TilE VIETNAM WAR ON TRIAL: TilE COURT-MARTIAL OF DR. HOWARD B. LEVY ROBERT N. STRASSFELD• This Article examines the history of a Vietnam War-era case: the court-martial of Dr. Howard B. Levy. The U.S. Army court-martialled Dr. Levy for refusing to teach medicine to Green Beret soldiers and for criticizing both the Green Berets and American involvement in Vietnam. Although the Supreme Court eventually upheld Levy's convicti on in Parkerv. Levy, ill decision obscures the political content of Levy's court-martial and its relationshipto the war. At the court-martialLe vy sought to defend himself by showing that his disparaging remarks about the Green Berets, identifying them as "killers of peasants and murderers of women and children," were true and that his refusal to teach medicine to Green Beret soldiers was dictated by medical ethics, given the ways in which the soldiers would misuse their medical knowledge.

I! ^ The agreement was signed by the majority of the shipping com­ panies as the SEAFARERS LOG went to press. Among those sign­ ing were: Bull Line, Waterman SS Co., Isthmian SS Co., Victory Carriers, Seatrain Lines, Seas Shipping Co., and the Orion agency. The Union won an agreement that is, for the first time, uniform for all contracted dry cargo companies in the industry. Money pro­ visions are subject to WSB approval. The full text of the agreement and an analysis of its provisions will be published in the next issue of the LOG. Meanwhile, copies of the new contract will be dispatched to all affected vessels within the next few days. (For earlier story, see page 3). I* f%mm Pictured in one of his last public ap­ rOSSCS wlla pearances at the AFL convention in NY during September, AFL President William Green passed away last week at his home in Coshocton, Ohio, at the age of 82. The post of the Veteran AFL leader, head of the Fed­ eration since 1924, has been filled by AFL Secretary­Treas­ urer George Meany amid reports of renewed effort for unity between the AFL and CIO. The Japs were noted for shooting up life-boats after sinking enemy ships, so Mr Duck stayed aboard his ship, firing his gun at the sub until it submerged. I read the Admiralty Fleet order, every British Ship got one, and I understand Mr Duck went down with his ship. I am proud to know, I was a gun-layer and sailed with him in 1941 and taught him a little about stripping a four-inch B.L. and firing one. We were together in November just before Pearl Harbour, near Greenland when a Wolf Pack sank the largest percentage of our convoy and made our ships, a small few left scatter and everyone was for himself. After that voyage, although I did a second trip across the Atlantic, I never saw him again. I have written to the Navy for permission to write to Mr Duck’s family, but I could not get an answer, so I wrote again to a Vice-Admiral and was informed they are trying to get me an address…… Lol Shortland 3 y ship, the “Birgitte” was sailing up North on the East Coast up to Methil to join a convoy bound M for Canada.
