On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism. -

The referral 1. Under section 88H (2) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, (the Act), an objection has been referred to the Adjudicator by the Diocese of Carlisle, (the Diocese) the objector, about the admission arrangements (the arrangements) for Patterdale Church of England Primary School (the School), a voluntary aided primary school for pupils age 4-11 years for September 2013. The objection is to the oversubscription criteria which do not give preference to children of the faith. Jurisdiction 2. These arrangements were determined under section 88C of the Act by the School’s governing body, which is the admission authority for the School. The objector submitted their objection to these determined arrangements on 21 June 2012. I am satisfied the objection has been properly referred to me in accordance with section 88H of the Act and it is within my jurisdiction. Procedure 3. In considering this matter I have had regard to all relevant legislation and the School Admissions Code (the Code). ‘Daylight upon magic’: Stained Glass and the Victorian Monarchy Michael Ledger-Lomas If it help, through the senses, to bring home to the heart one more true idea of the glory and the tenderness of God, to stir up one deeper feeling of love, and thankfulness for an example so noble, to mould one life to more earnest walking after such a pattern of self-devotion, or to cast one gleam of brightness and hope over sorrow, by its witness to a continuous life in Christ, in and beyond the grave, their end will have been attained.1 Thus Canon Charles Leslie Courtenay (1816–1894) ended his account of the memorial window to the Prince Consort which the chapter of St George’s Chapel, Windsor had commissioned from George Gilbert Scott and Clayton and Bell. Erected in time for the wedding of Albert’s son the Prince of Wales in 1863, the window attempted to ‘combine the two ele- ments, the purely memorial and the purely religious […] giving to the strictly memorial part, a religious, whilst fully preserving in the strictly religious part, a memorial character’. For Courtenay, a former chaplain- in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, the window asserted the significance of the ‘domestic chapel of the Sovereign’s residence’ in the cult of the Prince Consort, even if Albert’s body had only briefly rested there before being moved to the private mausoleum Victoria was building at Frogmore. This window not only staked a claim but preached a sermon. It proclaimed the ‘Incarnation of the Son of God’, which is the ‘source of all human holiness, the security of the continuousness of life and love in Him, the assurance of the Communion of Saints’. -

ABSTRACT The thesis argues that the most distinctive feature of the Labour Church was Theological Socialism. For its founder, John Trevor, Theological Socialism was the literal Religion of Socialism, a post-Christian prophecy announcing the dawn of a new utopian era explained in terms of the Kingdom of God on earth; for members of the Labour Church, who are referred to throughout the thesis as Theological Socialists, Theological Socialism was an inclusive message about God working through the Labour movement. Abstract This thesis demonstrates that the First World War did not have a major long-term impact on the evangelical free churches of Birmingham. Whilst many members were killed in the conflict, and local church auxiliaries were disrupted, once the participants – civil and military – returned, the work and mission of the churches mostly continued as they had before the conflict, the exception being the Adult School movement, which had been in decline prior to the conflict. It reveals impacts on local church life, including new opportunities for women amongst the Baptist and Congregational churches where they began to serve as deacons. The advent of conscription forced church members to personally face the issue as to whether as Christians they could in conscience bear arms. The conflict also speeded ecumenical co-operation nationally, in areas such as recognition of chaplains, and locally, in organising local prayer meetings and commemorations. -

Context and Background The Diocese of Carlisle The Diocese of Carlisle represents the Church of England across almost the whole of the county of Cumbria. The Diocese was created nearly 900 years ago. It is made up of three "archdeaconry" units: Carlisle; Westmorland and Furness; and West Cumberland, with a total of 11 Deaneries. Around 150 stipendiary and self-supporting clergy minister within the Diocese, along with over 100 licensed Readers and a growing number of commissioned Local Lay Ministers. The Diocese is currently working with ecumenical partners to implement the shared Vision and Strategy “God for All”, see http://www.godforall.org.uk/ Within the Diocese there are 334 Churches in 275 parishes, serving a population of just under 500,000 people. The Diocese covers an area of over 2,500 square miles, including the Eden Valley and the beautiful Lake District national park which contains England’s highest mountain -• Scafell Pike -• and deepest lake -• Wastwater. Outside the urban centres at Carlisle and along the West Coast the Diocese is largely rural with a smattering of historic market towns such as Kendal, Penrith, Cockermouth and Appleby. The Carlisle Diocesan Board of Finance (CDBF), which is a limited, charitable company, and provides the corporate, financial and administrative backbone of the Diocese, is based at Church House in Penrith. The CDBF has an annual turnover of around £8m, owns and manages around 150 diverse properties, has a range of investment assets worth over £20m including significant stakes in two Lake District hydro-•electric plans, and, along with Rydal Hall Ltd, employs approximately 60 staff. -

The Bishop of Coventry’s Presidential Address to the Diocesan Synod, June 2019 Dear Members of Synod, I am delighted to open my address with a greeting from our dear Friend, Bishop Paul, Bishop of Kapsabet in the Anglican Diocese of Kenya, our Companion Link Diocese. [For the text of Bishop Paul’s letter, please scroll to the bottom of this document] Bishop Paul speaks of the ‘link and companionship between the diocese of Kapsabet and the diocese of Coventry’ as ‘a gift from God for the extension of His Kingdom’. He ends with a verse from the final chapter of Job, which tells how, after Job had prayed for his friends, ‘the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before’ (Job 42.10). Links, companionship, friendship between Christians is a very special gift that is all too easy to take for granted. Even more so between Christians in different countries. The Church of God knows no boundaries across time and space. We are an international community bound together as people of different races, cultures and histories by the one Spirit of the one Christ whom we share as Lord and whose body we form, and through whom we have access to the Father and share in the very life of God. In a country where divisions between people appear to be especially stark and which, whatever happens on 31st October, is trying to discover its place in the world; and in a world where tensions are high between nations and where wars of words and trade threaten us with the prospect of wars with bombs and bullets, the universality – the global – reality of the Church is, indeed, ‘a gift from God for the extension of His Kingdom’. -
Manchester and Salford Politics and the Early Development of the Independent Labour Party
JEFFREY HILL MANCHESTER AND SALFORD POLITICS AND THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDEPENDENT LABOUR PARTY The grass-roots activities of the Independent Labour Party have been the subject of increased scrutiny from historians over the past few years, especially in the pages of this journal.1 Consequently we can now be a little surer about the contribution of the party to the development of an in- dependent labour movement in Britain at the end of the nineteenth cen- tury, though with every fresh case-study a different local strategy seems to come to light. The one outstanding profile in this field is the closely observed account of the ILP in Bradford by J. Reynolds and K. Laybourn, who identify several key features in the party's growth in that city, notably the reformist nature of ILP socialism and the close associations with local trade unionism. "From the outset", they tell us, "Bradford trade unionism and the Bradford ILP were seen as two aspects of a single homogeneous labour movement aimed at the emancipation of the working class from poverty and exploitation."2 But how far this pattern of development was repeated elsewhere is a different matter. David Rubinstein's account of the ILP's intervention in the Barnsley bye-election of 1897, for example, reveals that the ILP in this area did not take up a Bradford-style policy of labour alliance until the late 1890's, and suggests that this was the case for the ILP as a whole.3 Yet studies of the party's activities on the other side of the Pennines indicate a different story still. -

Travels in America: Aelred Carlyle, His American “Allies,” and Anglican Benedictine Monasticism Rene Kollar Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania N FEBRUARY 1913, Abbot Aelred Carlyle and a majority of the Benedictine monks of Caldey Island, South Wales, renounced the Anglican Church and converted to I Roman Catholicism.1 For years, the Caldey Island monastery had been a show piece of Anglo-Catholicism and a testimony to the catholic heritage of the Anglican Church, but when Charles Gore, the Bishop of Oxford, tried to regularize their status within Anglicanism by forcing Carlyle and the monks to agree to a series of demands which would radically alter their High Church liturgy and devotions, the monks voted to join the Church of Rome. The demands of the Great War, however, strained the fragile finances of the island monastery, and during the spring of 1918, Abbot Carlyle traveled to America to solicit funds for his monastery. “And it was indeed sheer necessity that took me away from the quiet shores of Caldey,” he told the readers of Pax, the community’s magazine, but “Caldey has suffered grievously through the war.”2 Abbot Carlyle saw a possible solution to his problems. “In our need we turned to our Catholic Allies in the United States, and my duty seemed obvious that I should accept the invitation I had received to go to New York to plead in person the cause of Caldey there.” Carlyle had not forgotten lessons from the past. During his years as an Anglican monk, the American connection proved to be an important asset in the realization of his monastic dreams. -

Because it is sacred football. How grateful I am that I know nothing and care less about it, any more than motoring! I shall wait, I expect patiently, for both activities to fall apart from the inside, and perhaps, become rational. But oh, how I bleed for those poor dead young people. Tuesday April 18 1989 Now Liverpool Council are offering complete financial support for all the families of the dead, funeral expenses, everything. I wonder if the same would have been if ninety-five people had been suffocated on the stairs after a semi-gala at Liverpool Playhouse. Odd peoples’ love of crowds. I think I must have as little of the herd instinct as anyone. Last night I thought I might go to see A. Hopkins in M. Buller fly which is previewing. When I got there, the foyer was so full at 7.30 for 8.0, that I didn’t even enquire whether there was a ticket, - I turned away and came back home. Another aspect of the whole thing, is the lower middle class male being very very reluctantly dragged into reality. I hope he’s not too upset about it to work. Later. It seemed like next day! Out at 2.15 to buy some summer pyjamas, 3 prs. £41 M and S, Oxford St. Then to buy coffee beans, Gourmet Noir. -
