As a journalist, he made sigificant contributions to his publications and to the music world as a whole. It’s rare to see people who exhibit such commitment to their craft. We will miss them both.     Pat Donohue in Concert Sunday, May 26th, 7 p.m. The Surge Community Church 1988 Kirby Road McLean, VA 22101 Sponsored by the Songwriters’ Association of Washington Grammy-winning fingerstyle guitarist Pat Donohue will appear on Sunday, May 26th, at The Surge Community Church in McLean, Virginia. He will be in the area for two performances at the Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts. This is your chance to see him perform solo, in an intimate setting. Pat has earned national recognition for his mastery of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, which he exhibits weekly as the guitarist for the Guys All Star Shoe Band on Garrison Keillor’s radio program “A Prairie Home Companion.” Chet Atkins called him one of the greatest finger pickers in the world today. Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.” Although he considers himself foremost a folk guitarist, Pat manages to blend jazz and blues with folk, and the mix is seamless. Over the years he has captivated audiences with his unique original compositions, dazzling instrumentals, and humorous song parodies, including Sushi-Yucky and Would You Like to Play the Guitar? Honors include a Grammy award for his participation in the Best Pop Instrumental of 2005, a collection of Henry Mancini guitar arrangements called Pink Guitar; several Minnesota Music Awards; and the prestigious title of 1983 National Finger Picking Guitar Champion. His original tunes have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss, and Kenny Rogers. Jefferson's performances were distinctive as a result of his high-pitched voice and the originality on his guitar playing. Although his recordings sold well, he was not so influential on some younger blues singers of his generation, who could not imitate him as easily as they could other commercially successful artists. Later blues and rock and roll musicians, however, did attempt to imitate both his songs and his musical style. Biography Early life Jefferson was born blind, near Coutchman in Freestone County, near present-day Wortham, Texas. He was one of eight children born to sharecroppers Alex and Clarissa Jefferson. Disputes regarding his exact birth date derive from contradictory census records and draft registration records. By 1900, the family was farming southeast of Streetman, Texas, and Lemon Jefferson's birth date is indicated as September 1893 in the 1900 census. The 1910 census, taken in May before his birthday, further confirms his year of birth as 1893, and indicated the family was farming northwest of Wortham, near Lemon Jefferson's birthplace.

GUY appears ten years after his Grammy Award ​ winning album TOWNES, his tribute to his other songwriting mentor, Townes Van Zandt. ​ ​ Produced by Earle and recorded by his longtime production partner Ray Kennedy, GUY features ​ his latest, and possibly best, incarnation of his backing band The Dukes including Kelley Looney on bass, Chris Masterson on guitar, Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle & mandolin, Ricky Ray Jackson on pedal steel guitar, and Brad Pemberton on drums & percussion. Today, The New Yorker has premiered GUY in its entirety. Speaking to the magazine, Earle ​ ​ ​ states, “I knew when Guy died that I’d have to make a record, because I don’t want to run into that motherfucker on the other side having made Townes’s record and not made his. I don’t even know whether I believe in that, you know, but I am not taking any chances.” The New ​ Yorker calls GUY a “winsome tribute,” stating “Earle turned sixty-four this year, and, though his ​ vocals have always been suffused with a bit of psychic fatigue, it feels like he’s now the exact right age to give voice to Clark’s particular heartache.

  • Vanguard Label Discography Was Compiled Using Our Record Collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1953 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963, and Various Other Sources
    Discography Of The Vanguard Label Vanguard Records was established in New York City in 1947. It was owned by Maynard and Seymour Solomon. The label released classical, folk, international, jazz, pop, spoken word, rhythm and blues and blues. Vanguard had a subsidiary called Bach Guild that released classical music. The Solomon brothers started the company with a loan of $10,000 from their family and rented a small office on 80 East 11th Street. The label was started just as the 33 1/3 RPM LP was just gaining popularity and Vanguard concentrated on LP’s. Vanguard commissioned recordings of five Bach Cantatas and those were the first releases on the label. As the long play market expanded Vanguard moved into other fields of music besides classical. The famed producer John Hammond (Discoverer of Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin) came in to supervise a jazz series called Jazz Showcase. The Solomon brothers’ politics was left leaning and many of the artists on Vanguard were black-listed by the House Un-American Activities Committive. Vanguard ignored the black-list of performers and had success with Cisco Houston, Paul Robeson and the Weavers. The Weavers were so successful that Vanguard moved more and more into the popular field. Folk music became the main focus of the label and the home of Joan Baez, Ian and Sylvia, Rooftop Singers, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and many others. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, a folk festival was held each year in Newport Rhode Island and Vanguard recorded and issued albums from the those events.
