A very honest and well-written bookBy LucidityI remember first coming across Gia Carangi many, many years ago in what, if I can recall correctly, was an issue of Vogue. Ever since that day, I’ve always been a huge fan and never lost interest in her. I knew I had to give this a book a read as soon as I came across it, and now that I’ve just finished, I can definitely say I’m more than impressed and glad I had the opportunity to give it a read. “Born This Way” does a very admirable job of covering just about every aspect of Gia’s life, including both the good and the bad. Although I found some of the parts quite sad to read, I was glad that the author made sure to include them because it gives a very straightforward and honest look into her life as a result. I can’t recommend this book enough. Brown, Chair Every January and June, the most exclusive and influential sector of the global apparel industry stages a series of runway shows in the high fashion, or, couture capitals of New York, Milan, London and Paris. This dissertation explores the production of material goods and cultural ideals in contemporary couture, drawing on scholarly and anecdotal accounts of the business of couture clothes as well as the business of couture models to understand the disquieting success of marketing luxury goods through bodies that appear to signify both extreme wealth and extreme privation. This dissertation argues that the contemporary couture industry idealizes a mode of violence that is unique in couture’s history. The industry’s shift of emphasis toward the mass market in the late 20th-century entailed divestments in the integrity of garment production and modeling employment. Since that time, tens of millions of people have been infected with HIV worldwide. The Global HIV/AIDS Timeline is designed to serve as an ongoing reference tool for the many political, scientific, cultural, and community developments that have occurred over the history of the epidemic. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done. ~avert.org, 2006 2 While 1981 is generally referred to as the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, scientists believe that HIV was present years before the first case was brought to public attention. In 1959, The first known case of HIV in a human occurs in a person who died in the Congo, later confirmed as hav- ing HIV infection from his preserved blood samples. The authors of the study did not sequence a full virus from his samples, writing that "attempts to amplify HIV-1 fragments of >300 base pairs were unsuccessful, . As early as 1972, ABC’s That Certain Summer, explored the relationship between a divorced gay man and his son to warm critical reception and a subsequent Golden Globe award for “Best Movie Made for TV.” Similarly, ABC’s A Question of Love (1978) marked an early portrayal of a lesbian mother, her loving relationship with her domestic partner and their joint effort to retain custody of their children in a climate of homophobia. An Early Frost, broadcast on NBC in 1985, garnered wide acclaim and numerous awards as one of the first network programs to dramatically and sensitively examine the devastating impact of the AIDS crisis on a gay individual and his family. Unencumbered by pressures to accommodate advertisers, productions originating from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and cable networks have consistently presented a wider range of earnest depictions of LGBT lifestyles than have been previously shown on television. HBO’s More Than Friends: The Coming Out of Heidi Leiter (1994) featured an early small screen same-sex kiss in its examination of a teenager’s realization of her lesbian sexual orientation. Showtime’s drama, Soldier’s Girl (2003) offered the true story of hate crime victim Barry Winchell, a 21-year-old private first class who falls in love with a transgendered nightclub performer.
