Kaytranada 99.9% Hip-hop and house music have had a turbulent relationship since their beginnings, though the genres aren’t really so different. In fact, their similarities have coaxed many artists to produce compounds of the two. It’s been commonplace to find hip-hop cuts on dance producers’ albums in recent times. Equally, the grainy funk loops, vinyl crackles and EQing of hip-hop now regularly feature on the 4/4 dancefloor beats craving its organic matter and grit. What has not yet really happened in any meaningful way though, is for a hip-hop producer to have tapped into house, blending the two worlds in a credible, original way. Montreal, Canada’s Kaytranada seems to be that artist, and accordingly the hype around him has been huge. What if J Dilla had made house too? That’s Kaytranada’s shtick and he wears it well. His debut album 99.9% lands on UK label XL Recordings —canny talent spotters who’ve recently returned to the dance beats with which they first earned their reputation. Loaded with the kind of guest rap slots you’d expect from the hippest 2016 Stateside hip-hop record, it features names like Anderson .Paak, Vic Mensa, Odd Future/The Internet’s Syd and erm, Craig David. 99% may have its share of rap tempo beats and concessions to trap, but what’s exciting here is how Kaytranada switches up the pace from track to track. “Track Uno” is a wicked 4/4 piece made up of glinting twilight boogie loops and electroid bass, which resembles something you’d expect from Leon Vynehall or Theo Parrish more than a guy associated with rap. “Bus Ride,” featuring drummer Karriem Riggins, is a contemplative, string- laden trip-hop piece, loaded with beats which suddenly catapult into double time drum & bass flourishes. “One Too Many,” with Little Brother’s Phonte, is a loose, synthy disco cut, with vocals that flit between silky R&B and raw rap flows, while “Breakdance Lesson No.1” is all ’80s funk guitar licks and arpeggiated synth details (almost a broken beat/disco fusion). “You’re the One,” though, is the perfect mix of funked-up house and modern R&B vibes—its played-in, unquantised synth bass and loose swing makes perfect sense with Syd’s honeyed vocals. Even Kaytranada’s straight up rap tracks are unconventional, such as the loping trap beat of “Drive Me Crazy.” Its cascading, ethereal synth loop in the backdrop sounds suspiciously like Origin Unknown’s hardcore/jungle classic “Valley of the Shadows”—something that smacks of deliberate intertextual reference, demonstrative of the producer’s dance culture knowledge and attachment. Even if it’s not, it bangs like a barn door. 99.9% is a brilliant, well-realized combination of styles, with more than its fair share of memorable and addictive songs. It’s also a genre-trouncing exercise that you feel, and hope, will have an influence upon other producers Stateside. Kaytranada is certainly a talent to watch. 99% is due to hit stores May 6. Pre-order it at the XL Recordings store. Kaytranada 99.9% It’s been a long time coming, but Kaytranada has finally announced his highly anticipated debut album, 99.9%. In celebration of this news, the Montréal producer has also shared a new song. “Bus Ride” is what the title implies: a meandering trip that’s smooth, but not its without surprises. The song features Karriem Riggins and Toronto vocalist River Tiber, and serves as our first taste of the upcoming album. Track list: 01 Track Uno 02 Bus Ride [ft. Kaytranada might share bills with the EDM elite, but his debut album is a much looser affair than that suggests, drawing on everything from pop and hip-hop to house and disco. What’s more, the talented producer brings a lot out of his impressive roster of guests. The previously released ‘Glowed Up’ is a potent highlight, with Anderson .Paak’s breezy vocal floating over a weighty but playful beat. ‘Got It Good’ is another, with a commanding Craig David performance, while ‘Together’ pits AlunaGeorge against Goldlink over Thundercat-style funk. ‘Weight Off’ veers into shimmering late night jazz, while ‘Track Uno’ crafts gorgeous synth pop out of seesaw keys and super funky bass. A generous, vibrant album that asserts a singular vision. 99.9 album download. KAYTRANADA's debut LP is a guest-packed club night of vintage house, hip-hop, and soul. The Montreal producer brings a rich old-school feel to all of these tracks, but it’s his vocalists that put them over the edge. AlunaGeorge drops a sizzling topline over a swervy beat on “TOGETHER,” Syd brings bedroom vibes to the bassline-driven house tune “YOU’RE THE ONE,” and Anderson .Paak is mysterious and laidback on the hazy soundscape “GLOWED UP.” And when Karriem Riggins and River Tiber assist on the boom-bap atmospheres of “BUS RIDE," they simply cement the deal..

  • Like Musical Theatre and Scripted Television, Jazz and Hip-Hop Are Uniquely, Undeniably North American Art Forms
Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique. On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before. The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth").

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

However, one thing led to another and it was almost thirty years before the opportunity to study at Liberty University presented itself. I would like to thank John Benham and Katherine Morehouse for making the Liberty program a welcoming place for someone so out of practice and out of touch with academia. I have found your sensitivity to students, your expertise in the field, and your encouragement in the spiritual dimensions of music to be life changing. The seeds of ethnomusicological passion were planted early in my college career. I am very grateful to Alan Dundes, my anthropology advisor, for encouraging me to pursue music inside of anthropology and folklore, and specifically for allowing me to get my feet wet by collecting and analyzing dozens of versions of the folk song, Frankie and Johnny. I also appreciate anthropology professor James Deetz who allowed me to explore what I believed were the parallels between American vernacular architecture and musical form. I am indebted to composer Olly Wilson for providing me new ways to understand popular music and identify and distinguish both European and African elements that are jointly present in American popular forms.

Videoclipuri: „Can’t leave the night”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pREWCA9FYg „Fish”, ft.
