July 20, making it their most extensive North American tour in many years. From their self-titled debut via their worldwide breakthrough album “The Number of the Beast” to the most recent masterpiece, “A Matter of Life and Death,” for over the last 30 years at the forefront of Metal, Iron Maiden have influenced everyone from massive acts such as Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer to aspiring metal stars Mastodon, Bullet for My Valentine and Trivium, while selling over 80 million albums and packing arenas and stadiums worldwide. Because when that happens, there will be a Second Messiah!’ Like, yeah Blaze, whatever man. Let’s get this straight: I don’t like Iron Maiden. I can’t hear that name without thinking of widdly guitar solos, pompous over-the-top lyrics, grown men in shorts, Dungeons & Dragons, scampi flavour Nik-Naks, sacrificial virgins - you get the picture. So what am I doing at a gig whose main attraction is Blaze Bayley, the man who fronted Maiden through what is considered to have been their worst years? Well, there is the added bonus of Risactonia and Black Atom, two bands that are always good to watch. And I have been informed that Blaze’s solo material sounds nothing like that of his previous employers. Anyway, who can resist a good metal gig? This is Aberdeen after all, a lonely outpost that plays host to such diverse names as David Gray and Coldplay. It’s just too good an opportunity to miss. By the time Blaze come on, a steady crowd has gathered, largely made up of old Maiden fans, who seem to crawl out of the woodwork whenever such events come around, plus a good number of metal kids. Even Fudge decide to grace us with their presence. Black seems to be the colour of choice tonight. The band are dressed in black. The stage is black. And I am wearing, well, white for some reason. The other thing I should mention about the stage is the huge drum-kit that takes up half of it.

Throughout its existence, heavy metal has been mired with controversies; critics slighted the music by shunning it off as being riddled with overblown adolescent theatrics, and conservative groups have accused the genre of being provocative due to its evil lyrical content. Inspite of all those adversities, heavy metal has held its stance as one of the most consistent forms of rock music. Metal music, through its efforts has reinstated the “ancient Indo-European spirit of vir”1 through a Romantic, Faustian form of music culture. This has staggered the general concept of mainstream music and has hence, since long, remained controversial. Heavy metal has never been popular with the mainstream masses, primarily due to the nature of the music. Amongst other things, lyrical content of the songs is one thing that is largely frowned upon and often considered to be one of the primary reasons why metal music has never struck a chord with the masses. But such allegations, while partly true, remain biased to a large extent.

Aqui propomos tecer uma reflexão geral acerca de diversos aspectos versados na capa do álbum intitulado Powerslave, da banda Iron Maiden, como a relação entre produção, consumo e apropriação de elementos da cultura do Antigo Egito pela indústria cultural da década de 1980. Também debatemos a ressignificação desses elementos para funcionar no contexto fantasioso da ilustração. Por fim, abordamos a relação da morte com o rock e, finalmente, como as funções específicas da capa como proteção do LP e a sua funcionalidade como suporte visual. Here we propose to weave a reflection, in a very general way about a number of aspects on the cover of the album titled Powerslave, by the musical group Iron Maiden, as the relationship between production, consumption and appropriation of the old elements of Ancient Egyptian culture by the cultural industry of the 1980's. We also discuss the redefinition of these elements to operate in the context of fantasy illustration. Then, we approach the relation between death and rock'n'roll, and finally the specific functions of the cover as a protection and its functionality as visual support.

Però l'estil de vida d'excessos amb l'alcohol i les drogues que tenien física i psicològicament desgastat al fins aquell moment cantant Paul Di' Anno estava començant a posar en seriós perill la contínua ascensió de la banda i això era una cosa que el seu fundador, Steve Harris no estava disposat a consentir. La conseqüència d'aquests excessos va portar a Paul Di' Anno a ser expulsat de la banda. El seu substitut seria Bruce Dickinson, la veu més potent i enèrgica que ha donat Anglaterra i conegut amb el sobrenom d' Air Raid Siren, sirena d'atac antiaeri. Steve Harris juntament amb el manager d' Iron Maiden Rod Smallwood van anar personalment a veure'l al concert de Samson (banda en la que cantava aleshores) al festival de Reading al 1981 (a l'any següent repetiria en el mateix festival però com a cantant d' Iron Maiden i de caps de cartell, arrasant davant unes 35.000 persones) i no molts dies més tard es convertia en el nou cantant de la banda.
