Checklist of the Fishes from Jeju Island,Korea Byung-Jik KIM,Ik-Soo KIM,Kazuhiro NAKAYA,Mamoru YABE, Youn CHOIand Hisashi IMAMURA (Received 6 October 2008,Accepted 27 January 2009) Abstract Jeju Island, being located off southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula,is the largest volcanic island in Korea. The marine environment around Jeju Island is highly complicated, and provides affluent biodiversity of fishes.A new list of the fishes of Jeju Island, including a total of 665 species,is given on the bases of both 348 voucher specimens and the related references to the ichthyofauna of Jeju Island. Key words:Jeju Island,Korea,Fishes,Species list,665 species have presented a fish list including 501 species, although Introduction some species on their list were based on underwater Jeju Island, being located off southwestern coast of the photographs.Remarkable recent increase of the species Korean Peninsula,is the largest volcanic island of recorded in the waters of Jeju Island may be resulted not Korea, and is regarded as a depository of marine and only by increase of comprehensive collecting efforts, but terrestrial living organisms owing to its affluent biodiver- also by changes of marine environments of the island sity.Although the coastal line of the island is relatively including gradual rise in water temperature. monotonous and the depths of its surrounding waters In the present paper,we provide a new list of the are shallow, less than 150 m,the littoral regions of Jeju fishes(including freshwater fishes)of Jeju Island, with a Island show diverse marine e nviron ments comprising total of 665 species, based on both 350 voucher speci- seaweeds, reefs which are well developed in shallow mens and the references related to the ichthyofauna of waters, sandy beaches, and soft corals.Especially, the Jeju Island. marine environment of Jeju Island is highly compli- cated, because it is affected not only by several different Materials and Methods ocean currents and water masses, such as Tsushima Current divided from the Kurosio Warm Current, The species list was made on the basis of both voucher Yellow Sea Cold Water,South Sea Coastal Water, and specimens and reliable references related to the ichth- China Coastal Water, but also by freshwater from yofauna of Jeju Island,Korea. The systematic arrange- springs spouting out near the coastal line and rainwater ments of the families follow those of Nelson(2006). in rainy season(Choi et al.,1992).It has been known Scientific names are generally those of Kim et al.(2005) that the coastal waters of Jeju Island play important with some modifications by recent taxonomic works. roles as spawning, feeding, and nursery grounds for Species in each family are arranged in an alphabetical variety of marine fishes. order of species names.Standard Korean names for Regarding the ichthyofauna of Jeju Island and its most species are the romanized names of those in Kim et adjacent waters,Uchida and Yabe(1939)firstly reported al.(2005)following the Hangul Romanization Notation 162 species, and Kim and Lee(1994)have reported 418 for the Korean alphabet restoration, and are given in species including freshwater fishes on the basis of speci- brackets after the scientific name.Standard Japanese mens and literatures.Yoo et al.(1995),subsequently, names are also given, following Korean names.About National Institute of Biological Resources,Environmental Research Complex,Gyeongseo-dong,Seo-gu,Incheon 404-170,Korea Faculty of Biological Sciences,College of Natural Science,Chonbuk National University,1ga 664-14,Duckjin-dong,Duckjin- gu,Chonju,Chonbuk,561-756,Korea Faculty of the Fisheries Sciences,Hokkaido University,3-1-1,Minato-cho,Hakodate,Hokkaido 041-8611,Japan (北海道大学大学院水産科学研究院海洋生物学分野) Faculty of Marine Life Science,Kunsan National University,San 68,Miryoung-dong,Gunsan-si,Gunsan 573-701,Korea Fisheries Science Center,The Hokkaido University Museum,3-1-1 Minato-cho,Hakodate,Hokkaido 041-8611,Japan (北海道大学総合博物館) ――7 Bull.Fish.Sci.Hokkaido Univ.59(1),2009. half of the species included in this list are based on the Family Alopiidae voucher specimens, but for the species without voucher Alopias pelagicus Nakamura,1935 specimens, only the reference of the first Korean report [Hwan-do-sang-eo;Nitari] for the species and scientific name used in it are given.
