Qadeer London and New York: Routledge, 2006 ISBN: 978-0-415-37566-5 Pages: 336, Price: £85 In post-colonial era, many non-western societies have set their own goals of development and they have been successful to an extent in achieving their objectives, therefore, according to Mohammad A. Qadeer the view that poor especially Muslim societies are socially stagnant and resistant to modernization is not justified. Pakistan is an important Muslim country with reference to its historical and geopolitical location. Despite of not having a high level of economic triumph Pakistan represents a model of culturally and socially dynamic country. Qadeer himself regards this book as a ‘contemporary social history’ of Pakistan that elaborates geography, history, religion, state, politics, economics, civil society and other institutions of Pakistani society in a historical and evolutionary perspective.1 Qadeer demonstrates the dynamicity of Pakistani culture through economic development and social change, and has given the demographic figures on urbanization, population growth and such related phenomena. The book specifically explains the topics like popular culture, ethnic groups and national identity, agrarian and industrial economy, family patterns, governance and civil society formation, and Islamic way of life. Even a new state emerged in the mid of 20th century, Pakistan’s history and culture can be traced thousand years back in the Indus Valley Civilization. This thesis argues that the primary mover of the migration were the edicts, or Farmans, of the Ismaili spiritual leader. They were instrumental in motivating Ismailis to go to East Africa. -

Clarence‐Smith, SOAS, University of London Available online at http://www.yale.edu/glc/indian‐ocean/clarence‐smith.pdf © Do not cite or circulate without the author’s permission For Bernard Lewis, ‘Islamic abolitionism’ is a contradiction in terms, for it was the West that imposed abolition on Islam, through colonial decrees or by exerting pressure on independent states.1 He stands in a long line of weighty scholarship, which stresses the uniquely Western origins of the ending slavery, and the unchallenged legality of slavery in Muslim eyes prior to the advent of modern secularism and socialism. However, there has always been a contrary approach, which recognizes that Islam developed positions hostile to the ‘peculiar institution’ from within its own traditions.2 This paper follows the latter line of thought, exploring Islamic views of slavery in the western Indian Ocean, broadly conceived as stretching from Egypt to India. Islamic abolition was particularly important in turning abolitionist laws into a lived social reality. Muslim rulers were rarely at the forefront of passing abolitionist legislation, 1 Bernard Lewis, Race and slavery in the Middle East, an historical enquiry (New York: Oxford University Press, 1990) pp. 78‐84. Clarence‐Smith 1 and, if they were, they often failed to enforce laws that were ‘for the Englishman to see.’ Legislation was merely the first step, for it proved remarkably difficult to suppress the slave trade, let alone slavery itself, in the western Indian Ocean.3 Only when the majority of Muslims, including slaves themselves, embraced the process of reform did social relations really change on the ground. -

In public buildings throughout the land, her painted image graces the walls, often at a spectacular level of magnification. The streets, too, are home to her effigy in the form of posters, statues, and plaques. In Karachi, a road, a housing colony, and a dental college are named for her, while, in Islamabad, a park, in Lahore, a medical school, and, in Rawalpindi, a women’s university. The list of her commemorations appears endless—even stretching, for those in the United Kingdom, to a waxwork at Madame Tussauds. In memorial as in life, she often appears at the side of her more famous brother, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Just as he is revered as Qaid-i-Azam, or “Great Leader,” for his role in founding Pakistan in 1947, so she is honored as Madar-i-Millat: “Mother of the Nation.” Together, they rest at the iconic Mazar-i-Qaid, or National Monument—a stunning example of 1960s modernism in marble not to be missed by any visitor—in the bustling, maritime city of their birth, Karachi. -

Christiansen ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate School of Northeastern University September, 2012 3 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the history of East Pakistan/Bangladesh’s student movements in the postcolonial period. The principal argument is that the major student mobilizations of Dhaka University are evidence of an active student engagement with shared symbols and rituals across time and that the campus space itself has served as the linchpin of this movement culture. The category of “student” developed into a distinct political class that was deeply tied to a concept of local place in the campus; however, the idea of “student” as a collective identity also provided a means of ideological engagement with a globally imagined community of “students.” Thus, this manuscript examines the case study of student mobilizations at Dhaka University in various geographic scales, demonstrating the levels of local, national and global as complementary and interdependent components of social movement culture. The project contributes to understandings of Pakistan and Bangladesh’s political and social history in the united and divided period, as well as provides a platform for analyzing the historical relationship between social movements and geography that is informative to a wide range of disciplines. -

Lahore made history and gave a lead which changed the face of the subcontinent. Today, seventeen years after the inception of Pakistan you are again faced with a critical situation and you have to take a momentous decision. The problem before you is to create conditions which would enable you to work for realisation of the ideals and for which Pakistan was brought into being . When you adopted the Lahore resolution you had before you, the vision of a state in which every citizen would be treated as a decent human being with rights and responsibilities, in which everyone would be assured of fundamental rights, equality of opportunity and basic necessities of life . Whatever the cause, that vision has not been realised . There is today a wide cleavage between the people who want free democratic institutions and between the cliques of rulers who want all powers in their own hands and who . are trying to set a façade of democratic institutions . They have arrogated to themselves all the patriotism and claim that they alone, and no-one else, understand what is good for the country and what is in the interest of the people. -

SLAVIN Abstract: The National Archives of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan presents a fascinating paradox for archivists interested in the work of their colleagues abroad. Faced with the separate problems of poverty, illiteracy, and martial law, the National Archives of Pakistan has established and maintained a model archival program for South Asia. The collections housed at the National Archives of Pakistan—a mix of manuscripts from the Moghul rulers to the administrative papers of the first years of government—reflect the multitude of paradoxes which Pakistan has come to represent. About the author: Timothy A. Slavin is the state archivist for the State of Rhode Island and Prov- idence Plantations. From 1987 to 1989 he served as assistant archivist for the Archives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. This article is based upon research conducted during a personal visit to Pakistan in January 1989. My name is Usama Bin Shafqat and I will be your chair as we engage in a throwback to the events that continue to define lives for more than a billion people today. I am from Islamabad, Pakistan and will be a sophomore this year—tentatively majoring in Operations Research and Financial Engineering. Model UN has always been my IR indulgence in an otherwise scientific education as I culminated my high school career by serving as the Secretary-General for the largest conference in Islamabad—the Millennial Model UN 2013. I’ve continued Model UN here at Princeton by helping out with both PMUNC and PICSIM last year—in Operations and Crisis, respectively. Outside of Model UN, I’m a major foodie and love cricket. This will be a historical crisis committee where we chart our own path through a subcontinent where the British are fast losing grip over their largest colony. We shall convene in the 1920s as political parties within India begin engaging with the masses and stand up more forcefully against the British Empire. Our emphasis will be on the interplay between the major parties in the discussions—the British, the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League.
