282 • OBITUARYNOTICES OBITITARY NOTICES. MR. MON.TEITH OGILVIE. As one by one the names of deceased Members are erased from our list, we cannot but feel keenly' when men of exceptional talent are removed from the Institute by death. Mr. Monteith Ogilvie, whose accomplishinents were of the most varied kind, was Hon. Surgeon to the Oxford Eye Hospital. As a horticulturist he was a renowned orchid grower, and his collection at Oxford was one of the finest in England. In 1910 he was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Oxford Horticultural Society, and in 1912 he won the 100 Guinea Cup at the International Exhibition. To .enumerate all the prizes and first class certificates bestowed upon him between the years 1905 and 1916 would take up more space than is available. But it is perhaps by Mr. Ogilvie's ornithological work that he has been most widely known. He was President of the Ornithological Section of the Ashmolean Natural History Society at Oxford until 1916, and the Society was indebted to him for a series of lectures on birds generally illustrated by diagrams and skins. The following tribute is from an Oxford paper : " It can truly be said that by his premature death British ornithology has been robbed of one of its most earnest and conscientious workers." THE REV. WILLIAM SYMONDS,M.A. The Rev. William Symonds, who was a Member of the Council of the Suffolk Institute of Archmology and Natural History, and much respected by all who knew flim , passed away on Monday, July 1st, 1918, at 10, Angel Hill, Bury St. Edmunds. He was a son of the late Sir Thomas Symonds, c.c.s. and " took the Bachelor of Arts degree when at Magdalen College, Oxford, - in 1881., and became M.A. in 1884. He was ordained deacon in 1882, and admitted to the priesthood in 1883. He was curate of St. jaines's, Accring- ton, from 1882 to 1884 •,vicar of Clandown; Somersetshire, from 1884 to 1886 ; curate of St. Andrew's, Well Street, from 1887 to 1888 ; vicar of Frocester, Gloucestershire, from 1888 to 1900 ; vicar of. Sherstone with Pinkney rectory, from 1900 to 1905 ; missioner of St. Andrew, Sarum, from 1905 to 1909 ; curate of Horsley (in charge of Chavenage, Gloucestershire) from 1909 to 1910 ; and assistant missioner South of St. Andrew, Sarum, from 1910 to 1913, in which year he became curate of St. James's, Bury St. Edmund's, and in the following year the Bishop of Suffolk appointed him to" be one of his five honorary chaplains."     for Issue Feb 2019 Connecting Communities ince becoming leader of Suffolk County Council, I have continued to keep broadband at the top of my agenda. I am pleased to tell you that the Better Broadband for Suffolk program has Sreached a new milestone, 93% of homes and businesses across Suffolk can now upgrade to a Superfast Broadband service. This is fantastic news and means an overwhelming majority of residents, businesses and organisations can now enjoy the benefits of faster and more reliable internet speeds. But as a resident and a councillor of a rural ward where some premises still do not enjoy these benefits, I know we have further to go. We already have a contract in place for Openreach to extend fibre broadband coverage to 98% of all Suffolk premises by 2020. But even beyond this, we are committed to reaching 100% Superfast Broadband coverage in Suffolk as quickly as possible. So, if you haven’t already done so, check if Superfast Broadband is available where you live by following the simple steps below, but don’t forget, even if broadband is available, you will need to upgrade your connection to enjoy the benefits of the higher speeds. Purpose of Report 1.1 In accordance with the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013, every council in England and Wales must undertake and complete a review of all of the polling districts and polling places in its area. 1.2 Guidance produced by the Electoral Commission sets out the process for a review, and this has been followed. 1.3 The appendix to this report provides a list of the recommended polling districts, polling places and polling stations, showing the changes which have been made since the last review. 2.     Naughton Conservation Area Appraisal

    Naughton conservation area appraisal Introduction The conservation area in Naughton was originally designated by Babergh District Council in 1981. The Council has a duty to review its conservation area designations from time to time, and this appraisal examines Naughton under a number of different headings as set out in English Heritage’s new ‘Guidance on Conservation Area Appraisals’ (2006). As such it is a straightforward appraisal of Naughton’s built environment in conservation terms. As a document it is neither prescriptive nor overly descriptive, but more a demonstration of ‘quality of place’, sufficient for the briefing of the Planning Officer when assessing proposed works in the area. The photographs and maps are thus intended to contribute as much as the text itself. As the English Heritage guidelines point out, the appraisal is to be read as a general overview, rather than as a comprehensive listing, and the omission of any particular building, feature or space does not imply that it is of no interest in conservation terms. Topographical Framework The village of Naughton is situated in south central Suffolk, about five miles north of the market town of Hadleigh and eight miles east of Lavenham. The settlement sits about two miles north-east of the River Brett, which flows south from here down through Hadleigh and onwards to join the Stour at Higham. Whilst the river valley has cut down through the overlying boulder clay of ‘High Suffolk’ to reveal locally gravels, crags and pockets of older London Clay, Naughton remains firmly on the edge of that clay plateau.

    IN MEMORIAM. 365 IN MEMORIAM. THE LATEEARLOF IVEAGH,K.P. On the 7th October, 1927,Lord Iveagh passed to his rest, after a short illness. He had been a member of the SuffolkInstitute of Archxologyfor over twenty years. His generousand wisemunifi- cencein England and Ireland in the cause of education, the better housingof the poor and medicalresearchwill be long remembered. His bequest to the nation ofhis houseat Ken Woodand his magnifi- cent collection of pictures is also well known. His large estate in Suffolk,comprisingthe parishes of Elveden, Eriswell and Icklingham is considereda model one from an agri- cultural and sporting point of view. The hall at Elveden was partly rebuilt and restored by him in the early part of this century, and the celebratedMarbleHall, the details of which weremodelled from examples of ancient Indian art, was completed in 1903. In 1901under the guidance of the Societyfor the Protection of Ancient Buildings,Lord Iveagh re-roofedand restored the church of All Saint's, Icklingham,whichhas many treasures of antiquarian interest. He also restored and re-roofedthe old church of St. Andrew at Elveden and built on a nave, chancel and organ chamber ; using the old church as the South Aisle and a private chapel ; this was consecratedin October, 1906,by'BishopChaseof Ely and dedicated to St. Andrew and St. Patrick ; W. D. Caroe, F.S.A.,F.R.I.A.,was the architect. Later the tall campanilewith peal of ten bells, and the cloisterswere added in memory of Lady Iveagh. The War Memorialto the men of Elveden, Eriswelland Ickling- ham standing at the junction of the three parishes; was erected largely through his generosity; it is a Corinthian column about 120-ft.high on a tall base, surmounted by an urn ; it is visiblefor many miles.
