During the Gophers’ 27-year run in the Dome, more than seven million football fans have flooded into the Metrodome to witness Golden Gopher football excitement. In recent years, Golden Gopher football at the Metrodome has become even more exciting. A multi-million dollar plaza was constructed outside the Dome, complete with food and beverages, picnic tables and a stage for entertainment. Pre- game concerts, interactive games, appearances by the Uni - versity of Minnesota Marching Band and other entertaining events attract crowds larger than ever. In addition, tailgating festivities take place in adjacent parking lots, just another part that helps define the atmosphere that surrounds big-time col - lege football. One of the long-time staples of Minnesota foot - ball is the Golden Gopher Marching Band that boasts a tradition of 116 years. Under the leadership of professor Jerry Luckhardt, the 300-member band electrifies the crowd with pre-game, halftime and post-game entertainment. The game day excitement surrounding Gopher Football will only increase in coming years with the construction of a new on-campus facility, TCF Bank Stadium, that will open for the 2009 season.
