Ranch Sorting National Championships “Where Traditions Meet the New West” Ranch Sorting started years before fences, when cattle grazed on the open range. Cowboys from surrounding ranches worked together to round up cattle for branding or for sale. After the cowboys circled the cattle in the herd, horsemen from the various ranches would slowly enter into the herd to sort out the desired cows and ease the selected cow to the outskirts of the herd. Today, this method has been developed into a competitive sport called Ranch Sorting. Two 60-foot corrals are connected with a 12-foot open gate. Eleven numbered cattle are placed in one corral and two contestants sort cattle in numerical order and move them through the gate and into the second corral. The team has 60 seconds to sort the cattle, and the team with the most cattle sorted in that time wins. It is the mission of the RSNC to lead the industry in the developing and improving the sport of ranch sorting through a fair rating system, while keeping it affordable to compete. Our goal is to preserve the heritage and integrity of the ranching lifestyle while providing a family-oriented, competi- tive riding experience at the grassroots level. April 29, achieved a net sales average of $7,000 per head, marking a historical record in the company’s 38- year history. Buyers traveled from 17 states amid heavy regional rainfall, to purchase 200 head for an 85-percent sales completion (less those withdrawn) and reach a lofty top 10 average of $24,100. The one-day sale was held in Shawnee’s Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center and began with demonstrations, followed by a multiple-session sale. Strong sales generated a top 50 average of $13,500, and led to 37 new additions to Triangle’s “Top $10,000 Club,” now numbering 118 head from two sales in 2017. Triangle Sales’ owner, Jim Ware established the “Top $10,000 Club” in 2015 to designate horses selling for more than $10,000. Helping to shape the Spring Sale’s impressive net average was a $9,200 average on 59 geldings sold under saddle, reflective of the increasing demand for quality, performance-based horses, particularly those ready to ride. The demand has prompted steady gains seen in recent sales. Triangle’s Winter Sale sold 81 horses for more than $10,000; the 2017 Spring Sale’s $7,000 average is up from a $5,750 average in 2016. Averages for the Spring Sale by session: Cutting Horse Session National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Money Earners, $13,300; Yearlings, 2 & 3-Year Old Prospects, $7,500; Broodmares, $9,800 Select Reining Session National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Money Earners, $14,000 Shawnee Session Ranch Geldings and Mares, $5,700; Ranch Prospects, $4,100 The high seller overall and high selling cutting horse was lot 94, GS The Iceman (Smart Little Lena x Cruel Jewel x Lenas Jewel Bars), which went for $50,000. Michelle Moore of Pawnee, OK, was the consigning agent for the 2008 sorrel gelding.
